Any idea what causes the older generation to do this? Is it just a side effect of dementia causing egocentrism?

I think they still treat quick messages like things that would take time, such as a phone call or letter. They don't get that this would be better split into two messages. In a phone call or letter, covering different topics would be totally reasonable to them.

That does make more sense. I've just got to deal with a lot of elderly citizens on a daily basis, and what I've noticed is an extreme preference to talk about themselves. I can sit there and nod, and they'll never ask a question about me through the whole 'conversation.'

I suppose it's kind of a child-like recession. Like how little kids just keep talking and talking and don't realize the other person is bored.

Many older people just have nearly no one to talk to and, I think, sometimes feel that no one cares about them. I imagine the stress of aging and dealing with the associated issues can be hard to cope with.

This, frequently. I have an elderly (and admittedly, crazy) co-worker who works midnights. When I come in mornings she will stay and talk for an hour (sometimes more) past her clock out time. I'm usually not in the mood that early and give her a constant deadpan face for the entire conversation. She repeats and repeats the same stories so I don't have to pay attention anymore.

She doesn't pick up on any body language so it works out. She gets someone to talk to before she goes back to her empty home and I don't have to do any work for the first part of my shift.

"Better put it all in one message so we don't work the internet messager too hard" (to grandma, the messager is actually a boy with a satchel bag)

maybe they like hearing updates from people personally, and assume other people might like this too. who cares, it's less vapid than your typical facebook happy birthday

True, they just do this a lot in person too. I've been trying to understand it so I can keep myself sane through their one-sided conversations.

I think it's because finding that person's page, commenting on it etc is already a big deal for them so they don't want to do it again and just write both things in one message instead of finding the "send private message" etc.

Maybe because long distance communication in the "olden days" was not as simple and easy as today.

Maybe its like a telegram which were written similarly.

Is it just old people? I know a few people in their early twenties who will completely disregard something you say to them and just start talking about whatever they want to talk about

...good point. There's a lot of those in the world too.

I was expecting a reference to the Old Spice commercials.

Sorry, during my blurring job I got both of their names in one solid swipe. Person A posted to Person B's page.
