She got married and had a kid. She is spending time with her family. That is the reason for the long delay of her new album, which is titled 25.

Pharrell, who is working with her on new album, explains: “She’s kinda like, ‘OK, guys, I’m gonna open my diary for 20 minutes.’ So it’s like, OK, you have 20 minutes, or 32 minutes really, then she gives it to you and closes it up and disappears, and she’s off with her beautiful boy — and that’s what it’s all about,”

I knew she wouldn't last long after she got happy.

honestly, where is she going to derive inspiration now??

SOMEONE LIKE YOUUUU

Fun fact: she didn't write that song. It was the dude from Semisonic (had the song 'closing time')

Dude from Semisonic has really been doing well behind the scenes. I think they all have? All three of Semisonic's albums were pretty good, honestly. Wish they'd gotten more hits.

Fun fact: it was written by Adele AND Dan Wilson.

No, it wasn't. That's what it says on paper, but for all intents and purposes he wrote the song himself. I've met the guy a few times and heard him speak about the songwriting process of this song in particular.

I can't speak about this particular case but that is an extremely common practice with pop stars who's marketing focuses on the whole authentic, writes their own songs image.

They have a 'writing partner' who pretty much writes the whole song, they change a few lines of lyrics/melody, get given a writing credit and get to uphold their image.

Also royalties from radio play go mostly to the songwriter, not performer; it's a business tactic as well.

Yep, precisely.

Basically, in case anyone is interested in how this works, every radio station, or live location (think pub, club, stadium, shopping center, hotel...) that plays music, pre-recorded or live, has to have a PRS licence. They pay a certain amaount of money depending on the size of the venue/broadcast and how many people are going to hear it, submit a list of all the songs played there over a year, and then that money gets divided up between all the songwriters.

Historically and I believe currently, although don't quote me on that, performers get nothing. All goes to the songwriter/composer.

Edit: If you are in a band who play origninals it is worth registering yourself with PRS as a songwriter. It costs about £30 for a year (dont know for you guys in the US). All those local small clubs you play at will have a licence, but might be really bad at reporting what songs have been played. Hand in your set list at the end of the gig, and you might be one of a handful of bands to do that throughout the year. Suddenly their £250 Licence isn't getting divided up between very many people at all and you get a decent chunk of it.

That's interesting, I'd never heard that before

I have no idea on what to do with this, I've met the organization (STIM) that collects money in my country (Sweden), but it comes with things I don't agree with.

They're the only choice you have, but they're not government.
Then when I met a representative I found out that if I sign on with them I can't just play my music how I want it or release it for free. I have to ask for permission to be able to put it on a website, but I can't have any commercial activity on it (selling merch).

It makes sense to sign up if you're a big artist, but even so, the contracts are individual and I pretty sure I wouldn't get a good deal as some big name writers.

I think that's why Elvis was added onto a lot of songs as writer

One of the most famous examples of this, with varying legitimacies in the accusations, is Robbie Williams.

Virtually his entire solo output peak has been under the care of Guy Chambers. As soon as Chambers and Williams went their own ways, Williams released the infamously terrible Rudebox. I wouldn't call that totally unethical, because in this example, the collaboration was very public.

Though that is before we get to the infamous bickering about 'Angels'. Written by Ray Heffernan (given £7500 for 100% rights of his song), before being twisted a little and credited totally to 'Chambers/Williams' and allegedly written in one day by Williams after some personal event. Again, it's something that they had every right to do, but it's still rather shady.

However entertaining (and irritating in equal measure) Williams can be, there is obviously far more to the production of his work than him sitting down and writing songs alone.

[–]Zooomz 1

Allegations of that is what started the Drake v Meek Mill feud if you're following it.

http://www.vox.com/2015/7/31/9078257/drake-meek-beef

It's a little more complicated in rap where authenticity is linked to writing your own songs. And interesting when you realize Drake himself has written songs for plenty of people.

Yeah, I met a producer that "co-wrote" a song with a celebrity.
He wasn't very happy about it, but hey, he got paid.

He said he flew to London to write a song with her:
~She was a fucking cunt, I had already written the song, but I pretended writing it on the spot. I tried to involve her in the process but she sat there reading a beatuy-magazine not even talking, and I ask her if it sounds good, etc. She doesn't even look at me but says that she'll let me know if she thinks it sounds bad.

And in the end, she has writing credits..

Which celebrity was this?

Mjeeeh, it was a long time ago, but don't want to screw either her or the producer. I misremembered though, she glanzed over the paper and said in rude voice "I'll tell you if I think it sounds bad". Well, that's at least according to him, I think that was part of his annoyance.

So I'm not saying who it is, but she has a music career and she was in the Dead or Alive (videogame) movie..

Please OP, who was it? Or at least link the song

I honestly can't stand Adele whenever I hear her come on the radio I get super pissed and I get a huge headache I'm not to sure why.

