Why do you collect silver? (self.Silverbugs)

So I discovered Silverbugs last week and asked what is thought by the subreddit members to be best to collect. I myself collect Mercury dimes and Walking Liberty Half Dollars because they're of small value relatively speaking and are very unlikely to be counterfeit. I collect them because I think at some point that the economy will collapse and I might need to them barter with. Plus, I actually have them, unlike other rehypothecated things. Some of my friends think I'm an idiot, that there will be no collapse, ever, and I'm wasting my time especially since silver has been falling for the last few years.

So I am wondering why most Silverbugs collect silver in whatever form they do. For the collapse, for fun, for an investment, for what? Thank you for your responses.

I'm in my mid 20's and have been stacking/collecting for a little over a year. I love the different designs and older silver when rounds and bars were made and given away for just about everything.

It also give me a way of spending money on money which turns into a savings as I don't like to sell much of what I buy. So for me it's a collection/investment along with a way to save money.

I'm 25 and I see the same way. I'm going to spend my money, why not spend it on something that has upside price potential???

Also my inner child loves having a treasure chest of silver and gold :)

Investing is a part of it but even if the stuff becomes worthless (having zero survival benefits minus silver to a small degree) I would still keep it.

It's part of my diversification plan for my portfolio. It's a few percent of what I have invested. Plus, I just love the stuff, always have.

Legacy for my kids and fun for me in the mean time. I mostly do .999 stuff but then there is the fun stuff. I see it as a conversion of one form of money to another and it is fun to hoard. I like all the different coins and bars and designs from all over. I don't know, I guess I am a pretty typical collector/hoarder/stacker/whatever.

Because I collected it as a kid and ended up with around 50-60 ounces when it peaked above $40 an ounce. I sold it for a nice surprise of extra money.

Now I have a similar stack and will wait until I need to sell it again for hopefully some profit.

I just got into the game in February and the highest I've personally seen spot price is ~$17.47. With it so low currently I'm backing up the truck fairly regularly each paycheck and looking forward to the eventual surge back up.

I just love silver, most of mine is stuff such as old currency, spoons, rings etc. I have around 100 troy ounces. It is mostly because I will spend the money anyway.

I've known forever that our government has been devaluing our currency (I'm an old guy) and it just recently got me really pissed off at the entire scam.

I look at our change and what its made of and compare it to old junk silver, and I can't stop raging at the mother fuckers with the power to siphon out the good stuff and leave us with shit pot metal.

I think about the paper money they've printed in colors that mimic monopoly money and think "those dirty mother fuckers are laughing about their scam in our face".

I'm done with fiat until the government starts backing its currency with silver again. Until then, I'm stacking gold/silver/bitcoin.

I have similar thoughts. After much reading of historical events I've realized that the majority of people, across different nations, will migrate from one currency to another currency regardless of gold/silver backing or fiat.

In other words, when the USD confidence game ends, people will move to another fiat currency. Morevover, there will likely be a short time span but massive deflationary period where the monopoly money will buy many tangible goods followed by inflation and then hyperinflation. Timing and exit strategy will be critical.

More critical than someone like myself can risk to hit on timing. Therefore, gold and silver are a wealth savings account, almost a USD hedge.

And a big FU to the banking elite.

I really want to get into bitcoin, I understand the blockchain and the algorithm and how the process of creating it goes, but how can i securely store it for 5+ years? I don't want to use an escrow or third party storage, I want it.

I do not collect silver. I save in it (and gold). After decades of being in the stock market and bonds, I've decided to transfer the majority of my modest wealth into gold and silver. I do think the financial system is in a very precarious position and I also think that these assets will return excellent value in the coming decades.

The data shows that the stock market has a much higher yield. I'm obviously not going to tell you to do with your money. Just stating that investing strictly in PMS is widely not recommended for others reading your post. I think the consensus is somewhere around 10-15%ish of what you have invested into PMs.

I was in the stock market for 25 years. I have plenty of experience with it. And I've decided to mostly get out of it (as well as bonds) and stay in hard assets. I sleep better and I'm comfortable with my decision.

Liberal here, and I love PM's. In fact, other than our love for PM's just reading some of the comments made by most here, I would say that socially most of us probably lean a little to the left, while financially/economically we probably mostly lean to the right. Just an observation. I may be way off base, but that is the feel I get from this sub for the most part.

I think this is less stackers in general, and more people-of-internet-using-age in general. The young adult to middle-aged generation seems to have a really wide libertarian streak.

As a young steadfast conservative, this worries me a little a lot.

I'm not sure why you chose to read my profile, but I'm fine with the fact that you did. I don't know that what I wrote in my post today, "at some point", constitutes that I believe there's an "impending collapse", "impending" meaning that it will happen soon. I am certain that I did not write anything about Jews in today's post either, I certainly didn't write that they are pulling any strings, and I'm not sure exactly why you think I'm "extreme". Please elaborate.

Jews make up about 2.2% of the US population. Their numbers in the financial industries and media of all kinds, especially at higher management levels, are much greater than 2.2%. AIPAC has more than 100,000 members and is considered to be the most powerful lobby in Washington, DC. The three most recent heads of the Federal Reserve System are Jews. Do I believe that Jews have an inordinate amount of control over what happens in the US? Yes.

I'm not sure where you get that idea. The people I know that are big time stock holders generally vote republican. I don't think Wall Street is especially known for their liberal ideas.
