Are they ready to persecute him? What kind of evidence do they have? I guess they will need to prove Mark personally did everything and without a mycrimes.txt, that might be difficult.

From what the police said, I understood that there was a manual update of the database, sometime in 2013, that increased his own MtGOX account by 1 million dollars without any corresponding deposit on MtGOX's bank account or any record of a trade with some other customer.

I'm sorry but I'm going to need to see some cryptographic proof on the blockchain that Mark Karpeles did anything wrong. If that cannot be provided, then by the unenforceable laws of the decentralised free market he is an innocent man who did nothing wrong.

The fact that he is alleged to have lost hundreds of millions of dollars and 850,000 bitcoins is nothing other than a government conspiracy to spread FUD over the bitcoin ecosystem.

I've heard the Japanese police don't go forward with arrests like this unless they're really sure of a conviction. They've got an absurd successful prosecution rate.

At this point there is still room for something to come up.

But once charges are filed, he's screwed. Japan's prosecutors don't formally charge people until they're sure of a conviction. They've got a conviction/guilty plea rate of >99%.

The real overlooked tragedy in all this is that with Karpeles in jail, there is no-one who can correctly administer the shots that his cats need.
