What I find funny in the whole "reddit isn't liberal!!!!" meme is that:

-the sub by default that's about politics, /r/politics is insanely liberal

-the sub that's by default about crazy shit that redditors say, /r/ShitRedditSays, is insanely liberal

-the sub that's about circlejerks being broke, /r/circlebroke, is insanely liberal

-the sub that's about making fun of drama on reddit, /r/SubredditDrama, is slowly becoming very liberal

I bring this up only because of the link in the OP: how could someone disagree? Must be brigading by some evil reactionary sub. The hilarious thing is that in the real world, I'm slightly liberal. Enough that my conservative friends consider me a "LIBRUL" (said in jest, no one is dumb enough to say that really), and my liberal friends consider my a suspicious Blue Dog. But on reddit? I'm a racist conservative, intent on bringing back Jim Crow.

It's all so...interesting.

Everybody looks right-wing when you're on the left fringe. I know it's hard to realize when you're in a bubble, but how do they rationalize elections and public opinion polls? We live in a country where:

-Half of Americans vote for Republicans

-Half are pro-life

-Only 45% support single-payer healthcare

40% do not believe global warming is caused by human activites

-40% believe God created humans 6,000 year ago and evolution doesn't exist

And they believe reddit is right-wing? Reddit, who overwhelmingly supports Bernie Sanders, the left-wing alternative to Hillary who only polls at 20% support among Democrats. That reddit is conservative? Why is the left always so insistent on eating itself?

Oh you missed the episode where they invented "brogressive" ...a way to paint people who are far-left of center as somehow still being part of a reactionary patriarchy. I wish I was making that up. Brogressives are apparently the new Girondins.

Remember that the French revolution went through a few iterations of executing folks on the basis of idealogical purity before someone got the bright idea to put Napoleon in charge. I have no idea why the term 'SJW' is bandied about when Jacobin is far more succinct and accurate.

Naw man, "brogressive" is a totally academic, meaningful term. /s

Are you referring to the Gallup poll where the only choices are Evolution (God did/did not assist) and YEC? The poll that does not have an option for non-YEC creationism and does not have a neutral/do not know answer?

I take a lot of issue with the fact that they assume Creationism=Young Earth Creationism. There's a reason it's called "Young Earth" Creationism and not just "Creationism." It's a subtle, but important, difference.

Yeah that's the one I'm referring to. But right on the page they list "Humans evolved, with God guiding" as an option. I thought that's what non-YEC creationism was?

I think the main stream evangelical view is that the days in genesis weren't literal days and covered millions of years, so the possible answers would leave out a decent chunk.

I'm referring to people who either don't know at all or people who believe in a non-specific "Creationism."

Put it this way: there's a big difference in not believing that humans evolved from so-called "lesser beings" and spouting antiscience nonsense like the dinosaurs never existed and that fossils are just "tests of faith" placed by God. Also, if I'm someone who doesn't really care about following modern science (believe it or not, evolution doesn't really directly impact most people's lives), I can't say "I don't know."

I'm sorry, I'm trying to understand your view but it really seems like they're accounting between the different creationisms you are talking about. And I believe don't know/not sure was a response they counted - notice how the totals don't add up to 100%.

There's a few ways I think a Christian person could answer:

  • Evolutionary Creationism: Evolution is scientific fact, but it is a part of God's process of creation.
  • Old Earth Creationism (and its various subsects).
  • Young Earth Creationism: The Earth was created between 5,700 and 10,000 years ago. Science is a lie. Dinosaurs never existed and fossils were created to test our faith (or the dinosaurs existed alongside humans and perished in the Great Flood). Radiometric dating is just fake and made up.

I don't know. I just don't think that 42% of Americans are YEC. I definitely believe that at least 42% believe in some form of Creationism, but just cannot believe that the anti-intellectualism that is YEC is is that widespread.

Far, far, far less than half of Americans vote period. "Half of Americans" don't vote for Republicans.

That's not true. Presidential turnout is usually between 50-60%. Midterms between 40-45%.

How about municipal and state elections? You know, where your vote matters the most.

Still astonished me that a country can claim top be a democracy without mandatory voting.

Voting in America is awful and politicians prefer it that way.

I vote for the pirate party, probably the most liberal party in Finland.

On the internet, though? I'm a neo-nazi.

I'm slightly liberal.

I'm going to decide that you must be American, and therefore wrong. Because Eurocentrism is objectively correct, we can say that compared to the European gold standard, all Americans are racist conservatives.

:(

I totally read the first sentence and didn't see which comment it was in reference to/which sub it was in. I admit to, in my mind, starting to laugh in incredulity.

You won the poe's law award (the good version of it).

Well, wanting to bring back Jim Crow is pretty racist. So I can understand why they think that about you.

Ever since that huge influx of new users, the circlejerk has been heavily diluted. It reminds me of 2XC going default.

Half of the 20yo+ SRD female sirens would probably fuck this in 2 seconds flat without a 2nd thought of age

Probably only if they already had someone in their snares, and desired more "excitement" and a suppressed hunger for strudel in their lives.

I find it shocking anyone can possibly think this guy was in the wrong here.

I've seen 14 year old girls I'd never be able to tell were actually 14.

It's not like he went out trying to fuck children.

If this had happend in Germany no one would have given a shit because the age of consent here is 14 anyway.

Don't you know that that's morally wrong? If you don't know, SRS or CB will tell you: their morality trumps everyone elses.

their morality trumps everyone elses.

It's so funny to me, because this is the same exact position hardlining righties use to justify enforcing their own generally Christian ideals on the population. The same hardlining righties they call ideologue bigots.

There is literally zero difference between these two types of people, except in that they disagree on almost every thing. lol. Cut from the same cloth

Often literally. Many of the most intolerant and extreme liberals I know grew up in conservative Christian families. They did a 180 and rejected the surface ideology, but not a lot of the attitudes that came with it.

I've noticed that about 20th feminists too. People like Germaine Greer - every time she opens her mouth to talk on my behalf she thinks I share the same outdated poisonous anti-sex Puritanism that she isn't clever or kind enough to see past.

Ummm...yeah? That's exactly the point.

Oh, sorry, I didn't see that this was in SRDD. I'll assume you get that, but I'll still leave it for anyone that doesn't. My bad, though.

Yes, I definitely get that. I still feel it's worth pointing out whenever the topic comes up though, in case someone else hasn't yet made the connection for themselves.

No problem

AH yes, back to the old. All of Reddit excuses all child rape argument. Stay classy SRD.