You imagine this goes on with her?

Pretty sure that's rhianna.

For me 10 years ago, that was any Kelly Clarkson song.

Meh, different strokes for different folks. I can understand when people say that she wouldn't have been as popular if Amy Winehouse hadn't gone to the Great Rehab in the Sky, but I still think she's got an amazing set of pipes and will gladly listen to her when she comes on the radio.

Nickelback is the group that gives me headaches. I liked their first song, actually, but I hated their next 17 songs which were just the first song again, re-packaged.

Agreed. When I was growing up, my dad had a clock radio, and for the longest fucking time ever that was all the radio stations played in the mornings when I woke up.

Soooo annoying to hear first thing in the morning, every morning.

Sounds like "We Built This City On Rock And Roll" or "Caribbean Queen" 30 years ago.

Your comment reminds me of the first verse of Amber Rubarth's "Song to Thank the Stars":

I've put the pen to paper a hundred times before, / I've written songs about broken-heartedness, songs about the war, / I know exactly what to write when I'm in tears, / I don't know what to write, when you're still here.

She was also signed on to do the title track for the next 3 Bond films, so we will see more of her yet.

She did a great job with Skyfall, but I always liked hearing different artists have their take on the Bond theme with each new movie.

I think they're trying to bring it back to the Shirley Bassey days when she was signed to sing the Bond themes.

Bassey only did 3 and they were non-consecutive, just everyone remembers Goldfinger.

[–]chilaxinmanWhat the hell happened here?

I loved Chris Cornell's song "You Know My Name". It was perfect for Casino Royale and immediately made me excited for the reboots.

Plus...you know...Chris Cornell.

It's going back a bit but I really love The World Is Not Enough by Garbage. It's one of my favorite themes.

Did not like the movie, loved the song.

It is a great Bond song and it always seems to get overlooked.

fuck yeah, dude! best bond theme ever!

I think the Cornell song is probably my favorite of all the Bond themes, and here's why. All the other themes somewhat "defined" the particular movie that they were made for. But "You Know My Name" was the first theme that, to me at least, defined James Bond. That, and it had that current hard rock sound, blended with the old school John Barry horn section riffs.

Just went and looked the song up. Holy shit those verses have the most interesting flow! The chorus isn't amazing, it's acceptable, but definitely outshined (lol) by those verses, which is a rarity in music.

Radiohead are rumored to be writing the Spectre theme.

One of the biggest betting shops in the UK has suspended betting on who will do the next Bond theme after someone tried to put £10k on it being Radiohead. "Nobody bets £10k on a hunch" said a company spokesman. So don't assume it will be Adele.

I mean, if I had money to burn and was willing to take the plunge...

I'm still salty they didn't use Muse's "Supremacy" on Skyfall. IIRC it was originally supposed to be the title track.

Do you have a source for this? I follow Bond news pretty closely and haven't seen this yet.

I tried to find it, but can't pin down the source I read at the time. It was something they said shortly after Skyfall. Although i am reading some reports that say she declined for SPECTRE and others say that she did do it... so i don't l know

I heard on Sirius that Sam smith was signed on to do spectre a few months ago but he had to get throat surgery, and they were considering Muse and Adele again if he couldn't finish it

Craig is only contracted for one more Bond after SPECTRE. Beyond that is anyone's guess.

I thought they change the artist with every bond movie?

As I understand it she basically wanted to spend more time with her family.

On top of the wanted to spend time with her family she also damaged her vocal chords quite badly but I can't remember how long ago that way

Yes she did. At one point doctors feared she would even have trouble speaking in the future if she continued to sing and tour the way she had. Vocal rehab can only go so far if you have shitty vocal fold genetics/inadequate singing technique. Stop singing all the time, or lose the ability to phonate clearly. Easy choice.

As I listen to her "live" recordings (recordings that are going to be the most honest when it comes to her methods of vocal production) in her middle voice, there always seems to be this constant hiss of breath...like a tire with a slight hole letting out extra air constantly. Whereas in her higher tones, the notes almost sound suffocated...a lack of air between the folds during phonation. The higher tones don't sound forced, exactly...but it's as if she's not allowing the air to easily allow for those tones. These types of conditions during phonation can often lead to vocal nodes and nodules.

In vocal phonation...there's a principle called the Bernoulli effect. It's how planes fly. It also contributes to healthy vocal phonation: adequate air. ELI5: when the amount of air becomes too small or too great, shit gets fucked up. Adele kind of fucked up her voice, and I'm sure doctors have reinforced to her that from now on she has to be very careful because she could get a vocal node and lose the ability to phonate clearly, which would suck.

Edit: a word.

Are there any well known cases where singers have gone mute?

