Good evening, Steve. Welcome back to Reddit. It's been quite busy day, hasn't it?

Let's cut right to the chase, shall we? Your honeymoon phase will last the length of this post, so enjoy. More importantly, pay attention.

The anti-Pao crusade was about Reddit's health and well-being, not Pao's race or sex. Sure, some cheap shots were taken, and tons of hyperbole was used. Personally, I'm guilty of both. It's difficult damn near impossible, to "remember the human," though, when the human is trying to change Reddit into something that will ultimately fail.

The beautiful thing about Reddit is that it's not Facebook. It's not Twitter. Those two sites are popular and successful, but that doesn't mean we need another of either. Reddit is popular because it allows the human to be human. On Reddit, we're allowed to say what we want, so long as no laws are broken. Of course, that means some unsavory things will be said. Things other sites censor can be found on Reddit, and I believe that's a beautiful thing.

Many people are of the mindset that anything that offends them should be removed. /r/MensRights should be banned because it runs counter to feminism. /r/coontown should be banned because racism is bad. People who say things that are deemed sexist should be banned. /u/davidreiss666, mod of hundreds of subs, would love to scrub anything with which he personally disagrees from Reddit. This is not in keeping with the spirit of Reddit.

Having an open platform is important to a lot of Redditors. We opposed Pao because we had no faith in her ability to run Reddit as an open platform. A new day has dawned, though, a day that finds Pao leaving and you returning. We're here to let you know we want an open platform, not a heavily-censored website that's the darling of online media.

The powermods aired their grievances and demanded better mod tools. They were placated by an empty promise. They never gave a shit about our demands. I doubt they even remember their demands.

Here is what we want:

•We ask that you embrace Reddit's diverse culture rather than cleansing it. We get our touchy-feelies on Facebook. We come to Reddit to be reminded that life can be harsh. We come to Reddit to see hot girls taking off their clothes for nothing more than karma. We come to Reddit to learn, even if what we learn is offensive and ugly.

•We ask that you either officially explain and enforce equally the non-existent brigade rule, or scrub it all together. We're fine either way. If you're going ban someone for using Reddit's key function, the voting arrows, the rules page should be updated to properly explain when you should and shouldn't vote.

•If admins are going to continue to use shadowbans to punish people who run afoul of the rules, a message should automatically be sent explaining the reason for the ban.

•Give mods a chance to get their subs in line before banning the sub. Ignore the demands for a safe-space. If someone is offended by certain subreddits, their only course of action should be not visiting those subs.

•Better mod tools. The powermods my have forgotten their demands, but we haven't.

We hope you do a good job as CEO, but we're going to keep an eye on you. We don't want a repeat of last week, but we're prepared to go that route if we see Reddit moving in the wrong direction. You're responsible now. The buck stops with you now. Since you helped start Reddit, we will try to be positive and give you a chance. Don't mistake our positivity and goodwill for complacency, though. Unlike some, we won't forget.

Where is the part where you ask /u/spez how that containment policy is working out for him?

Speaking of— /u/spez/ how is that containment policy working out for you?

EDIT: Wow that's quite the copypasta

It's quite disturbing how you don't want to see the reality of things.

You're perceived as the worst CEO of reddit. You're perceived as a blockade of safe space. You're perceived as an arrogant man, doing terrific job to setting example for all men in high positions around the globe. Those are the facts, set by media, set by your own community. Open your eyes and stop living in your small, weird world, Mr. Huffman.

YOU'RE NOT ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF HISTORY.

We are.

The best thing you actually know this, deep down inside of you, but pretending it's not true.

God help us all.

[–]American-Negro 5ポイント6ポイント  (3子コメント)

What's the link to /u/spez's containment comment? I keep seeing it referenced but I might have missed the comment.

[–]LysergicDiethylaMan[S] 21ポイント22ポイント  (2子コメント)

Well, here's one.

Basically, /u/spez thinks that racists on reddit are clear cut, and reddit's general userbase is smart enough to spot a racist comment when they see it. The thing about /u/spez, like most privileged white men, is that he doesn't realize how often people from CT astroturf threads. He also doesn't realize that a lot of people who browse this site haven't made up their minds yet about complex social issues, and depend on this site's community for positive reinforcement about their own ideals.

Anyway, I'm not being serious today.

/u/spez how is that containment policy working out for you?

[–]Commander_Ninja 6ポイント7ポイント  (0子コメント)

Does he not realize that these people use reddit as a recruitment too? Preying on young, outcast, confused and vulnerable minds in order to spread their propaganda?

Does /u/spez not understand that his policy is directly harming the majority of users and strengthening the position of those promoting hate? Be it racism, sexism, etc, it doesn't matter. His action is the worst possible one. Its a cowardly one where he can pretend his hands are clean.

[–]asking-dumb-things 6ポイント7ポイント  (1子コメント)

u/spez have you prepared your freeze peaches press release for when the next Dylann Roof is tied to CT or one of the other many hate subs?

Better get crackin' cuz it's just a matter of time now that Reddit is rivaling Stormfront.

[–]LysergicDiethylaMan[S] 4ポイント5ポイント  (0子コメント)

Also, to piggyback on that statement...

/u/spez how is that containment policy working out for you?

[–]Seoul_Surfer 5ポイント6ポイント  (0子コメント)

I wonder how quickly he turned off notifications about his name. If I were an admin, I'd never have it on, no matter which side of this latest flub I was on

When fph was banned, the prevalent response- and one I'm 100% on board with- was that this private company can do whatever it wants and if you don't like it, you can either few deal with it or leave, but whining was the most laughable thing to do.

That remains the case.

[–]BadCompSciMod 49ポイント50ポイント  (52子コメント)

Raising racist subreddits like they're your fucking children can have a real effect on the real world, making raicsts feel like they're free to say whatever. Racism has a real effect on the world (see: dylann storm roof). Banning FPH does nothing like that.

There's a reason hate speech is banned in many countries.

Raising racist subreddits like they're your fucking children can have a real effect on the real world, making raicsts feel like they're free to say whatever

worse yet, it can make them feel legitimated in their views, and send the same message to people impressionable enough to agree.

[–]LysergicDiethylaMan[S] 21ポイント22ポイント  (4子コメント)

I was actually laughing pretty hard when I made this, because I felt super smug and clever.

That remains the case.

I feel less smug about myself because I don't know why "few" is in my post or what I was trying to say. Swype has let me down again.

Would you rather fight 100 duck sized containment policies or one 1 horse sized containment policy?
