There will come a day when I think racism on reddit is not a big deal.

But it is not this day.

[–]Quouarthe Weather History Slayer 3

Was it the images that were plastered across the front page last night?

Yep!!

[–]ankhx100stop stalin for time. hue hue hue

I'm afraid to ask, but what images? ._.

[–]Quouarthe Weather History Slayer 1

/r/punchablefaces was dominating the front page with a picture of a woman who I think interrupted a Bernie Sanders rally by talking about racism. The posts were...distasteful.

I must be said, it would have been a small but highly active group who caused the pic to dominate /r/all like that.

One balks at trying to typify the Reddit 'hivemind'. We love Bernie Sanders but we hate black people.

[–]de_la_seoul_Rommel, you a busta.

It's completely bizarre when I see people who unironically complain about SJWs and political correctness extol Sanders in the same breath, seeing as Sanders was an OG participant in the civil rights movement.

But he's male so he knows the exact, appropriate amount to talk about things.

[–]KaliYugazTenno Heika Banzai 1

I don't think it's just Reddit. It's a reflection of society.

Nobody want's to admit it, because it's verboten to criticize the Glorious Will of the People nowadays, but most of society is naturally sullen, reactionary, and self-serving. Democracy is an ugly system that enshrines the popular prejudices of "society" into law and then renders progressive change near impossible due to sheer social inertia and problems of collective action. Liberal democracy, especially without an educated populace, is perfectly designed to perpetuate systemic injustice.

That's why we have relatively undemocratic institutions like the Supreme Court to force popular compliance with the opinions of legal experts. Not a single progressive victory would have been possible without them laying down the law and telling "society" to get fucked.

I have to have the break pads replaced, as well as a ball joint. It's gonna set me back a good $500 or so. Hooray for cars that are old enough to vote!

goes in to get new brake pads. leaves with new axel, rotors, pads, bearings, wheels, and a suggestion to take a look at the front wheel system soon. grumble grumble.

There may be no more important person to befriend than someone who has easy access to the tools needed to perform car maintenance.

Until a couple years ago, I'd never done anything more complex than changing brake pads. But a couple months ago, it was both ball joints, both lower control arms, tie rod ends, and a couple of other things all done for nothing more than the cost of the parts. Well, and the time to do it, but that's another story.

My performing maintenance on my car would truly be a public safety concern.

I had a good weekend. On Saturday, I went to visit my sister with my mother. On the one hand, I felt completely out of place, as I got the impression that it was meant to be a mother-daughter visit that I happened to tag along on because I wanted to see my sister, but at the same time, no one seemed to mind. I had some sister-time, but the fact that I was there to comfort her after a miscarriage meant that I really had no clue what I was doing. I just hung out, read my nieces some books, and then walked around the farm with her. I suspect that was really what she wanted - just someone to come and say they cared too.

On Sunday, I went hiking with some friends, then played board games, and then went to a food truck rodeo where I had a very nice Thai taco. I don't know that I'm a fan of food truck rodeos - the price gouging is astounding - but I liked my taco, so that made up for it. The movie afterwards - watching Monty Python and the Holy Grail in a park on a big projector screen - was lovely as well.

I've now said good-bye to my friends, though. I'm ready to move. All that's left is to just convince the apartment agency in Austin that I'm serious, and that my husband's job is real. Hopefully, I'm moving this week. Hopefully.

You're right, just being there, and being semi-normal was really nice for your sister. Not to dictate her feelings or anything, but I understand and you helped.

I've been around a lot of people and in a lot of different atmospheres, and I've never seen such widespread and annoying proselytizing as the pro-Bernie Sanders crowd.

[–]Quouarthe Weather History Slayer 2

My dad got a Bernie Sanders bumper sticker and has been feeling very pleased with himself. I'm not sure what to say to him, so I've just been smiling and nodding every time he brings it up. I think he's disappointed in me.

[–]The740Feminists hired Christians to put lead in the Roman water supply 2

Every time I see it brought up like voting for Sanders would create some type of utopia, my inner Homer Simpson kicks in.

More specifically, the "Marge, you're my wife and I love you very much. But you're living in a world of make-believe, with flowers and bells and leprechauns, and magic frogs with funny little hats."

[–]Quouarthe Weather History Slayer 1

I don't think he thinks it will create a utopia, but he is planning on voting for an idealistic candidate that has a goal that he agrees with. I don't necessarily see anything wrong with being idealistic. I just don't like how there's this certainty that Sanders will win or that he even has a chance.

