According to police in Florida’s Escambia County, an elderly woman and two adult sons who were murdered on July 28 may have even the victims of a “ritualistic killing” linked to the blue moon that occurred three days later.
County Sheriff David Morgan said yesterday that a person of interest — a white male, surprise surprise — has been identified in the case, but the individual has not yet been apprehended.
As far as how, exactly, the murders of Voncile Smith, 77 and her sons, 49-year-old Richard Smith and 47-year-old John Smith, were “ritualistic,” Sheriff Morgan explained that “it’s witchcraft, I’ll say that right now.”
He also noted that “the method of the murder — blunt force trauma … positioning of the bodies — and our person of interest has some ties to a faith or religion that is indicative of that. The time of death on Tuesday also coincides with what’s referred to as a blue moon, which occurs every three years.”

According to the Associated Press, the murders happened at Voncile Smith’s home. All the victims were reportedly attacked multiple times with a claw hammer. Their throats were slit, and one of the men had a gunshot to his right ear. There were no reported signs of forced entry at the house, and nothing was stolen from the safe. The family was described by officers as “very reclusive.” Their bodies were discovered during a welfare check after one of the son’s employers complained that he hadn’t shown up for work.
Not everyone is happy about the sheriff’s claims that the murders were “Wiccan” in nature. Wicca is typically considered a peaceful religion based on ancient traditions. Wiccan practitioners generally use rituals and forms of practical magic, but ritual killings or sacrifices are not part of the deal.
