'No Stupid Questions' Thread (self.tf2)
Let's create a judgement-free thread where we can ask any question we want without fear of being laughed at.
Is there any reason to use anything but degreaser ever in 6v6 or 9v9 comp?
Nope.
Although in lower level highlander matches some maps lend themselves to flanking with the phlog if you can get behind the enemy team.
If you're flanking why not use Backburner instead of Phlog?
Beats me, I've always just heard people recommend phlog. If I had to hazard a guess though I would say it is because the phlogs dmg output is more reliable.
I guess if you have the crits ready its a surefire way you can just steam roll whoever you're ambushing regardless of where they're facing.
Backburner only has a 90 degree registration angle for crits. Phlog does the job much, much better.
Nope. Pyro's role in competitive heavily relies on his ability to control an area, so anything that hurts his airblast (backburner and phlog) is right out, and the weapon switch speed is much more favorable than afterburn, which is near meaningless against coordinated teams.
I've heard that pyro can get away with playing the flank and ambushing people with the backburner in iron and steel, but good teams will shut that down hard.
I played around 500 hours of Tf2, but none in the last 3 years.
If I rev it up again today, what should I know?
I played primarily soldier, pyro, and heavy.
there's been a ton of changes, some more subtle than other, as far as I remember the changes that changed up the game the most would be:
Engineers have a weapon that lets them repair and pick up buildings at range, though it leaves them much weaker in close quarters
Dead Ringer no longer makes spies near-invincible, but it gives them a speed boost
Heavy now has a 1(?) second period after beginning to wind up where damage and accuracy are lowered, after that period damage/accuracy will go back to normal
Soldier and demo have a parachute that lets them float in the air at will
Scout got a 150+ damage combo with the Sandman stun and a throwable meat cleaver
Demoman got easy charge turning, increased speed and charge-meter-on-kill stats added to various new and existing items
Let me know if you think I missed anything.
Natascha and Brass Beast heavies now have damage resistance. This means a fully charged headshot won't always kill a heavy unless you use the machina.
You can now pick up weapons from your teammates or enemies that are the same class. For example, if you kill a soda popper scout with your scattergun as scout, you can pick up his soda popper if you'd like.
This mechanic also allows for dropped mediguns to retain their charge.
There is a new medigun for medic called the Vaccinator that allows for damage resistance of certain types: bullet, explosion, and fire.
There are now a couple of weapons that give spy speed boosts, so be wary of that.
I believe its the Natashia and Brass Beast, not the Tomislav

Can't believe I forgot about picking up weapons, I've become so used to it already and it's only been a few weeks.
Panic attack is bad, liberty launcher got buffed, tomislav is currently the best heavy weapon, air strike + base jumper or gunboats are the best soldier loadout, and reserve shooter is the best secondary. They've added some new maps and game modes, but I would say to avoid mannpower and robot destruction. Try about Mann vs Machine. It's a lot of fun.
Some of the biggest class changes are all the weird ways to play different classes, particularly soldier and demo. Spy has changed a lot recently as well. I'm sure I've skipped a ton, but hopefully this is some info for starters. Also, scorch shot is better than detonator.
Stock is still better than the Tomislav in most situations.
they're equal
tomislav wins the range battle
stock wins close up
tomislav wins if both heavies spin up at the same time
it's preference

Whenever I try making grilled cheese the cheese is ice cold but the bread is burned. What do I do?
You're not flipping it often enough, or you're keeping it on too much.
Put mayo on the outsides of the bread (i know, sounds disgusting), not the insides, it wont burn as much and will actually taste much better. Then flip often.
Also don't use super thick bread.
I always put butter on the outside of the bread. Tastes better

Go with a lower-temperature for better results. You want the heat to permeate throughout so that the cheese melts but the bread cooks slowly. However, here's a method that will make that even easier:
Butter in the skillet, and drop two slices of bread in, separated from each other. Cook until facedown sides are golden but stop before they're browning, unless you prefer a crunchier grilled cheese.
(Next step is easier if you take bread out onto a plate for preparation, but you can do it right on the skillet if you're fast and not using your fingers)
Flip slices of bread so the golden sides are face-up. Lay cheese onto these sides, then flip one slice of bread onto the other, sandwiching the cheese between the pre-cooked sides.
Cook on one side until golden, then flip and cook until the other side is golden as well.
Remove and enjoy.
The pre-cooking ensures the middle stays a bit crispy, and the heat helps melt the cheese faster. No more solid/chilled cheese in the middle while the outsides are burnt.

