IIRC, there was a show in Japan before Obama was even elected, wherein a girl moved to a small town named Obama with her family. Because she was bitter about moving and leaving all her friends and the city behind to move to a small town with nothing to do, she simply hated the town. A running joke was that whenever something bad happened to her (such as falling and spilling her lunch), she would simply blame the town. "Thanks, Obama."

It says "Obama means little beach in Japanese" can someone confirm this?

[–]Audioverstaerker 4ポイント5ポイント  (2子コメント)

小 (お) = little, narrow

浜 (はま) = riverbank, seashore, beach

Pronounced Ohama or Obama. And that 市 just means city, so "little beach city"

[–]joshsg 2ポイント3ポイント  (0子コメント)

For a second there... I was like, oh that's why it was called "Omaha Beach" in WW2. I got the dumb.

[–]ShadowOfTheWasp 1ポイント2ポイント  (1子コメント)

does that mean some Japanese people giggle when they mishear President Little-Beach as President Little-Bitch?

[–]Audioverstaerker 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

No, but they sometimes joke about the word for beach (not the native one, but the one borrowed from english) which is ビーチ and the borrowed word "bitch" which is ビッチ.

The one is pronounced biichi, with a long i and the other is bicchi, with a very short i.

Other than that, the word ohama sounds nothing like 売女, which is pronounced baita IIRC. 売女 is the native word for bitch.

That said, the japanese love to make jokes similiar to what you suggested because their language is full of homonyms and it is perfect for puns.

[–]solidSC 20ポイント21ポイント  (8子コメント)

Ok... So what's the joke?

[–]KoboldCommando 57ポイント58ポイント  (5子コメント)

"Thanks Obama" is a long running joke, tracing back to when people who were anti-Obama used it as a slogan, ironically thanking him for things they blamed him for. Due to propaganda and whatnot, these things were often mostly or entirely unrelated to Obama's actions and influence, so much so that it gave birth to the joke of saying "Thanks, Obama"when literally anything bad happens. The joke's popularity took a huge nose dive when Obama himself referenced it, as is often the case, but it's still around.

This one is particularly fresh since its in Japanese with a presumably Japanese person in the picture, making it even more absurd than usual.

And that's the full /r/outoftheloop version, sorry for ruining the joke by explaining it, thanks Obama.

Where people say 'Thanks Obama' when bad things happen like it was his fault.
