Edit2: Ya know, P&S, I feel like we need to have a heart-to-heart chat here. Every day something happens and people in this subreddit say the equivalent of "not all cops." To me, it sounds like you're saying that what "those cops" are doing isn't right and you don't want to be associated with it.

So why is it you guys rush to downvote the very things you should be saying "yeah, those cops are jerks and shouldn't be doing that"? I post about stopping legally to check a message and instant negative karma. You'd think that P&S would be jumping at the opportunity to say "yup! not against the law, you should be left alone," instead of "well, it doesn't matter that it's against the law, I don't like it so you shouldn't be doing it."

Sheesh.

I'm not sure what everyone is getting all worked up about. It does seem there are a lot of wannabe cops in this sub who are all about enforcing the letter of the law, that is if they actually ever get hired.

I text on and off duty in my car. I never have (almost 10 years in this job), and I don't ever foresee stopping anyone for texting and driving. Much bigger fish to fry out there.

I feel like people looked at my post as "anti-cop" instead of just looking at it for what it was.

Responding to your edits. Not everyone who has the ability to downvote here is a police officer. Of the 3 people who replied, 1 is an unverified cop who agrees with you, 1 has flair that says "not a cop" and the last we have no idea what he does. People downvoting you could very well be anti-cop people.

Sorry dude but legal or not you shouldn't be. It's not a question of can or can not it's a question of if you should and while operating a vehicle unless you're in park off the road you shouldn't.

Sorry dude, but if it's not illegal I give no fucks about your opinion and don't need to be stopped because people think their opinions trump the law. If I'm stopped at a light and legally take two seconds to check my phone, there's absolutely zero reason I should be stopped.

Believe it or not, I work with officers on a daily basis and make a point to be polite, regardless of their demeanor when I have to interact with them outside if work...

Example, I was having a shitty New Years Eve and it got worse when I blew a fiat and had to pull over. I thought the officer behind me was pulling up to help me. Nope...got yelled at for pulling over in a bad area, despite it being the safest area at the time. I ended up driving a half mile on my rim because the other option, in his words, was he would drive my car while I sat in the back of his vehicle. I wasn't about to be arrested for having a flat.

So no...not everyone who disagrees with something an LEO does is an obnoxious jerk.

I never said you should be stopped I'm saying you shouldn't be doing it at all. While you give zero fucks about my opinion anything you have to say or read via text is so fuckin trivial there's no reason for you to check while you're driving.

So fill your boots, check your useless texts. You're still an asshole for doing it.

You're right, I don't need to check them while I'm driving...so I don't. I check them when I'm stopped. Yet I'm an asshole compared to the guy who reads the newspaper, drinks burning hot coffee, and eats breakfast while their vehicle is actually moving.