You the man!
use a toaster oven. butter one side of each slice of bread and place on rack butter-side down. put one slice of cheese on top of each piece. toast. when the bottom of the bread is brown and cheese is melty, remove from toaster oven, smush pieces together, and prepare for a mouthgasm.

get a grill designed for bread
edit: it's called a sandwich press
You should try covering the pan in some way when you cook it. It keeps in the heat much like you would when you're boiling water, and results in a more even heating of the entire sandwich, rather than just one side.
Additionally, keep in mind that the harder a cheese is, the longer it will take to melt. Cheeses such as American and Mozzarella are very soft, and thus melt much easier. Harder cheeses such as muenster or (god help you if you put this on a grilled cheese) Parmesan will take literally forever.

For those of you who use the YER for spy, Why? Also do you think it would be OP if the YER was moved to the spies PDA slot?
It's quite fun to get a stab in front of a sentry gun and not get instantly mowed down. Not to mention useful too.
You just have to rely on your cloak a LOT more than usual. Hide in places the enemy won't look, like around a corner, or above them.
As for the PDA question, I dont quite get it. Would that mean if you put it in your PDA the disguise on kill works with all knives? YER + Kunai might be fun.
Getting stabs in front of a sentry is nice but that's a fairly specific situation. I guess for me the knife just falls short in so many ways.
Yeah, YER for PDA slot would mean the disguise on kill worked for all knifes. It seems a little weird to me for to develop a new disguise system for a knife when it would probably worked better as it's own disguise kit (with minor adjustments). The ability doesn't seem like it would be that powerful on other knifes and kinda comes off as a playstyle preference more than anything else.
I used the YER to learn the back -> front rule. When going for a stab, i like to go for the slow guy or the guy at the back first. If you're going heavy speed and dont want to, drop your disguise at the opportune moment to chase the demoman.

Yes. Taking out the smart Engie that's hanging out by their Dispenser that's too far away from the Sentry to do the usual Backstab/Sap combo.

So...
If a soldier shoots a rocket jumper at a pyro, and the Pyro reflects it and hits the soldier; does the soldier goes flying in the air or does nothing happen?
Nothing happens; it's as if the pyro was a soldier also using the rocket jumper.
If I remember correctly, there used to be a glitch where, if you deflected Rocket Jumper rockets close enough to hit yourself with them, they would deal self-damage.
Thank you! Had me wondering for far too long.

nothing happens, it's as if you were firing rj rockets at them as soldier
you can, however, reflect rocket jump with rj rockets at absolutely no cost to health
Nothing happens. It may as well be the other team's rocket-jumper rocket, which wouldn't do anything.
The pyro can however use the rocket to jump, with some good timing and skills.

Am i just crazy or does the double jump for scout not work sometimes? Even if i spam the spacebar, it just refuses to work for some jumps.
It's a ground jump and an air jump, not just two jumps.
I haven't found the backing documentation in the Wiki yet but, if you fall for too long or if you're in the air for too long, then the second jump won't work.
Edit: Ignore me. See /u/fishypole's reply/explanation below.
i don't think that's right
i know that if you mistime your jump off a ledge, you can't doublejump because you already used your air jump
but i've never experienced what you said, i can double jump after falling from the top of hightower to the rocks below
That might be what's happening to me then. It usually happens to me leaving second BLU spawn on cp_gorge. I'll jump off the spawn ledge then my airjump almost never works when I try to airjump just before hitting the ground.
There's a few things you may consider. If you are already in the air when you press your jump (say a soldier rocket knocks you in the air), you're only going to get one jump.
If you're running to jump over a gap, you might be running off the platform slightly before you use your jump. You don't get two air jumps unless you're using the atomizer.
If a pyro airblasts you up, you have to wait about one second before using your jump or you'll just jump straight up. This is really annoying when you're fighting reserve shooter pyros because you essentially can't dodge after being airblasted. You have to wait a moment before you get your directional jump back.