I don't know about going mute. But Julie Andrews had to have surgery to remove non-cancerous nodules from her throat, and she lost her singing voice permanently because of it. She can still act and talk. Just not sing.

I did not know that, and now I'm sad.

That is why it was poignant when Julie Andrews thanks Lady GaGA for singing "The Sound of Music" at 2015 Oscars.

I really think Lady Gaga did a wonderful job with this. I have to say I thought she was a strange choice, and i thought she would trash the classic songs, but she sang so beautifully. I did not know she was capable of performing like this.

She was classically trained growing up. I can imagine all those looks on people's faces when they saw her live.

She's one of the big pop stars who can actually sing and doesn't need (not that I really care about it) computer enhancement and aid

That is why she was the perfect choice. Very few people knew she sang jazz and had the chops to pull it off. People mostly knew her pop songs and the meat dress. They were all pre-cringing before she sang her first note. Then she killed it.

I read something about how Steven Sondheim hated it and I got really sad. I thought it was a beautiful performance.

he probably hated it 'cuz her acting was god-awful, even if she sang it well. he's a big fan of good acting, that one.

And when she did "talk singing" in Princess Diaries 2. Her first time "singing" on screen since that horrible botched surgery.https://youtu.be/6dEKS4lMTfs

She did not lose her singing voice. The functions of speaking and singing do not require different mechanics of the larynx.

The surgery reduced her range, for which she was known.

So, she lost the very faculty for which her voice was known and loved, and can mever do it again, you say.

She lost her singing voice.

She lost enough functionality to essentially end her career. Incidentally, the surgery she had is pretty much no longer done. They have hugely advanced vocal fold microsurgery in the last decade.

John Mayer recently got nodes I think. Also Sam Smith, that guy who sings "Stay With Me", just got out of vocal rehab and is working on his new album. He had badly damaged his pretty bad though.

Vocal rehab. I imagine a group of singers in a circle whispering "I cant stop singing".

Except whispering is a huge no-no on voice rest!

I've heard this a bunch but why is that?

For most people, whispering involves more laryngeal tension than speaking.

The current wisdom is that modified voice rest (not total silence) is ideal for most rehab. This generally means speaking in a light, breathy tone, for no more than about ten minutes per hour, and only in quiet environments.

Here's a pretty good article (sorry my link is on mobile), that should give you the details without overwhelming you in voice science.

I saw Sam a week ago and he was phenomenal. So glad he recovered. :D

Mariah Carey has had a vocal nodule for years which serendipitously gives her the ability to sing in the whistle register. It has also caused her voice to deteriorate noticeably through the years, much more so compared to her peers (Whitney Houston, Celine Dion, etc.)

I don't know. I'd say that Witney Houston's voice has deteriorated considerably more.

I honestly wish she would have just stopped producing new music at least ten years ago. That way, I could have remembered her with only happy song memories and the way her voice used to be.

I agree :( We Belong Together (2003?) Is a fucking GREAT song, but I can't think of a single good one after that, and while she can still sometimes hit all her old notes, she is much less consistent these days. God though, 90s Mariah was just incredible.

It's possible to sung in whistle/flageolet register without nodules, but their presence can cause some word effects of that kind. I'm pretty sure she could do so before the damage, no?

Is that why she started singing so whispery? Or is the nodule the result. I just thought she had a strong voice with e.g. Ken Lee, but then started to go whispery. Maybe it was just a thing she tried, but I felt she stuck with it.

Whitney Houston

mmm no her voice was pretty shot too. The difference is Mariah Carey kept singing through hers, while Whitney pretty much stopped bc drugs, not to mention that Whitney's range (as talented as Whitney was) had nothing on Mariah's.

Elton John. After surgery his voice was noticeably deeper. He may have had nodes his whole life which gave him his unique voice early on.

Little known fact, Tom Waits blew his voice out while on tour supporting Frank Zappa. The audience were very loud and didn't get him. He's been raspy ever since.

Skrillex was a singer for a boy band before he had an operation on his vocal box. But he's still pretty successful right now.

[–]billpikaF L A I R B O Y S

Is it because she's forcing a style without warning up? Or is it genetic

It sounds like a disparity of breath that negatively affects the vocal folds during phonation, as well as detrimental over-muscularization of the vocal folds in the higher notes in "chest" without adequate breath to support the meeting of the vocal folds at those extreme levels. Note the consistent use of vocal fry, and the consistently slow vibrato especially in the higher notes in "chest"...classic signs that breath isn't moving out efficiently enough to allow the vocal folds to meet per the Bernoulli principle.

I don't know what that is, but you sound smart so I'm adding you to my list of friends. I will refer to you in conversations as my friend that's doing a PhD in vocal pedagogy! If I don't get the requisite amount of ooh's and ahhh's ... you will cease being my friend. Sorry.

