I hated Chris Evans because of that until I saw Sunshine where he knocked it out of the park.       I feel like Marvel threw that one in because it was going to have zero ethnic appeal (white exec terms) but it is about NORSE GODS, the fever dreams of a bunch of blonde haired/blue eyed people. If they were going to have a black guy they needed more, but instead they cast one for posterity and not only wasted an actor (though it looks like his part in Thor 3 might be insane if Avengers 2 is any indication) but also were more insulting to black people than if they'd just cast a white dude.           Devil's advocate:

          The argument wasn't really about the race, it was about the fact that they had to create a new backstory for something that otherwise would be easily understandable. They made a change that intentionally creates an obstacle that they need to explain to the audience. Most people wouldn't of had the issue if both Johnny and Sue had been black.

          Another perspective was that it seemed like they cast Johnny and Sue due to 'marketability'. As I mentioned above how some people wouldn't have had the issue if both Johnny and Sue were biological siblings, of the same race, it seems like they only kept Sue as white was because a white female lead is more marketable than a black. Whereas audiences are already use to black leading men.

          It sort of feels like diversity for diversity sake. Sort of like how they cast a female lead in the reboot/prequel to The Thing ignoring the fact that at the time the film takes place women weren't allowed at Antarctic research stations.

          Personally, I like Michael B. Jordan and don't really mind him in the role. My only issue is that I thought Jamie Bell would've been an absolutely stellar Human Torch - similar to his performance in Jumper. So when the casting was revealed I was disappointed that he'd be playing The Thing.

          And Bucky Barns is alive. He never dies in the comic, thank god. That would devastate Rogers and leave a lasting impact on him. He was totally a silver armed Soviet assassin the entire time.

          And the Mandarin was certainly a loveable goof ball actor in the comics.

          Comic book movies are riddled with inaccuracies. Why is the inclusion of a black torch the ultimate insult? What about the completely un-comic book like Dr. Doom is? Nobody is saying shit about that. Oh, because he isn't black?

          Torch is black. Wolverine is 6'3". Stark created Ultron. Galactus is a cloud. Doom is a hacker. Get over it. Just like every other comic book nerd has about every other comic book movie.

          That's completely different. Taking certain liberties to cast a black person for a white FICTIONAL character is different than having a white man play Martin Luther King, Jr., one of the most influential figures in American history. MLK being black is absolutely crucial to American history, and casting a white actor for an MLK role is insulting at best.

          It always seems to cause a problem with focus groups when there's a interracial couple "for no reason". Yeah, despite the fact that 15% of marriages are like this, apparently the whole idea of people falling in love because they aren't all that concerned with a different skin pigment is a hard concept for audiences to grasp.           A black Spider Man could be fine. A black Peter Parker wouldn't. Stan Lee himself even says this: Peter Parker is a long-established character but Spider Man is a title which can change.

          But shoehorning in diversity for the sake of trying to look progressive is cheap and lazy and doesn't take diversity issues seriously.

          Take a look at the new Ms. Marvel. Kamala is a much different character from the previous wearer of that mantle but she has received the necessary character development to make that change work. Because she is such a great new character she has been very well received. Even the most neckbearded white comic book nerds I know have been enjoying her story.

          On the other hand, the new Thor has been suffering from absolutely shit writing that has amounted to nothing but pandering, as such the only people who are really enjoying that are the people who don't care about the story as much as they care about internet fights.

          But honestly, internet fights are the only important thing out there and I look forward to all of the ones that are unfolding in this comment chain. :)

            How come people throw a shit fit when they make white characters black, but no one cares when folks like Ra's Al Ghul, Bane, and or Talia Al Ghul become white? Bane has been established as a Latino who grew up in a prison in Latin America, but for some reason he speaks with an English accent in the Dark Knight Rises. Or I can add the ancient one is now played by a white woman instead of an Asian man. Or I can add that the main villain in Iron man 3 was turned from an Asian man to a white man.

            Its not just the skin color, his entire story has nothing in common. Bane in the comics is a drug dealer who uses super steroids.

            They do quite a bit.... When the white actors are shitty. Nobody seems to care when you're bringing in Liam Fucking Nesson or Tom Hardy. The majority of the world only really heard about the Airbender movie because of the bitchfit thrown over Asian actors.