Oh thank god, I've been waiting for a thread like this. I'd love answers for any one of the following questions.
1) Should I craft my non-tradable achievement weapons into scrap metal? And why would one craft something like a class token?
2) Why can't I seem to find unique items on the steam community market? Also, how do I search backpack.tf for items with specific paint or unusual effects? [Answered]
3) If I am ubering someone and lose/reconnect with them for a second, does that count as "switching" targets and thus eat up 3 [Edit: 0.5] seconds of uber time? <----------[Yes:2, No:1]
4) Sometimes it seems like I can fire two crossbows after reloading and sometimes it seems like I can only fire one (even if I press r first). Does this happen to anyone else, and if so, what's going on?
5) When I see "non-craftable" items on backpack.tf, does that mean they are also non-tradeable and will need gift wrap? [Answered] New question: is there a downside to buying an uncraftable hat if you're not planning to craft it?
BONUS QUESTIONS:
Mumble: When I'm trying to use mumble with steam, it seems like mumble is really quiet in comparison to the game noise. I've tried putting "volume "0.25"" in my scripts and I've clicked the "Attenuate applications by" option, but I still have trouble hearing people. I'm on a mac, by the way.
SFM: I am using parallels on a mac and every time I try to control the camera via click-and-drag, it spins wildly and I end up looking at the ceiling. Has anyone else here gotten SFM to work on Parallels?
Z-2, guys!
Edit: One more question. How do I strikethrough things on reddit? Double ~ just does ~~this. ~~ Answered, obviously
1: If you don't have the HHH or the hat you can get instead you can use the achievement weapons for that since the result will be always be untradeable. As for class tokens you can use them to craft reskins like the AWPer Hand or Freedom Staff but its random.
2: Only unique items with the limited quality such as Bills, the original 9 hats, etc. can be listed on the market. For advanced search options on backpack go to the classifieds and click the ... next to the search bar.
3: IIRC uber drains based on how many targets you've ubered, and this only applies to the stock medigun, so it shouldn't drain faster.
5: Unless the item says Untradeable it is tradeable without gift wrap.
1) Question. What is the HHH?
2) Oh god. I can't believe I've missed the "..." button this whole time.
5) Oh, I see--I thought uncraftable meant untradeable. Why are uncraftable items cheaper? Is there that big an upside to the ability to use a certain hat in crafting?
1: Headless Horsemann's Headtaker, made with the Haunted Metal you get from beating him. Since its an achievement item also the HHH and Spine Chilling Skull (which I think is the name of the hat) will also be untradeable.
5: For cheaper hats people often buy to recraft into another hat, mostly when new hats come out for the craft numbers. Since uncraft hats can't be used, they aren't wanted as much. If you're purely looking for looks uncrafts are a cheaper alternative most of the time.
5) Follow up question: What is the deal with craft numbers?
First 100 items to be crafted for anything that has the code to support it will show #1-100 publicly, such as #1 Bonk Helm. This makes them slightly more valuable or a lot more valuable depending on hat, number, etc. Weapons can have them too but the more recent ones didn't have the code to support it so they can't have #1-100 in their name.

