Bitcoin is the currency of the Internet: a distributed, worldwide, decentralized digital money. Unlike traditional currencies such as dollars, bitcoins are issued and managed without any central authority whatsoever: there is no government, company, or bank in charge of Bitcoin. As such, it is more resistant to wild inflation and corrupt banks. With Bitcoin, you can be your own bank.

Community guidelines

  • Do not use URL shortening services: always submit the real link.
  • Begging/asking for bitcoins is absolutely not allowed, no matter how badly you need the bitcoins. Only requests for donations to large, recognized charities are allowed, and only if there is good reason to believe that the person accepting bitcoins on behalf of the charity is trustworthy.
  • News articles that do not contain the word "Bitcoin" are usually off-topic. This subreddit is not about general financial news.
  • Submissions that are mostly about some other cryptocurrency belong elsewhere. For example, /r/CryptoCurrency is a good place to discuss all cryptocurrencies.
  • No referral links in submissions.
  • No compilations of free Bitcoin sites.
  • Trades should usually not be advertised here. For example, submissions like "Buying 100 BTC" or "Selling my computer for bitcoins" do not belong here. /r/Bitcoin is primarily for news and discussion.
  • Please avoid repetition — /r/bitcoin is a subreddit devoted to new information and discussion about Bitcoin and its ecosystem. New merchants are welcome to announce their services for Bitcoin, but after those have been announced they are no longer news and should not be re-posted. Aside from new merchant announcements, those interested in advertising to our audience should consider Reddit's self-serve advertising system.
  • No wallet addresses in posts/comments. The tipbot can be used.

Download Bitcoin Core

Bitcoin Core is the the backbone of the Bitcoin network. Almost all Bitcoin wallets rely on Bitcoin Core in one way or another. If you have a fairly powerful computer that is almost always online, you can help the network by running Bitcoin Core. You can also use Bitcoin Core as a very secure Bitcoin wallet.

We previously collected donations to fund Bitcoin advertising efforts, but we no longer accept donations. The funds already donated will be spent on some sort of advertising, as intended. (10.35799117 BTC spent so far.)

No problem. We won't show you that ad again. Why didn't you like it?
Oops! I didn't mean to do this.

18 months of downward price pressure has not been fun.
Agreed.
Their first impression could very well have turned them off permanently.
Disagree on this. This would be akin to someone having trouble with email back in 1999 and still to this day, refusing to have an email address because a few emails were lost or never made it to the recipient. I can't imagine anyone today not using email because of 'an experience' they had with the tech ten years ago.
If we keep the long-term perspective in mind and consider the benefits the technology offers (decentralized, trustless record keeping and open, secure ledger), it's safe to say it'll have a role to play in the digital infrastructure of the future.
Price is certainly important, but I look at it like this... if Bitcoin were a human female, price is her level of physical attractiveness... she's still developing and right now she's learning about the world, developing intellectual and social skills, figuring out her creative talents... some of us can already see how beautiful and smart she is, but that's because we've taken an active interest in getting to know her. As she get's older, more people are going to notice she's attractive and start showing more interest in her, but for now, she's not on their radar. For those watching her grow up, we already know she's going to be a heart breaker, and thankfully there are tons of bright minds making sure she'll have the brains to match.

so current bitcoin users are like pedophiles?

Haha. I used 'human female' thinking that might sound a tad bit better... but it doesn't.

Kek, the earlier you got in the better.

Again another 'Email vs Bitcoin' comparison, keep in mind that not all technology become successful, many of them has failed to achieve mass adoption.
Email protocol is now successful technology just because we have centralized but convenient email services like Gmail built on top of that, nobody care about centralization in email services. Bitcoin is another story, centralization is serious problem because it would kill the purpose of its existence. Those easy-to-use centralized services like Coinbase undermine the trustlessness and decentralization, which are the most important characteristics of Bitcoin. Self-management of wallets and private keys is beyond technology acknowledgement of most people.

Agree on the email front, however struggling with a new form of communication is different psychologically than losing capital...

I once misplaced $1000. Didn't permanently stop me from using USD.

Thats terrible. So... Kiddie touchers at first, and eventually we turn away from the old hag?
