I've never heard of Amelia Dyer, but I don't think anyone deserved what they got more than her.

Wikipedia

400 estimated murders. Holy shit.

How was there not a connection made sooner?? How big was the town that no one noticed? Was she a traveling infanticide act or something? How do you trust a face like that?

It was the Victorian age, she took in women that seemingly didn't have another choice but to let her help them through pregnancy and delivery in exchange for her 'adopting' their children. No real hospital records of the births, therefore no real record of the human lives she took

There were connections made because she had death certificates made from seemingly the same doctor for a time. She served 6 months of hard labor for neglect. After that, she got out and began doing the same shit, but began disposing on them herself so there was no evidence. I guess she moved frequently to retain anonymity.

You don't have to go very far back in history before you find out how barbaric things were. Especially when you look at the medical profession.

Just look over wikipedia page. All you had to do was move to another town and you could start over from scratch. There was essentially no way to research who someone was.

It's like they didn't bother to check her wikipedia before hiring her.

They could have at least done a search on one of those old-timey sites like AskJeeves.

That's nothing. The same Wikipedia article explains that soing that shit was common practice.

"Amelia was apparently keen to make money from baby farming"

Like it was a true occupation.

"Dyer at one point drank two bottles of laudanum in a serious suicide attempt, but her long-term abuse had built up her tolerance to opium products, so she survived."

Wow.

Yeah, that's the one that made me go searching on wikipedia too. That's fucking crazy.

Same here. I'd like to see if there's a spike in traffic on that page for today haha.

I'm pretty sure that's a given for anything that hits the frontpage.

Godfrey's Cordial—known colloquially as "Mother's Friend", (a syrup containing opium)[6]—was a frequent choice, but there were several other similar preparations.

If I ever make an RPG remind me to include a medicine item called "Godfrey's Cordial" because that is a really cool name

I can't believe they didn't give him his Spaghetti'Os those bastards.

Sounds like a miscommunication. Fucking Spaghetti-O's are cheap as hell: why would you bother making the guy actual spaghetti when all he wants is some canned crap?

sweet fucking god you're the first person I've ever seen call them Lenny faces. now i can finally use them just by googling. i was googling "suggestive face emoticon" and all kinds of other shit. thank you so much

I remember him just replying to me like "What is your favorite food and why is it spaghetti" to which I replied "it isn't" and he started giving me facts about spaghetti anyway.

Likely because the prison kitchen had spaghetti, but not Spagetti-Os.

Some people have gotten McDonald's for their last meal though.

You should be careful when choosing the State that executes you.

I know that they are the scum of the earth and all... But that's some pretty shitty shit. You're already going to execute the man, why make it cruel? Edit Why not give them a $50 budget or something? Or allow family to prepare a meal?

Even if it costs like $500 for the last meal... it costs what, like at least $1 million to execute them? Just give them their last fucking meal...

McDonald's is drive through. You have to actually walk into a store to get Spaghetti O's. Too much effort.

because fuck him, that's why. he's going to die anyway :D let's give him this good shit.

What a rotten day. First they fuck up my meal. Then they execute me!

Everything sounds more meaningful concluded with "I want the press to know this.”

"I've masturbated three times today. I want the press to know this."

Huh, you're right.

I mean, I know we're joking here, but really. Imagine being on death row. You have no life to speak of, and you KNOW you're going to die, and you know when you're going to die, and the only thing you have to look "forward" to in life is no longer having one, and your last meal.

And you just want spaghettios. A familiar flavor that's always the same.

And they give you spaghetti. Which tastes different each time someone cooks it no matter who they are.

I'm a little sad just thinking about it. I think I'd be devastated, truly. I want spaghettios like mom used to give me...not spaghetti that doesn't taste like hers, or my grandma's, or the ladies at the church events, or the buffet, or olive garden, but some random flavor of pasta and sauce. I wanted something I knew and enjoyed, one last time before I died.

It's heartbreaking!

Dude strangled a harmless grandmother with her own christmas lights for 8 bucks, if that makes you less sad about it.

Sick fuck. Use someone elses Christmas lights!

8 dollars is kind of expensive for christmas lights I'd be mad too

And then we injected him with a lethal dose of death. I think we got a fair trade.

The problem is we were supposed to be the ones who, despite killing people, still treat them humanely and kindly on their way out. Yes, he's a murderer, but he's still a human. Spaghetti-O's is obviously not the best example of this, but they honestly wasted money by giving him the wrong meal, which actually takes time and effort to cook, rather than making the easy-as-fuck and cheap-as-fuck canned crap that he specifically requested.

I get ya.. But it wasn't like he just had a few pieces of plain spaghetti...

"His last meal was two dozen steamed mussels, two dozen steamed clams (flavored by a wedge of lemon), a double cheeseburger from Burger King, a half-dozen barbecued spare ribs, two strawberry milkshakes, one-half of a pumpkin pie with whipped cream, diced strawberries, and a 16-ounce can of spaghetti with meatballs, served at room temperature."

If you make yourself severely ill from over-eating to the point you need medical care (is this possible? I don't know), wiil they delay the execution?

