I find it interesting that I am unable to access either of those subs using Reddit is Fun

Same on Relay. Most likely because this is brand new code and hasn't been properly implemented.

I just tried Alien Blue and its also unable to load them.

Baconreader as well

There is no API endpoint for this yet, this means that developers aren't able to implement this in their apps. So these subs are broken in the mobile apps.

As how it's written now, the subs show up with the same error message as a non-existing subreddit.

[–]Mavee 3

Oh for fuck sake. Even if it were a rush job, would it be that much of a hassle to update the API?

Yes, and even if it was there would still need to be an update on their end.

Yeah it looks like you have to "unlock" each individual one first before accessing it using an app.

You have to log in from a browser, accept the subreddit, and then it will be available on any app.

And nothing of value was lost!

I can't on Baconreader, it shows a 404.

(I accessed one of the ape subreddit. I'm sorry for offending anyone.)

So why exactly do they require a verified email to view them?

One of the commenters there said it best: left-wing authoritarianism. It's this mentality that gives these people the idea that they're better than everyone else, and therefore more capable of determining what people should and shouldn't be allowed to discus. The problem with this, of course, is the way it chills free speech and leads to ever increasing censorship and encroachment on open discussions.

I'll take this opportunity to point out that Reddit is based in San Francisco.

"... They're totalitarian in the sense that they insist on controlling the thoughts and lives of others through forceful statist intervention. In doing so, they align themselves with the establishment which they pretend to be overthrowing. They're a buncha urban supremacists. Unyielding. Humorless. Stuffed to the gills with an unwarranted sense of their own cultural/moral superiority. I call them 'Bay Aryans.' "

That's an amazing excerpt and phrase. I highly look forward to giving this a comprehensive read.

Edit: That was more fantastic than I ever could've imagined. It perfectly sums up what my friend and I discuss about our experiences with San Francisco, and does so far more eloquently and humorously than I ever could have. 10/10, would highly recommend.

Just that quoted bit describes perfectly so much of the creepier behavior I've seen on reddit over the years. It's not limited to San Francisco, sadly. "Urban supremacists" is fitting.

Except that this is a private company choosing what they want to be easily accessible on their site, not statist intervention.

You mean, a government-run version of Reddit would be even worse ?

[–]Jesus_Harold_Christ -1ポイント0ポイント  (0子コメント)

I know you're being sarcastic, but it would probably worse in every conceivable way.

One of the things I loved about reddit was that it was a forum that tolerated people, communities and ideas that I loathed. Now it will soon be sanitized into Facebook with anonymity.....for now. So it goes. You would probably consider me left wing BTW.

[–]the_real_candlejack -1ポイント0ポイント  (0子コメント)

Feel free to fuck off to voat.

Wow, I hate disgusting subreddits too but this is going too far. They should just ban them instead of forcing people to give up extra personal info.

Yeah that part is highly troubling.

Make a fake email? Its not that complicated

You can always... I dunno... make a second email account. That doesn't have your personal info on it. Or that has someone else's info on it. Or that has made up info on it. Not really that hard.

forcing people to give up extra personal info.

It takes seconds to make a new email account. You don't have to give up personal info. I'm not saying I approve or anything, but claiming it's forcing you to give up personal info seems like quite a stretch to me.

[–]Ser_Davos_Cworth 2ポイント3ポイント  (0子コメント)

I think that keeping track of just who is visiting those subreddits also has a lot to do with it. It's profiling for potential future use. It's much easier to associate an email to a specific person (especially these days that most email addresses require your cell before they let you sign up) than it is to associate an IP address to a specific person.

I probably don't want to know... but the name /r/drawpeople doesn't seem that offensive... What is/was that subreddit?

I know it was modded by a bunch of CT mods.

They don't like people from Connecticut much, eh?

A subreddit where you draw people and can be as offensive as you want.

Wait, that doesn't seem so bad. Why is it being quarantined?

Probably this rule:

We love slurs. Use them regularly, please.

People draw people, shitily. But since the Ellen Pao deal, they've just been drawing shitty drawings of her and also of fat people.

I'm a bot, bleep, bloop. Someone has linked to this thread from another place on reddit:

If you follow any of the above links, please respect the rules of reddit and don't vote in the other threads. (Info / Contact)

[–]SuperConductiveRabbiundelete MVP 36

Can we call these what they are? Reddit Ghettos.

They're going to round up all the undesirable subreddits, put them in ghettos, then starve them by denying them fresh users, votes, and opinions via /r/all.