Got any good youtube recommendations of vocal lessons/singing lessons? I used to sing, but circumstances has made it so I've barely used my voice at all, even for speaking, and I'm scared I'll damage it when I start going at it again. Can't sing for shit now :(

Wtf is with the downvotes. It's not like he said one was technically superior to the other. He just likes one more than the other.

But apparently he's WRONG!

Expecting downvotes or complaining about downvotes begets downvotes. On top of incorrectly using the word brigaded (in the context of reddit at least).

Yup. For a lot of people, complaining about downvotes equals an automatic downvote.

I think it may be due to the irrelevance?

They both did. Adele underwent surgery and had hers repaired.

she also damaged her vocal chords

Actually, they are vocal CORDS, not chords. I think the two are confused a lot because "chord" is a musical term. (Most singers/teachers/doctors call them vocal folds nowadays, just to avoid that confusion.)

Adele had a pretty common injury, called vocal fold polyp, IIRC. It usually is not caused by singing incorrectly, but rather by talking a lot in loud situations, or even by coughing a lot. If voice rest doesn't cure it, microsurgery is required, which I believe she had.

In the old days, the surgeon would "strip" the folds, which could cause scarring, and permanently change the voice (which is what ended Julie Andrews' singing career). Now, they can drain the polyp with a tiny incision, and the person can be back to full voice in about a month, singing just like they always did.

It's impossible to answer this, unless you are her doctor. Things that can damage the folds, in order of highest likelihood:

  • Gregarious talking in loud environments
  • yelling/screaming
  • chronic coughing
  • unsupported, high-larynx singing
  • chronic reflux (GERD)
  • high- intensity singing on compromised folds (which could be swollen due to a child or allergies) - this is most likely to cause a hemorrhage or polyp, rather than nodules.

Nodules are almost always the result of chronic voice abuse (talking and/or singing). Polyps and hemorrhage happen usually after a single traumatic event.

IIRC, Adele suffered a polyp.

Singing without proper technique.

Had a teacher that lost her voice, apparently she's just been talking in a way that wasn't natural for her, all her life, so she had to retrain how to speak. She even had to quit teaching.

Johnny Fontane also had nodes. He, too, knew that the Family must come first.

Thank you for this. I was wondering the same thing earlier last week.

I've kind of wondered this myself. My theory is that she and Amy Wine house have decided to go into hiding, because you never hear about either of them anymore.

Edit: I didn't know winehouse died. Sad. :-(

Just checking and I might be missing sarcasm here, but you know Winehouse died right?

Oh.... Uh... I did not. :-(

I guess if there was a subreddit where you shouldn't be judged for not knowing, it's this one.

Have you heard about Elvis?

NOT BEETHOVEN!? WHYYYYYYY!? WHYYYYYY!?

what? what about Beethoven? he's doing ok, right?

Speak louder, he can't hear you.

Oh, yeah. Some kind of overdose, its sad. She joined that famous club of musicians that died at 26/27 whatever the number was. It was extremely widely publicised so that's why I thought you might be joking. It's a tragic story.

Apparently, she died from alcohol poisoning, which is a kind of OD, but not exactly what you associate with the term "drug overdose".

Really? It was all over the news for months. I didn't even know her until she died and suddenly people couldn't stop talking about her.

Here's the trailer for the recently released documentary about her: Amy

I am terribly sad for you right now, sorry man :-(

They tried to make her go to rehab, but she said no, no, no.

There was a documentary that came out last month about her too.

Alcohol withdrawal, apparently.

Edit: I didn't know winehouse died

Talk about being /r/outoftheloop ;)

I'm about 99% sure Adele and Sam Smith are the same person, I mean, have you ever seen them in the same place? Didn't think so.

She found someone like him

I live in Hollywood, our kids like to play at the same studio... she's gained a ton of weight, is still diva, and she will turn mega-bitch if you try to take a picture in the same building she's present in.

That's sad, I really liked her when she started. But that's the thing with Brits in Hollywood, isn't it? As soon as they make their nut they're done with it (not a dos just an observation).

that's exactly how i would want to be famous. Step 1: make lots of money by selling something to people Step 2: fall off the face of the earth and become a nobody again with millions of dollars Step 3: winning

She got rich and got a real fucking life. Smart lady !

I can't hear that one Adele song without thinking about the last sad season of Rescue Me.

Which song? I watched all of rescue me but just have missed her there

With good keywords you can google most things, "Rescue Me Adele" got me the title of the song: Set Fire to the Rain.

Yup. Pretty sure it wasn't used in the show, but here's the promo.

Fucking eh, Rescue Me was always on point with its music.

It's like any artist that doesn't have new material being released, they fade out of the public spotlight.

She had a baby and decided it would be a good idea to focus on being a mommy!

I was wondering about her today, and bam, this post is showed. Universe is so weird.
