Plant super hot peppers close to the fence next year. I'll send some seeds. One bite of a scorpion pepper and they'll never come back.

Or stinging nettles!

Vining roses on a trellis with loads of thorns

I had to post a "TOMATO THIEVES SUCK!" sign when someone took 6 ripe celebrities from my plant in Torrance a few years ago. I think it was my socially awkward neighbor, but the alley by the garden was very heavily trafficked so it could have been anyone. Either way, they knew my feelings about tomato thieves after that. I had no other options as to where to plant, unfortunately.

I had this happen last year. Turns out it was the bratty kids across the street. I put up a small webcam and a small sign that said that the porch was being monitored. It stopped.

This year I moved all my tomatoes into the back yard. The only people who go back there are us and the lawn care people, and so far they haven't given a crap. If they have, they're taking so few tomatoes I don't notice.

and the lawn care people

get a load of moneybags over here.

Is it possible squirrels or something else made off with them? I had three tomato plants this year, and the squirrels took every single tomato. Need to invest in an airsoft.

Do they take the whole tomato? The ones where I live usually take a bite out of every one and then leave...

Little of column A, little of column B. They seem to bite into the green ones, realize they are no good and leave them. We have kept the birds at bay by providing food for them, but the squirrels are greedy and eat as much of that and my produce as possible!

I've heard of using plastic ''decoy'' tomatoes or red Christmas ornaments before the actual tomatoes ripen to deter birds. They take a few pecks, realize there's nothing good here and ignore them the rest of the year. Wonder if that would work on squirrels too or if they're too smart.

I have several ground hogs that have a daily buffet of tomatoes, lettuce, and strawberries. It really is annoying but it's nature...

No ground hogs around here, just tree rats!

Keep in mind that once a tomato starts to blush (turn color) it'll finish ripening after you pick it. Might be worth it to pick them at that stage and leave them on a window sill to finish.

While this is true, some prefer to wait until they are ripe on the vine.

OP should be able to vine ripen their tomatoes.

Keep in mind that once you pick a tomato, its flavor (or lack there of) is locked in. It may turn red after you pick it, but it will never have the flavor and sweetness of vine ripening.

Oh man, I'm shaking my fist right now. I've had this shit happen to me but it was squirrels, ground hogs and rabbits. Once I had some corn like 2-3 days short of picking and something ate the whole plant off at the base and just took the entire stalk!

I feel your pain. I once had some whore steal lemons from my tree!

Those damn lemon stealing whores....

Was the whore Mexican?

Haha ya where is the whore support? Cecil the lion stole my cucumbers. I'm gonna choot me a lion Lizbet!

Next year I know that I will keep my plants as far from the fence as possible.

You might instead take the Popcorn Sutton approach

Hehe, I did exactly the same thing when someone was stealing my Gatorade.

[–]Handbasket_For_One 1ポイント2ポイント  (0子コメント)

Thanks for the link. That was an interesting view into the life of someone I would never had seen.

I feel sorry for you- this is so mean! maybe you can put some chickenwire along the fence so it s not that easy to steal anymore.. :( And put a notice that "stealing tomatoes is still STEALING" - i guess many people who don t care for plants have no idea how much work it is..

Grow some habaneros & orange bell peppers. Then wait.

This same exact thing happened to me Tuesday evening. I live in an apartment and the only place that receives adequate sun is outside my patio in containers on mulch, completely in the open and unguarded. We grew tomatoes last year in the same spot with no trouble so I wasn't too worried about it but sometime after I got home from work at 5 and before sunset somebody snatched the only red tomato I had. I was planning on giving it another day before I picked it. I am going to try what another redditor suggested and pick them shortly after they turn and let them ripen inside. I was fuming and my neighbor said it was some kids passing by. I feel your pain and I am sorry for your loss. It's such a shame and is so demoralizing to know that my work went to waste knowing the kids did not even eat it.

I was in a community garden one year and had a major issue with finger blight. I knew that my stuff was going to get stolen no matter what I did so I injected the tomatoes, peppers and squash with syrup of ipecac. No problems by end of summer.

Edit: taking a single bite of a strawberry is definitely indicative of a squirrel.

Even though you're gonna make changes on how you grow things, I would still get a little camera to watch your porch. I'm the kind of person that likes to know who is taking their shit.

Put like an "experimental gmo" sign in with the tomatoes, something really scary.

[–]WhyThinkThat__Zone 4b 7ポイント8ポイント  (1子コメント)

Maybe a sign: "I fertilize my plants with my own poop!"

Yes.

I fertilize with your poop.

This totally happened to a friend of mine but it was her mentally unstable neighbor. The lady eventually went crazy and pulled up my friends bazil plant before the cops showed up and took her away. :(

That really sucks, my tomatoes are a bit pathetic this year since they sort of split apart because I forgot to put the canes up but I'd still be pissed if someone took the few I have on the stems. I keep my vegetables indoors or in the back garden, but I wouldn't put it past people to steal our plants if we left them out front. We've got some real nasty thieves scuttling around here.

[–]Exelar 1

We had a large family of Raccoons around last year and they stole the one apple on my little tree and probably several tomatoes.

I've had this happen with my strawberries. Worse there have been several where one bite was taken and then just dropped on the ground. I like to think it was a little kid, since they wouldn't know any better. I've also had several sunflowers torn off their stalk as well. Thankfully my tomatoes are in cages and haven't been bothered yet, but I feel your pain. It just makes you want to electrify the tomato cages.

I've been keeping a close eye on my tomato garden. My closest next door neighbor tried to grow tomatoes in the same kind of buckets I use and his tomato plants are all stunted, yellow and dying. He keeps commenting on how good mine look and going on and on about how I have a green thumb. Last week another neighbor was on vacation and Black Thumb went over and cleaned out all the veggies off their plants. When they returned they were asking if anyone knew what happened to their garden. Everyone had assumed Black Thumb had permission as he has been quite social with that family for a few years.

I'm so sorry that happened to you. It must feel like you lost a child or something, and I know how that feels (I plant veggies too!) A restaurant near me had their flowers stolen earlier this season and put up a passive-aggressive sign near their plants. I might do that too if it made me feel a tad better... Sorry again!

hopefully the family it went to really needed the food. :(

My next-door neighbour does this. I live in a pretty rural area and you really have to trespass on my property to get to my garden. When I go away on vacation in August I always ask my brother to swing by the house and pick up anything ripe, so it won't go to waste. Every year he tells me there was nothing there. All picked.

I know it's my neighbour because we caught him taking a bag of earth once. Seriously, do you not have 57 cents to go to the hardware store and get your own earth? Damn thief!

Could it be an animal? I get possums eating all sorts in my yard.

Also, one time I had cushions go missing off of my front verandah. Creepy. Right outside my bedroom.

It is my hope that they really needed the tomatoes, therefore you helped someone in need.

Good job, way to help your fellow man.

Doubtful. People in need use food stamps. I doubt anybody in need would go around stealing fruit and vegetables from someones garden. Only thieves who don't have any consideration for others would do this, irrespective of their need level.

I'd steal your shit too. There are only two things money can't buy - True Love and home grown tomatoes.

Or you could, I don't know, grow your own.

I actually go to a farmers market and get them. I am too honest to steal.

Good. It's so wrong to steal someone's hard work.