I've crafted class tokens if I'm trying to get a specific weapon like the ham.
You can only buy/sell cosmetics and non-weapons on the market, unless they have some quality to it. That's just how it is.
I have no idea.
That's a glitch, probably lag. You're only firing one.
There are lots of non-craftable items, but that doesn't mean they can't be traded. For example, limited-edition and promo items can't be crafted, but they can be traded. The frying pan is a good example.
Bonus 1) You should re calibrate your mumble if you aren't using push to talk. Also, you're using headphones, right? If you're not, the interference with game noise could be causing your problems.
Bonus 2) I've played on a mac, but haven't used those settings, so I can't really help you out here. That being said, I own a mac and run windows through bootcamp when I play TF2. I like the way it handles on windows much more. I would recommend trying that if you're willing to put in 2 hours installing windows.

What's the best way to kill heavies as a soldier?
Ambush. Hit directly. Obtain solid cover - like a wall, not just the cart.
Peek out, fire, duck back in, repeat. Remember, your rocket launcher fires rockets that are to the right of the crosshairs. This means you can peek out halfway and then fire, instead of having to move all the way out.
Height will help as well. Players don't look up. They just don't.
If you don't have solid cover, keep moving around. Don't try to engage the Heavy in a DPS race - he will win every time.

If you can't kill him in 2 rockets, find cover. If there's no cover, you need to either jump away (if you jumped in and have one rocket left) or fire the other two and hope you did enough damage.
If there's a Medic nearby, assume he's at least 350-400 hp. Don't engage without an escape route/cover or backup.

Most Unusuals are purely cosmetic. Unusual hats and weapons (except the Horseman's Headtaker) have special particle effects that appear on the hat or weapon. They're basically for show and bragging rights.
Oh, ok. Makes more sense now. Thanks.
yeah unusuals are just cosmetic. stranges count kills, and there are strange "parts" you can add to strange weapons/cosmetics that count very specific things like "unusual wearing player kills" or "medics killed with full ubercharge"
unusuals are special because of how rare they are, from a wiki discussion where someone did some math, the average unusual drop rate from a crate is 0.7042%
this level of rarity makes them very sought after and quite expensive in some cases
(a burning flames team captain sold for ~$13,000 last time)
You're thinking of Stranges. Unusuals have a special visual effect that shows while the item is active (on fire, swirling TF logo, etc.)
You get Stranges by using a Strangifier (made with Chemistry Sets) or a 10% chance from opening a crate, and an Unusual can only be found by a 1% chance in a crate (or crafting the Horseless Headless Horsemann's Headtaker).

Oh, alright. Thanks for the advice.

Since you said you don't understand the hierarchy of item qualities, I'll tell you what they mean:
Unique: Standard items bought from the Mann Co. store or received as drops.
Vintage: Items crafted before the Mann-Conomy Update, where certain crafting recipes were made cheaper.
Strange: Items that track certain stats (mostly kills, but there are some unique cases), gotten from crates (10% chance) or applying a Strangifier, made from randomly-dropping Chemistry Sets.
Genuine: Items received from promotional giveaways, such as preordering a Steam game before a certain date or participating in events. Their rarity fluctuates; some are easy to find (the Sun-on-a-Stick), while some can be very expensive (Robo-Sandvich).
Unusual: Rare items with a visual particle effect (as explained before). Most Unusuals are cosmetics, but taunts and Decorated Weapons can be Unusual as well. There is a 1% chance of getting one from a crate.
Collector's: Made with special Chemistry Sets, requiring 200 copies of one item to turn them into a Collector's item. For bragging rights only.
Haunted: Items restricted to Halloween or Full Moon events.
Killstreak: Weapons that keep track of how many kills you make each life, with your streak being shown to everyone in the server you are on at certain numbers. Some Killstreak weapons can have sheens, which are visual flairs similar to Unusuals. They are made from Fabricators, which are given at the end of certain Mann vs. Machine missions, and require robot parts to make, which are also MvM rewards.
Decorated: Standard weapons with special, colorful paint jobs. Their appearance is measured in five categories: Factory New, Minimal Wear, Field-Tested, Well-Worn, and Battle Scarred. The paint's quality depends on how high the quality is. Factory New is untouched, while more scratches and peeling are present as the quality drops. Field-Tested is the most common, while Well-Worn and Minimal Wear are uncommon and Factory New and Battle Scarred are rare.
Hope this helped!