As much as I feel like I'd want to be vengeful and ask for a shit ton of ice cream since I'm lactose intolerant and that would make me violently ill (e.g. Potentially very messy), I think I'd rather just have a giant platter of biscuits with sausage gravy and some crispy hashbrowns with Tapatio on top. Washed down with an ice cold real-sugar Coke. And a California burrito if I'm wanting to go all out.

[–]The_Second_Scooter 3ポイント4ポイント  (0子コメント)

I suppose they could if it necessitated it. But I think at that point most people are probably ready to just get on with it.

Fun fact: There usually isn't a budget for last meals served to people on death row so a lot of people don't get their wishes filled. Usually their family or depending on the inmate even guards will go out and spend their own money to get the food for these inmates.

I learned that on a prison tour when I was a kid, you can call me out if you want I have no source...

this struck me as tragic too

“I did not get my Spaghetti-O's, I got spaghetti. I want the press to know this.”

we hear you. we hear you. this injustice will not be forgotten.

In many places the last meal isn't actually "whatever you want". It's "whatever you want from the normal stuff we serve at the prison cafeteria".

If there are any requests that aren't available, they substitute whatever is available that is similar. Some states don't even do the "last meal" any more, and some have strict restrictions on it.

I'm not going to look it up but if I recall correctly, he got everything he asked for, which was a large meal with several different things, except for spaghetti-os.

Dude has the Colin Farrell look from season 2 of True Detective.

Checks out: Bogus Journey was released nine months before his execution. So whether he knew it or it was just a weird coincidence, the man's last words were in fact a quote from the sequel to a movie about Keanu Reeves traveling through time to complete a history project to save his mediocre rock band.

I'm surprised so many got the death penalty for only having one victim.

Especially the Vietnam vet that got a Purple Heart while on death row. Only one victim, but he got the death penalty. His last words make it kinda sad.

Even more interesting he was killed the day after his birthday. He refused his last meal which would have been given to him ON his birthday and asked that the $50 that would have been spent on his last meal be donated to a homeless shelter for veterans like himself.

He maintained until his death that the injuries from the war had caused him PTSD and an array of other issues. It was not just one murder he committed but he went on a crazy spree of sexual assault, robberies and vandalism. Which essentially is very much in line with the idea of a mental break.

He is one of only 13 people to be executed in California since the death penalty was reinstated in 1976.

Its crazy to think how many people that were executed that just needed a bit of mental health care or treatment and they may have never gone down that road. I wish the US did more for mental health, it's a huge issue that causes alot of social problems that no one is willing to talk about.

Eileen Wuornos was notoriously insane. Old interviews with her show that she was completely schizo. She used to talk about things like how the government was using "sonic pressure" to manipulate her mind.

Given her quote and picture, I think she needed psychological help. Maybe an evaluation before prison would have helped?

They did evaluate her. I forgot the little details but long story short, they took her in to check for psychological problems during her trial. The test lasted an absurdly short amount of time and they deemed her completely healthy.

As far as the last words of people being executed, Marie Antoinette's are my favorite. On her way to the guillotine, she accidentally stepped on the executioners foot.

Her last words were, “Pardonnez-moi, monsieur.”

Actually, it was "Pardonnez-moi, monsieur. Je ne l'ai pas fait exprès." That means "Pardon me, sir. I did not do it on purpose."

(Sorry, Marie Antoinette nerd here.)

That takes the Cake.

[–]Swankified_Tristan 23ポイント24ポイント  (5子コメント)

Now let them eat it!

The quote "Let them eat cake" attributed to Marie Antoinette, even though there is no evidence she said this, is made to seem like she was a cold heartless bitch to the French people who were starving and didn't have bread to eat. The most likely explanation for the saying though was that she was so oblivious to the situation at hand in the country and entitled since childhood, she simply meant the saying as well if they don't have bread why can't they just eat cake then. Cake in this instance means brioche, a pastry made from egg and butter, as opposed to simple bread of flour, yeast, and water. Here is the wikipedia on the subject

damn, the person who wrote the Wikipedia article for Marie Antoinettes death is seriously shit at writing

edit: "The queen will spends hours trying to see a glimpse from her son from her barred windows or to hear his voice; the boy was completely turned against his family accusing them of all sort of bad stuff; on one occasion he asked why his family was still living and not executed. "

that's literally what the Wikipedia article says

Go fix it. It's all done by volunteers.

It'll be reverted in an hour or two because there's some wiki editor who slaved away at their keyboard for hours to produce this masterpiece and any change would ruin it.

I sincerely doubt that's the attitude that Wikipedia editors have.

You'd be surprised. A lot of wiki power users are very defensive about their pages. I've seen edits that are literally fixing spelling errors get reverted and reported as vandalism.

I guess I'll have to go deeper into Wikipedia to really confirm this stuff. Maybe I'm just lucky in that I don't research the stuff that defensive people have edited the articles for?

I once edited a page to remove spoilers about a show (the page was unrelated to said show) and it was reverted without explanation .-.