            The truth is there are not nearly as many high quality minority actors in Hollywood that can pass respectably in an English film. You couldn't cast Jackie Chan into a role without his accent influencing the portrayal. Those that are don't necessarily fall into the category of A) wanting the part, B) being able to play the part and C) being available for it outside of other commitments.

            Almost all the super-heroes we know were created 60 years ago, at a time when black & minorities were absent in the media. Comic Books were product of their time and therefore there wasn't that much diversity back then on their pages. We mostly have inherited white straight male superheroes. Sure, comic books have sometimes been pioneering with showing minorities and better roles for women... But the collective mind isn"t catching up. We still hang ourselves to the first version of the super-heroes.

            If we are allow to take 60's superheroes and put them in 2015, then I think we can also leave the social context of the 60's behind and adapt the super-heroes to today's society.

            We're drowning under super-hero movies, and none of them had black leads (Blade was a decade ago and not as big). I don't understand how people get so upset that a role went to young a black actor. It's already difficult as it is for a black actor to get roles in hollywood, and young super-hero-fan black kids can now have a role model to look for. What is so wrong with that?

            A lot of these of franchise super heroes were made during the height of the segregation era. No ethnic actor would stand a chance at playing a bankable character if content creators weren't allowed/discouraged from deviating. Changing the race of a character who is not primarily defined by their race is really not a big deal. At all. Especially if the actor can play it well. Hell, the difference can be explained in a line or two and the story can just progress from there.

            We'll see if his performance stands on its own or not but even if it doesn't I think we're past the era where "black human torch" is an acceptable annoyance.

              The thing that makes it weird to me is that if they're making the Storm family black, make Susan black as well. Instead, they've kept her white and she'll be adopted. This is an unnecessary departure from source material all because they didn't want to really bite the bullet with changing the race of the characters. It changes the whole relationship dynamic of the team, whereas a change in Sue's race simply wouldn't. I'm sure we'll get banal lip service to that in the movie, where she'll feel disconnected but end up reassured that she's still 'one of the family'.

              There's nothing wrong with diversity but I think it does cause issues when people are left wondering why a comic book created 50 years ago is is suddenly made black but his sister is left white. Why not just go all the way and find an equally talented black actress, especially when the originally white father has also been made black? Or even better, do a film that involves black characters.

              When it comes to the comic book films, the two biggest criticisms with casting come down to why aren't they doing more with women and minorities, but casting a black actor as a white character does nothing to help that cause and when people do bring up the point of having characters stay as true as possible to their comic book selves, people are made to seem racist because of it rather than being able to discuss it (or downvoted to hell on Reddit for saying it).

              Nick Fury is a bad example because Ultimate Nick Fury is black, and was designed to look like Samuel L. Jackson years before the first Iron Man film. They couldn't have picked a better actor for the role of a black Nicky Fury.

              Idris Elba on the other hand, white character played by a black actor, but I don't think anyone cared because A: It's Idris Elba, and B: The comic book character isn't as well known to mainstream audiences. Same thing happened with Michael Clarke Duncan as the Kingpin. People weren't too happy the race was being changed but he really fit the role well with his physical build. He was a great choice.

                  My biggest problem with the first F4 movie is that the characters aren't likable. You have captain fantastic who keeps being rude to Victor who spends a ton of money on his research. You have Sue Storm who is through the entire film is horrible to Victor and basically cheats on him with rubberman. The Thing is ok, untill he completely destroys the Torchs lambogini for calling him names. I guess future captain america is the only one who is actually semi-good out of the gang as he wants to use his superpowers to help people (+fame).

                  The good guy for half of the first film is von Doom, and everyone seems to hate him for no reason. Then he suddenly goes mad and starts killing people. So now he's a bad guy. It doesn't excuse how people acted towards him at the start.

However, I'll play devil's advocate for Ben. He was still trying to get used to being the Thing, so name-calling was not the best way to joke with a friend who just went through a massive (heh) physical change.

                  I highly doubt that. At least the original attempted to capture the tone of the comics. The new one is meant to be a "gritty, edgy, reboot" according to the director and he worked very hard over the production of this film to alienate and literally insult any remaining fans the franchise has had. I'm guessing it will be in the mid to low 20s on Rotten Tomatoes.

                    It's a good movie inside of a horrible one. All of the fluff scenes were the worst, but the few scenes where it got serious where Reed is actually doing work and thinking, and the interactions with the Silver Surfer, it was like a mini movie dispersed throughout a terrible one.