What is the deal with TF2 birthday? That's in August right? I want my party hat!
What crates are dropping now? I get a lot of super-shitty #92 which I've stopped opening (mostly strange outclassed secondaries) how much is #92 worth in metal?
Should I fear trade exploits? Because I do. There aren't any glitches that let people take all my stuff when I'm trading with them right?
I bought the spy demo and heavy starter packs and now have duplicate achievement weapons, one uncraftable and one untradeable. What is the best thing I can do with one aside from smelting for an untradeable hat?
Do hats drop at all? I'm p2p w >150 hr and am 2 scrap away from being able to craft my 1st hat (though I've crafted weapons with 3 scrap previously)
It's the anniversary of the TF franchise as a whole. It's the 16th of August I think.
https://wiki.teamfortress.com/wiki/Mann_Co._Supply_Crate/Active_series
No, there isn't any trade exploit. The only way someone could steal your item is by tricking you into doing something stupid, or by hacking your account.
Craft untradable things with untradable things. If you use an untradable weapon and a normal weapon, the resulting scrap will be untradable, so don't waste it.
Hats do drop. I only got 4 I think, and I played like 1500 hours since I'm P2P.
DON'T CRAFT HATS. Just buy them from someone. Most of them are selling for 1.33 ref, and you have to use 3 ref if you want to craft one.

How can I best counter scouts as soldier and pyro? They are always too fast for me to catch with my primary and it takes like 2 shotgun shots for them to kill me. Are they simply very OP or do I plainly suck at this game?
And why is there every once in a while a supergood player that kills everyone as sniper or spy and just keeps messaging: ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)?
Also I see a lot of people talking about pubs and community servers, how can I find community servers and what is the difference? And what are some more fun servers/gamemodes, because I'm starting to get kind of sick of Capture the Flag and Push the Cart...
What is scraptipping? I see it happening a lot on this sub, but their website doesn't really explain anything.
Last question: Why are hats and costumes so expensive when weapons are so cheap? At least in the community market, things in the Manco store are very expensive (why?).
not sure about pyro (i don't play him) but as soldier if you're not using the shotgun then you have to be very predictive of his movement with your rockets and aim a full 2 seconds ahead, otherwise use your shotgun and win thanks to having more HP than him
pubstompers are common, a lot of people find it fun to topscore against newer players. i can't explain the lenny face with anything but "they're trolling"
generally people refer to valve servers found via the "Play Now" button in the main menu as "pubs", and community servers being non-valve run servers found through the server browser. as for gamemodes, there are 8 options in the Play Now menu option, try them all! i mainly play payload (or push-the-cart as you call it :b) but there's king of the hill, control points, attack defense, and a few more "official" gamemodes. there's some community made gamemodes out there on the aforementioned community servers, you'll just have to find those on your own i'm not too knowledgeable on them
