Happens. One time I was helping a lady with a deal and ended up not being able to get a hold of her to get a credit card number until after a deal expired for 20% off and had to price match 48 individual shirts in as400. And because it was on create.staples instead of print, I had to force each shirt through one at a time through the back end because the creator for that site freezes up if you try to add more than one shirt order per project.

So you gave her 25% off EACH item and not 25% off the total?

I'm no math expert (and I don't mean that as in I am a math expert) but doesn't she save more that way? as opposed to 25% off the total?

Also....why would your mgr waste an hour of time on this and not use a couple of the customer satisfaction coupons we have? What ever 25% is of the total, just grab a couple coupons to equal that and use them. WAAAAY quicker and easier than doing what you did.

25% is 25% so... no, it would be the same. And there's no way to give her 25% off the total without a coupon code. coupon code for backpack deal wouldn't work unless she actually bought the backpack today.

I have no friggin idea why GM did it that way. It makes NO sense to me.

In retrospect, what should have happened is we should have just returned the backpack from her original purchase (using sku/upc) and resold so that we could use the coupon code.

Doesn't every store have the satisfaction coupons? For $5, $10 and $20? It's like staples cash, each with a coupon code that takes the dollar amount off the purchase. Could have used one of those.

Jesus 25% off the total yields a diffrent number than 25% each item. To get the number multiply total by .25 that number is how much off they would get from the total. Grab that number and divide it by number of items thats the number you subtract from individual items. All this assuming she got all office supply items.

say she buys 6 of a $2 item.

If you take the 25% off the total:

$2 x 6=$12

.25 x $12 is $3

$12-$3=$9

If you take the 25% off of each individual item:

25% off of $2 would bring that item to $1.50

$1.50 x 6 = $9

she is still paying $9 either way so... no, 25% is 25% is 25% just the same.

there were plenty of others during the rest of the shift. this was just by far the worst. And it's not just about what I personally had to deal with. It's more the fact that GM was willing to honor BS like that even if it meant holding up main register for over an hour.

What OP didn't mention is that it should have been a 5 minute process. The customer had her old receipt. All he had to do was return the backpack and re-ring it under the new order. All the supplies would have been discounted automatically. What's even worse is the GM couldn't figure it out. Typical Staples incompetency and its why their stores will all close sooner than later.