[–]The740Feminists hired Christians to put lead in the Roman water supply 2

I don't think he thinks it will create a utopia

From recent experience, that cements him firmly in the 1%.

I actually watched an interview with Sanders, and he seemed like a really convicted, reasonable man with reasonable views.

Too bad so little of his fanbase has any actual understanding of politics

I wait around hoping that one day a non-flaired user will ask me about the shaft tomb culture on /r/AskHistorians, but that day may be a long time coming. I had this insightful exchange with a user on /r/ArtefactPorn that made me realize that I can't just sit around and wait.

tell me an interesting fact about the shaft tomb culture

Despite being contemporaneous with Teotihuacan and having a corridor which would aid in travel and trade to Central Mexico, there is very little to no contact between the shaft tomb culture and Teotihuacan. A few Thin Orange sherds have been found from time to time, but that's about it. Talud tablero architecture does not make an appearance in the region until after the fall of Teotihuacan. We're unsure why there was no regular contact, but my hypothesis is that neither culture had anything the other culture wanted.

West Mexico also seems to have lacked any influence from the Olmec instead being influenced by the coastal Capacha culture, a contemporaneous culture to the Olmec.

Thin Orange sherds

Are these just sherds that are not thick and have a yellow-red color, or something else?

It's a ceramic type from Teotihuacan which is used as a diagnostic when looking at other sites. It is indeed rather thin and orange colored.

I spent all weekend painting and cleaning out the basement. I learned that my great grandfather built my great grandmother an entire set of bedroom furniture, plus chest for her birthday when they were dating in high school. He bought her a cow and a diamond necklace for their first anniversary. I also earned he basically owned my hometown, but lost it all gambling. He was an interesting man.

Ahhhh, had a great week. My sister and brother in law came out for a visit, so I took the week off work and they/my other sister/my parents had a lovely time. We went camping at Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes in Michigan, which is always beautiful (even if it did just come through an almost-tornado...), went kayaking and tubing, poked around Traverse City for awhile, stuffed ourselves on samples from Cherry Republic... good times.

It didn't even rain until we were leaving, either!

Finally moved down to Georgia for my masters program (don't worry, it's not a history degree, my liver is safe.) I'm just afraid because I have a big red Sherman beard.

Anyways, as an ignant Californian who has visited Georgia and the South 4-5 times, what should I know y'all?

Don't call Sherman a hero or say he "civilised the South." People don't like that sort of thing.

[–]TiakoTevinter apologist, shill for Big Lyrium 0

As the one person who is actually from Georgia here:

You'll fit right in with the big red beard. It's hot as hell but energy prices are cheap. In fact, everything is cheap. Smoking is more common than you are used to and it is illegal to carry alcohol outside.

Honestly, there is nothing to worry about here. Despite fifty years of negative media stereotypes people are pretty friendly here. Nobody will say you have a party mouth and if a cop pulls you over he won't ask what you are doing around these here parts, boy. There are Confederate monuments around but literally nobody cares if you complain about them. Cook county is desperately poor but they have actually done a lot to address racial tensions in the police force over the past couple decades.

Honestly, your biggest culture shock will be football culture.

Are you me? My masters is an online program, but I came here because of mostly free rent. Georgia is... interesting.

REQUIRED TEXTBOOK: ISBN: 9780820345406 -- Becoming Confederates: Paths to a New National Loyalty (Mercer University Lamar Memorial Lectures)

REQUIRED TEXTBOOK: ISBN: 9780807120170 -- Brokenburn: The Journal of Kate Stone, 1861-1868 (Library of Southern Civilization)

REQUIRED TEXTBOOK: ISBN: 9780743299626 -- Lincoln's Greatest Speech: The Second Inaugural (Simon & Schuster Lincoln Library)

REQUIRED TEXTBOOK: ISBN: 9780809087433 -- The Soldier's Pen: Firsthand Impressions of the Civil War

Anyone know anything? Thanks!

Apostles of Disunion rules and I wish more people would read it. It's almost nothing but the exact words that pro-secession lobbyists said to state legislatures. If that book won't put to bed any myths that secession wasn't about slavery, nothing will.

Yep this weekend was fun but it was too busy. I moved furniture and drove 20 hours total.