i'm not sure but from what that link looks like, it's a way to clean out your inventory of duplicate weapons and convert them to scrap metal, which is used as currency in the economy
the mann co store is EXTREMELY outdated, and is a noob trap. never ever buy a weapon from the mann co store, they are literally worth half of a penny. check out scrap.tf, you can get 2 weapons for 1 scrap metal. this is because when you make a scrap metal in-game, you have to use 2 weapons. the entire economy is based around this. 9 scrap metal = 1 refined metal. keys are $2.50 in the store, and therefore will always be worth $2.50 until valve changes the price, if they ever do for some dumb fucked up reason. hats are more expensive than weapons because simply put, there are less of them than there are weapons. supply and demand. i could write an entire essay here about the tf2 economy but a lot of other people already have and have done a better job of it, but i hope this at least answered your question
So the “server browser" is the “Search servers" bellow the “Play Now"?
I remember at one point Tour of Duty Tickets market prices also matched the Mann Co Store. Is that still true?
So as Soldier you might already know you use splash damage a lot. Scouts can jump higher than you, so preferably you're always on the high ground. Sometimes they can double jump in unexpected patterns, but you just need to calculate where they hit the ground and shoot there.
As Pyro you're very good against them close up. Wait until they jump, then airblast them. It stops them completely in their tracks. With the Degreaser you can switch rapidly to your shotgun to kill them, or light them on fire first and flare them after the blast. It can be done with the stock or Backburner as well, but with the Degreaser it's easy mode.
People that spam chat with whatever after a kill are just looking to make people frustrated. They are looking for confirmation of their skills in the form of raging in chat. Don't pay attention to them. Don't even taunt them when you finally get revenge. They're dicks, ignore them.
Community servers are a form of pubs. Pubs are basically all servers that are accessible for anyone, unlike lobbies or scrims for instance, because you need to enlist or be invited to a private server for those. Community servers usually have a regular playerbase with a higher average skill level and less disparity (the best player isn't 1000x better than the worst). Any server you see in the server browser that doesn't say "Valve xx server" but have a different name, like Skial, Hampshire Heavies, or FirePowered.
Fun gamemodes are subjective, of course, but you could try searching for jumpmaps, balloon race, dodgeball, prop hunt, or death run.
You can make a wallet with scrap metal that's connected to your backpack. If you scraptip it takes some scrap metal from your backpack and transfers it to the one you're giving it to.
Weapons are in abundance. Playing regularly gives a player about 8 weapons a week. Cosmetics on the other hand drop once in a blue moon (I've had like 5 hat drops and 2 paints in my 2375 hours). It's logical that something drops in price if there's more of it.
The community market price is based on supply and demand, the Mann Co. store prices are set by Valve when the weapons/cosmetics/whatever are first brought out. These prices don't suffer the same inflation.