Also, I'll bet my next paycheck that the mods in the defaults are going to institute deletions and bans if you link to any of the verboten subreddits, further deepening the rift between admin-approved opinions and the forbidden thoughts. It'll get so bad that there'll need to be separate channels just to discuss the people in the ghettos. Established users will chill their own speech, and fear setting foot in the ghettoized subreddits, as they know the SJW bots will hunt them down and mark them for automoderator persecution.

Pretty easy to bet on something that's been happening for a while now.

[–]SuperConductiveRabbiundelete MVP 8

It's impossible to ban people for mentioning quarantined subreddits before those subreddits have actually been quarantined. They only started doing this today.

You don't think some subreddit's mods already had their bots banning links to certain communities?

[–]SuperConductiveRabbiundelete MVP 3

The list that SRS bans you for discussing is surely different than /r/news, which is different than TIL, and so on.

I'm saying that the admins are creating a canonical list and that it highly encourages mods to make these the subreddits that shall not be named. My bet is that this list is going to be used for moderator deletions/bans.

Comment history?

[–]SuperConductiveRabbiundelete MVP 0

There WERE no quarantined subreddits before today. It was just whatever the mods of that subreddit wanted to make AutoModerator ban you far. Now there's a canonical list that, I'm saying, will surely be used by mods for deletions/bans.

Automoderator cannot ban users; it can only remove comments. You'd need a custom bot to ban users.

(It can be used to notify the subreddit's mods via modmail and then have them ban it, though.)

You mean the Mr Rogers bot? https://slimgur.com/image/09j

No, that bot also doesn't ban users directly. It, as well, only removes comments (or reports them).

Thank you for a legitimate answer. Yes it is to send reports as you said among other things to mods that way a human can decide to ban or not. It makes the job of filtering discussions easier.

You are really grasping at straws and making assumptions as to why I posted it while you both try to derail the conversation.

No It just became habit for me because I don't want to give reddit any more page views than I have to. Please stay on subject. you never refuted anything about the bot, just started saying it isn't secret when I have been banned from r\news for telling people it exists. It being secret or not has nothing at all to do with the conversation at hand.

That's a great idea. That way it could be easy to tell which users participate in undesirable subreddits, and are currently outside of a Reddit ghettoized area. Users should be allowed out from time to time, of course, to conduct business, but they should probably have their voting privileges taken away when they're outside of the ghetto, so that they don't infect the safe space with their dangerous ideas.

They should also be prevented from hoarding Reddit Gold, and, instead, everyone who already has it should be warned that upon entering the ghettoized subreddit they will surrender it, and will be unable to earn anymore.

They already hand out yellow badges to people who mod the subs http://i.imgur.com/gKWHEnw.png

        [–]SuperConductiveRabbiundelete MVP -3

        Good point!

Though, now that I think about it, this makes it easy to compile all their names of people stuck in these ghettoized subreddits and put them in a document, so that they can be invited to someplace better and saved from Reddit. A bunch of names written down for Voat invites. A list, if you will.

What, voat is still invite only?

        [–]SuperConductiveRabbiundelete MVP -2

Looks like it isn't at the moment. Just in time to be flooded by racists. Great.

I made a subreddit if anyone cares to sub to for future updates to the list.

        /r/thequarantinelist/

While being grouped with these subs would seem somewhat insulting, I don't see why /r/pomf and /r/lolicons weren't given this treatment since they're not illegal but some people might find it shocking to see, the entire bloody point of the system.

It feels like I technically shouldn't be able to complain if it's against the content policy but it still seems fucking bullshit. All of these subs that exist solely to generate hate get ghetto'd but these subs of art of this thing everyone isn't comfortable with isn't allowed?

Thanks! I think I have them all already, the sorting by subscribers is nice though.

I think this list should remain prominent — until Reddit-core offers a way for people to find the quarantined subs

Here's another list. You were already linked this list here, NVM.

When I try to visit one of these subreddits it says I need to have a verified email to view it. Wtf is the point of that? I'm not giving reddit my email.

        /r/Ben_Garrison is quarantined.

It's a sub that tries to defame a libertarian cartoonist as being a Nazi. Something about 4chan?

        Thanks!

        You bet.

        Info on their game:

Shares multiple mods with CoonTown. Hmm... now why would supposed racists be so into elaborately defaming a successful and popular anti-authoritarian cartoonist?

Thanks, definitely one of the bigger subreddits quarantined.

Why in the world were they quarantined?

So no option to disable this quarantine shit in settings after all? I really have to click "continue" for each individual quarantined community?

Also what is up with not showing the number of subscribers? Seems like a stupid and pointless move.

        No.

I really have to click "continue" for each individual quarantined community?

Yes. /u/spez wants to make absolutely sure that you know what a horrible human being you are.

If I want to check one of these subreddits out, is there a way to temporarily unquarantine it?
