That may be so but the precursor to these ideas and many of the philosophers came as a result of the American Revolution. Generally both the Declaration of the rights of man, the bill of rights and the US consitution are all held in their own right as highly influential to later theories of governance and of human rights. This does not absolve the US of its more recent atrocities, but it is a mistake to write off all of American history as meaningless.