first things first: play a bit of those classes. not enough to get pro, but enough to get an idea on routes a scout or solly will take and how they move/aim. Know your enemy and whatnot. This is really the best advice for anyone wanting to learn how to get better at dealing with a given class.
second, learn your maps. pyro is neither offensive or defensive, but rather support. Pure disruption in an asbestos suit. The reason for this is that the pyro works best by knowing where enemies tend to move and where choke points are. As they have more mobility then you you're to play smart by using a mix of patience and baiting to get enemies to come into a more confined area where they can't jump away and you can either sneak up and incinerate them, airblast them into confusion and burn them up in a more direct confrontation or airblast them off a cliff. knowing where your medkits and supply crates are means less hoofing it back to spawn, a dispenser or a medic and more chances to apply constant pressure the enemy team
flame at an angle. always try to attack while moving at a strange angle so they can't properly aim at you. as the fire is a constant stream if you can place it where they're going to be, they're going to hurt.
pick your fights. Pyro's primary has limited range and his secondary is exactly that: your backup. try to engage the enemy on your terms if possible. crits happen, sure, but engaging on your terms gives you the upper hand and better control of the fight. And pyro's disruption and control is second to none.
don't be afraid to disengage. lighting them on fire and airblasting them away to make space and run away if things get dicey is not being a coward: it's being smart. you're telling them to either expend energy and chase or back off and heal off the damage over time. Any fight you can walk away from is a win, IMO.
with those points out of the way, here's some more specific tips:
Soldiers: -for the most part, learn to reflect. you'll rarely reflect them all, but you'll rarely need to. reflect the ones that come towards you and scoot out of the indirect ones' AoE. a full Air Strike 8-missile salvo is brutal and highly deadly but survivable if you reflect intelligently.
-Don't go in a shotgun war. they have more HP then you and you're likely to lose if you try to trade blows. shotgun is for if they retreat.
-Look up. Soldiers like to rocket jump and can attack from up high. these attacks can be difficult to return.
-Time your attacks with their jump arcs. Once committed to a rocket jump, it's difficult to turn it another direction, so you can get a good idea where they're going to land. aim your flares, fires or shotguns in that direction rather then flailing and wasting ammo in a mid-arc. if you can git gud though, feel free to clip icarus' wings. he needs to be brought down a peg.
-don't generally try to melee a solly unless you can do so from behind. they have more hp and can trade blows pretty well. that and eating a point-blank rocket without an airblast is harsh.
-Directly killing a soldier will usually occur one of two ways, reflecting a rocket or by bringing them somewhere they can't rocket jump away from and outplaying them. their rockets have the same gap between launches as your airblast, so you can actually juggle them with a mix of airblasts and flamethrower, throwing their aim off.
-a smart soldier can bait out airblasts. even learning a given solly's rocket pattern can be tricky or work against you, and a lot of it is learning shooting animations and intuition, but try to airblast if you can but don't get discouraged if you fail. it happens.
Scouts: -faster and more mobile then soldiers, scouts are hard to melee, shoot or flamedown, so look at their jumps. like a soldier's rocket jump if you can see the scout, you can probably see where he's going. This allows you to plant flares, buckshots and fire in their path.
-scouts have low hp and a good damage output, so try to engage near a health pack. light them on fire, airblast them away as they go for it, grab it for yourself and you can often either scare them off or leave them to run away and die, barring they're carrying milk. they might try to bring you down but if you can see them, you can juggle them.
-fight while knowing where your walls are. scouts are more mobile then you and you don't want to wind up suddenly hitting a wall and being unable to maneuver. in that regard, cover your exits: keep the jumpy bugger from blocking you off with fire and airblasts. he's got less health but the FaN and his other scatterguns are painful when they bodyshot.
-your own shotgun isn't a bad thing this time around, actually. scout's HP VS yours means he doesn't want to try to trade blows unless he can out maneuver you. use this to your advantage when picking your fights. it also allows you to fight back as scouts can otherwise outgun you by simply staying outside your primary's limited range.
I don't play a lot of Pyro, but if you want to kill Scouts as Soldier you need to predict their movement a bit. If a Scout jumps, and you shoot a rocket at them, they can dodge that rocket with their second jump. If they use their second jump, however, the only thing they can do to dodge a rocket is to strafe. So if you wait for the second jump, and then try to hit a rocket where they will land, you will most likely get some splash damage on them (and a pretty good amount of damage, if they're close).
Another thing you can do is to, instead of trying to shoot Scouts in the air, try to shoot walls and other things near them, when they are in the air. If they are close to the wall, you will get almost as much damage as if you hit them directly, but it's way safer for you.
And also, if the Scout gets too close, you can always rocket jump away, to get yourself into a better position (preferably with some height advantage), and perhaps deal some damage to them at the same time.
Finally, if you have a Shotgun, and your aim is good, use it (if the Scout is jumpy and difficult to hit with rockets). I almost always use the Gunboats, so I have to rely on my launcher instead.

