I only have friends who socially toke

I don't think he's the kind of person who should be limiting his potential friendships.

It's a girl btw!

You misspelled "grill." A "girl" is what you cook bratwurst and chicken on: "Want to come see my new propane girl?"

I think you meant grizzly. A grill is a thing a fish uses to breathe underwater.

I think you meant grail. A grill is something you take home to your parents only to remember they never loved you.

"We seek the holy grill."

[–]Voxhd 4

I see so many girls using the term "woke" these days.

i seen them yesterday they got their nails did

You're just not socially woke enough to understand his/her need for high caliber friends.

[–]Anach 0

I was going to say something similar.

I have bad englando so I want to ask wether "societal" is a word or not.

thank mr. societal

Yes

Yes

Sorry for bad english

Genuinely curious..."socially woke" means socially aware? or socially awake? something like that, right?

*edit...never mind....I just googled it. Yes. urban dictionary says it means being aware.

Stay woke is referring to being aware of the race caused police brutality in this instance, became popular in the black community after Mike Brown and Eric Garner died.

Soooooooo is it sarcastically misused or?

I've found that this term is usually used by people with some delusions about what 'awake' or 'aware' means. Think Conspiracy theories (wake up sheeple!), White Supremacists (get racially aware, you stupid SJW!), ect.

Really? That's funny because my few fb friends that do it are black and using it to describe people who are/are not aware of systemic injustice (racism in particular). Like posting something about Sandra Bland with the caption "stay woke" or describing people who deny the existence of systemic racism as "unwoke."

Right on the money, the people commenting on here are, ironically, pretty unwoke.

Being aware, usually with a focus around one particular issue and a nagging propensity to view all other issues through that lens while ignoring conflicting information. So basically just like everyone else.

I feel the same about people that murder English syntax and semantics.

hhhnnngggnngggggnngggrammar

There's...nothing really wrong with this? I mean I doubt anyone here who has strong political opinions would want to be friends with people who were politically apathetic.

I personally try to stay as noided as possible.

Yea but would you ever post something like that on fb?

Probably venting

doesn't make it okay. Still incredibly annoying

What is she even trying to say? What does "woke" mean? Was she trying to say awoken?

Stay woke=know what's going on. It's slang. The guy/girl's saying that they only want to be friends with people who are up to date on social issues. Personally I don't see how this is /r/iamverysmart material.

Not completely accurate. Stay woke is referring to being aware of the race caused police brutality in this instance, became popular in the black community after Mike Brown and Eric Garner died.

[–]PM_ME_YOUR_BAZINGAS 12ポイント13ポイント  (1子コメント)

I agree that this doesn't fit /r/iamverysmart.

basically this person is saying, "i can't be friends with you if you decide to be ignorant about current events." Personally I try to be more patient with some of my friends who are naive about social issues because there's a chance they'll come around, but at the same time I can sympathize with the frustration this person feels.

I'd say it does

I don't think it's wrong to avoid people who live under a rock, but usually when people complain about this kind of thing, its because someone disagrees with them rather than doesn't know the subject. This person most likely is complaining that not everyone echoes back the exact same opinions that she holds (I can't imagine she'd care enough to post to Facebook otherwise)

Oh, okay. I guess I'm old, I didn't know that.

Saying "stay woke" is incorrect though. I mean I now get what they mean after reading this thread, but it still makes you sound dumb as shit to people who aren't "woke".

Edit: I now realize the irony that I can never be friends with this person

You shouldn't be downvoted for asking this question. I had no idea what she was trying to say either.

It's worded quite poorly, but still. I understand the sentiment. It gets really frustrating when there's nothing on my news feed except Donald Trump, the confederate flag, Cecil the Lion, or the five slain service members.

Just people parroting shit from politically biased groups without thinking about it critically.

You need better friends.

Unfortunately, a lot of them are from the military and they usually have very narrow views.

And as always, enablers.

The mere fact you call it woke tells me you're not ready.

If you're a racist who can't handle slang you're not used to, we can't be friends.

"If you disagree with me you are wrong"

These sort of people really suck.

verysmart people always say praise science, fuck religion but never realize the irony when they say "if you disagree with me you are wrong". one of the first rules of science is that most of what we know could be disproven or changed in a second with knew knowledge.

To be my friend you must routinely be awoken by a minimum of four friends, thus being socially woken.

This seems more /r/im14andthisisdeep than /r/iamverysmart but who am I to judge.

This might be "slang" but it's still fucking incorrect English. I wasted waaaay too much time trying to figure out what the fuck was going on here. People, we are living the beginnings of Idiocracy.

Well, according to the resident SJWs, that's your fault for not magically knowing that this particular stupid butchering of English refers to ... people who aren't aware of this particular stupid butchering of English. Privileged shitlord and such.

lol there are a lot of SJW's coming through here to downvote anyone who makes fun of this. The reason this sucks is the condescension, and the fact that OP doesn't really care about whether people are aware of the issues, but about whether people agree with him/her.

An asshole and an SJW! ..oh my mistake, they're one in the same!

I hate the word societal. Give me a context where you can't just say "social" instead. They mean the same thing, except one makes you verysmart, and the other is a word that is actually commonly used.

by way of proof, from Merriam Webster:

social - of or relating to people or society in general

societal - of or relating to society

Well.... things relating to society are kind of different than purely social issues. Like, not brushing your teeth might cause you some social issues, but societal issues wouldn't include your funky breath.

That depends entirely upon how long it's been since he's brushed. If it's measured in years, it very well could constitute a public health emergency.