"Once Monohan opened the door for Graham, the three men burst in. The gang demanded money and the jewels from Monohan, but she refused to give them anything. At this point, Barbara reportedly pistol-whipped Monohan, cracking her skull. They then suffocated her with a pillow."

i wonder what the thing with the "i forgive you," is? is it a denial of guilt or are they calling the death penalty murder? sometimes a sometimes b? a little of both?

The death penalty is murder. They're saying "I forgive you" because in their own eyes, perhaps they've done nothing wrong. Perhaps the crimes they committed were deemed necessary by their own moral standards. In the end, they would forgive the people who (from their perspective) were the ones who were punishing them for something they knew wasn't wrong. Even if that's wrong, killing them for what they've done is horrible either way. And they are forgiving them. Because in the last moments, you probably think about a lot and just calm down and say your goodbyes.

Hell, he may even just be innocent. There's a lot of missing information on his little bio. Don't even know how his supposed victim died?

That was my thought too, maybe this was a case of being wrongfully accused, or being setup. Possibly he was put to death but was innocent.

Note: I know nothing about the case, just my thought process after seeing his quote.

Manuel Pina "Manny" Babbitt (May 3, 1949 – May 4, 1999) was a U.S. Marine veteran of the Vietnam War who was convicted of the murder of a 78-year-old woman, Leah Schendel, during a burglary in Sacramento, California in 1980. He was executed by the state of California by lethal injection at San Quentin State Prison, one day after his 50th birthday. The murder was committed during a string of robberies and burglaries and the day after the murder Babbitt committed at least one sexual assault.

Babbitt had been wounded at the bloody 1968 Battle of Khe Sanh in Quang Tri Province, South Vietnam. As part of his defense, he claimed that he suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder, which he said caused him to commit his crimes and, later, to lose all memory of it.

One year before his execution, while on death row, Babbitt was awarded a Purple Heart medal for the wounds he had received at the Battle of Khe Sanh.

Babbitt refused his last meal and asked that the $50 allotted be given to homeless Vietnam veterans. His last words were: "I forgive all of you." He was buried in Wareham, Massachusetts, on May 10, 1999, with full military honors.

That whole story is just fucking sad. It reads as if the military knew he was a broken man and in their own way apologized for it with the medal and military burial. It's like a man having to put down his own killer dog.

Yeah, the military can really fucking break you. Hell he even refused the metal and donated the money to the veterans. Not saying his actions were justifiable or anything but still, it just seems like a case of what war and PTSD can do to someone really.

The death penalty is homicide. Murder is specifically unlawful.

I mean probably a wry reference to the idea that they're murdering him as a response to the murders he committed. So he's forgiving them for murdering him in retributive savage cold blood. Which is pretty nice of him.

"Y'all are hypocrites" just doesn't have the same ring.

I feel like also since he was a Vietnam Vet, he might have felt like society fucked him over big time, so I read it as that, but damn, that's freaky still

Well, considering that there has to have been at least one wrongful execution of someone that was totally innocent...you never know.

Some of them mentioned God when they said "I forgive you". In the Christian religion Jesus says something like "unless you forgive all who wronged you, neither will the Lord forgive you for your wrong doings."

My guess is while on death row they became more religious, therefore forgiving other people so they can be forgiven for what put them there in the first place.

I think it's just a madman's way of messing with you after death...he or she knows people will think about it long after. Kind of a minor victory for them.

We all dance with the grim reaper

Look, it rhymes, so it makes it deep: "You can be a king or a street sweeper, we all dance with the grim reaper."

Just like the old adage, "You can be a king or do a street boogie, we all dance with the space wookiee."

Why is everyone on this website so fucking cynical? Stop being so jaded and live a little. Those are powerful words.

Dude. It's a quote from Bill and Ted's. He might as well said "Totally bogus."

Only losers are receptive to the poetry in the inherent foibles of the human condition. Go back to reading La bête humaine, nerd!

Right. So this was all a big buildup to a Bethie Correia joke. Nice.

The answer to Peter Kurten: No. Being decapitated means a sudden loss of blood pressure, which will shut off conscious thought (regardless of whether there's oxygen in the brain). The trauma to nerves in the severed neck mean a blinding flash of light and a roar of sound.

Basically, you walk up, hear the blade fall, and then there's a brief moment of complete disorientation. You register that you're beginning to fall but you can't see or hear anything and before you can process any of that everything goes red and dark and you pass out inside of a second. Your brain has oxygen in it for a while more, and your face may make involuntary motions, but conscious thought is impossible and brain death occurs a few minutes later.

Robert Alton Harris quoting Bill and Teds Bogus Journey as his last words is pretty awesome. He got it wrong though - "You might be a king or a little street sweeper, but sooner or later you dance with the reaper."

That last one, she had it coming but I kinda feel bad for her. She commited the crime but wasnt ready for the time.

William Bonin's comment makes him seem insightful and perhaps remorseful or reformed (meh... maybe if his kill count wasn't so high).

Mario Benjamin Murphy looks like G. Love.

William Bonin- what does it mean his crime was mayhem?

There's actually a really interesting documentary about Aileen Wuornos called Life and Death of a Serial Killer. She definitely seemed crazy however after the movie I felt sympathetic to her position.