Why are so many tf2 players content with being bad? I see so many people with good numbers of hours who just don't know how to think about the game... i've had people right here in this subreddit tell me stuff like the pyro counters scout, or that powerhouse is the most balanced map in the game atm, or any of the old favorites about pyro w+m1 being op or demo actually using his primary effectively 'taking no skill'...
It's not difficult to see why all this is wrong, but it requires people to think while playing rather than just mindlessly booting up the same map every day and going through the same boring sequence and never improving. Is it really so hard to think and play at the same time?
demo actually using his primary effectively 'taking no skill'
The bigger issue is spam takes no skill, spam is powerful, and demo's primary is great at it, so it's easy to mistakenly connect effective demo play will no skill.
Is it really so hard to think and play at the same time?
No, not at all, and some people enjoy that while others don't. Playing a mindless shooter is a great way to kill time and have fun for a couple of hours. All some people need to know to have fun with the game is "if I click on the guy he explodes" and that's enough for them.

Hi um. I'm not very good at TF2. I'm just a little shy of 800 hours, and I'm not good. I can't carry my team to victory, I die a lot, and I don't have one class I'm really good with. I don't think I'm content with being bad, I'm a rather competitive person, but rather I think that it's hard to get better in tf2. First, some people on this subreddit are very elitist, I recall someone once saying that no one under 1,000 hours had no understanding of the game. It feels like some don't want us intruding on their private, unusual party. Secondly, playing competitively is hard and intimidating. Almost 0 strategy from pubs carries over to 6's, there's no real vibrant competitive scene, and I personally feel very inadequate. But that's just me. I don't think TF2 is good at facilitating high level play, and as such most people aren't very good.

Although you can't really escape how hyperbolic people are nowadays, know that it's bullshit. Why are so many tf2 players content with being bad?
Because for a lot of people, having to play a single game for 1000+ hours to just get okay at it is simply too much to ask.
Not to mention the fact that anyone that is paying at <40 FPS is going to downright suck (and I say this as someone who struggles to keep stable 60).
or that powerhouse is the most balanced map in the game atm
It pretty much is.
I can give you a safe bet that it's because of some people's framerate. I have a friend who played at ~10FPS. I couldn't stand seeing them at that, so I got them an FPS config and they now play at 30FPS. His skill level in-game rose immensely because of it, but it seems he has pretty much plateaud skill-wise unless he manages to rise his FPS level.

Demoknight can be fun at times, but if you're playing against even a decent team, they will blast you back, either with Airblasting you or rockets/stickies at your feet.
It has no random crits, does -80% less damage to buildings (although the charged shot disables them) and it can't be crit boosted (i.e kritzkreig). It used to also have 10% less damage and 5% slower reload rate but not anymore. The upsides are alright, no ammo needed and a 1-Shot on 150 hp classes is pretty good. It's fun on pubs, I will say
Demoknight is a powerful class, yes, but the Stickybomb Launcher is even more powerful, and you will need that damage output in competetive. For sentries, and for enemy Heavies and Medics. Also incredibly powerful with a Kritzkrieg on your team.
The Cow Mangler is a decent weapon, since it uses no ammo, and deals the same damage as stock (I think). However, it's not very useful for dealing with sentries (unless you have some teamwork, in which case you can use the charge shot to disable the sentries). And I think, although I'm not entirely sure, that it has a slightly slower reload time, despite the description not saying so.

What is tf2 center

What is a good way to play spy in mvm? Spy is the only class I can't seem to wrap my head around.
Bots in MvM perform just like bots in offline practice mode. They are almost completely oblivious to disguises unless you are disguised as them and truly believe you're dead if you DR. Sapper is also effective against all bots in MvM.
Best loadout is probably Diamondback, YER or Kunai, stock sapper, and DR.
Two questions.
1) Why the stock sapper over the red tape?
2) With the YER it doesn't change into a robo disguise as fast as it does for a human, what can I do for when I use it and they know it's me.
You should really be using the sapper to stun robots and then quickly stab them, so I guess I misspoke. Either one would be fine.
I guess you could stab as many as possible before trying to DRing out or just DRing after they start shooting and wait for the ones that know to target you to pass/get killed. Strangely enough, bots don't really notice the DR decloak sound as much as they notice the stock Invis decloak sound.

How do I install scripts on my mac? Want the m1+x5 script for scout.
First, enable your ~/Library folder. How you do so depends on which version of Mac OS X you're running so I've just included a link to the Google search.
Next, once you can see your ~/Library folder, navigate to the following TF2 Config folder:
/Users/YourUsername/Library/Application Support/Steam/SteamApps/common/Team Fortress 2/tf/cfg
Put any commands you want for all your classes into autoexec.cfg.
Put commands you want for Scout in scout.cfg, Medic in medic.cfg, etc. As shown in the Console Wiki page. You may have to create these files.
Use TextEdit or, for bonus points, install TextWrangler from the Mac App Store. That's my favorite free text editor.
