Today I was cashiering. I had a lady come in who apparently had been in last week to buy a backpack. And no supplies. She comes in today and buys a cartload of supplies (about 60 items if I remember correctly).... and no backpack.

Tells me that another associate last week told her that since she was buying a backpack at the time and we had the "25% off supplies when you buy a backpack" deal running then, that if she came in later and bought supplies we would honor that coupon and give her 25% off her supplies.

First of all, that's not even a little bit how that deal works, logically speaking. Plus, the system won't even take, because the coupon won't work unless there is a backpack in the purchase. So I figured she was lying, and I called over a manager to help back me up on this.

GM comes over. Customer pulls out receipt from last week from her purse. Shows GM a note @ the top of the receipt. Sure enough, one of our associates had written (and signed) a note saying we would honor that. GM and I both recognized the associate's signature, so GM tells me to honor it by using price-modify. I spent 45 extra minutes with this lady after ringing her up, going through and individually price-modifying each and every item on her list to take off 25%. (mind you, after price modifying each item, register has to take the time to refresh/update the entire transaction).

I was on main register, and during my 5.5 hour shift I think I was with this customer for more than an hour. What? I just... WHAT?!

...Why not "return" the backpack to get it into today's transaction, and have the GM override the coupon so it'll work outside its valid date?

Our courtesy coupons?

yeah, exactly. I honestly can't believe I didn't think of that myself in the 45 minutes I spent overriding everything. I didn't think of it till I got home.

Happens. One time I was helping a lady with a deal and ended up not being able to get a hold of her to get a credit card number until after a deal expired for 20% off and had to price match 48 individual shirts in as400. And because it was on create.staples instead of print, I had to force each shirt through one at a time through the back end because the creator for that site freezes up if you try to add more than one shirt order per project.

So you gave her 25% off EACH item and not 25% off the total?

I'm no math expert (and I don't mean that as in I am a math expert) but doesn't she save more that way? as opposed to 25% off the total?

Also....why would your mgr waste an hour of time on this and not use a couple of the customer satisfaction coupons we have? What ever 25% is of the total, just grab a couple coupons to equal that and use them. WAAAAY quicker and easier than doing what you did.

25% is 25% so... no, it would be the same. And there's no way to give her 25% off the total without a coupon code. coupon code for backpack deal wouldn't work unless she actually bought the backpack today.

I have no friggin idea why GM did it that way. It makes NO sense to me.

In retrospect, what should have happened is we should have just returned the backpack from her original purchase (using sku/upc) and resold so that we could use the coupon code.

ok, math isn't my strong suit, no lie.

Doesn't every store have the satisfaction coupons? For $5, $10 and $20? It's like staples cash, each with a coupon code that takes the dollar amount off the purchase. Could have used one of those.

or yes...simply returned the backpack and rang it with the office supplies.

we do, but I think it's in lockup or cash office. wouldn't be surprised if GM just didn't feel like going to cash office to get it.

my GM should have thought of a lot of other solutions than the one he gave me. I should have thought of some of them, but I didn't. It happens. Insanely frustrating, but it happens.

Jesus 25% off the total yields a diffrent number than 25% each item. To get the number multiply total by .25 that number is how much off they would get from the total. Grab that number and divide it by number of items thats the number you subtract from individual items. All this assuming she got all office supply items.

say she buys 6 of a $2 item.

If you take the 25% off the total:

$2 x 6=$12

.25 x $12 is $3

$12-$3=$9

If you take the 25% off of each individual item:

25% off of $2 would bring that item to $1.50

$1.50 x 6 = $9

she is still paying $9 either way so... no, 25% is 25% is 25% just the same.

there were plenty of others during the rest of the shift. this was just by far the worst. And it's not just about what I personally had to deal with. It's more the fact that GM was willing to honor BS like that even if it meant holding up main register for over an hour.

What OP didn't mention is that it should have been a 5 minute process. The customer had her old receipt. All he had to do was return the backpack and re-ring it under the new order. All the supplies would have been discounted automatically. What's even worse is the GM couldn't figure it out. Typical Staples incompetency and its why their stores will all close sooner than later.
