Graphic design is by no means a jobless field. Can't speak to the others, but I don't know why they're ragging on graphic design.

They belong to that selected group of designers who can't follow a brief and believe they are misunderstood artists.

They belong to the group of fine artists who mistake what they do for graphic design.

Depending on where you are it can be tough finding something.

If you enter the graphic design field (or any art/media field for that matter) and you don't go where the work is, you're wasting your time and money.

If you enter any field and you don't go where the work is, you're wasting your time and money.

As a recent graduate with a degree in Graphic Design I would agree. It seems everyone wants 5 years or more experience in their specific industry. Guess I'm stuck slinging drinks for a while....

I'm an art director at a large U.S. Company. My contractor designers starting pay is $68 per hour, Hardly starving artists. I mean of course unless they suck at at.

It's the top 5% of graphic designers who make the other 95% seem to suck at it.

I was going to say... I work for a software company and we have a team of graphics designers on our payroll. It sounds like what they meant was "artists"

Yeah, I can afford a whole room.

Maybe he is a lazy freelance graphic designer ?

Pretty sure the market for virgins is still strong.

My buddy is a graphic designer...he got laid of in the recession and been working at no frills for years :(

yeah, it's being too choosy if anything. Sometimes you gotta freelance to make connections. Also there's Creative Circle and The Creative Group which are both something akin to job (full to temp) agencies for graphic designers, web designers, i.e. (digital artists). Also craigslist under jobs->art. Literally tons of places hire designers you just have to look. (I am also a designer)

For Graphic designers the issue is more that they don't get paid what their skills should reasonably afford them, layoffs, or just getting dismissed is a fact of life, and there is a ton of competition since any asshole with Photoshop and about a year of experience can say they're one too.

When you are a bartender and unhappy being a virgin, you are apparently a shit bartender. To a drunk, a bartender is divine.

Probably a female bartender and probably virgin by choice. Even ugly male bartenders get hit on daily.

Their attention whoring sob story probably turns away tips rather than bringing them in.

Yeah, my first thought was at least they have a job

But they didn't get their dream job right out of college with the same degree everyone else has. You have to feel bad for them

"You don't get it man, 9-5 job might be just fine for YOU, but that's just not for me"

That virgin bartender is gonna need more than just the tip.

graphic designers could've made a better sign than that.

...Did you give em' a tip?

Tipping pussy is encouraged.

what about a fedora?

  • I know lots of graphic designers who make good money.

  • No musician could ever reasonably claim that they thought it would be easy. This makes it sound like they went to music school under the promise of a cushy musician job waiting for them once they graduated.

  • Being a bartender isn't all that bad. Depending on the place, they certainly make more money than a lot of their customers.

Can I say, "I'm a professional baseball player, which in the real world means I'm simply an office worker?" No, because if I were a baseball player, I'd be playing baseball. Instead, I'm working at an office. There are many, many, many working, employed musicians and graphic designers. They're acting like they've taken on noble sacrifice in adopting this lifestyle, but the fact of the matter is that they're probably just not very good or very dedicated or very smart about how to make money doing what they like.

writes "I DON'T CARE I CAME HERE TO DRINK AWAY MY PROBLEMS.. NOT PAY FOR YOURS " on a scrap of paper and puts it in the tip jar

Very few people get to be paid well for their hobby. I'll tip like I always do but don't think it'll be more than usual because you played the odds and lost.

Still wouldn't tip. Why should I give you my money just because you hate your job and have no marketable talents? Why should that make my beer more expensive?

Maybe should have thought about their career path before jumping into college?

Yeah, because being miserable in an office is better than being miserable behind a bar, with your art as a side job/hobby.

But, when I work in my office, I don't go begging people for money.

I get no tips for doing my job, why should I subsidize their poor education/career choices?

And what you're doing is subsidizing the bar owner while they pay the bartender less than min wage. That's what really pisses me off about tipping industries. Buy a $20 meal or run up a $50 bar tab, now pay my employees directly so I don't have to. And if you think that cash tip is being claimed for taxes, you're extremely naive.

Exactly, in which other profession do business owners ask for their employees to be paid by the customers directly?

I am a software professional and my customer(s) do not pay me or my software developers. I pay them a wage that is decent.

The logic is that tipping should actually benefit the customer. You're paying the same amount anyway, because they would have to raise prices if they discontinued tipping. Tipping makes the employee accountable to the customer directly. If I'm getting paid flat minimum wage, I have almost no incentive to do more than the bare minimum work. If the customer's satisfaction affects how I get paid, damn straight I'm gonna bust my ass.

I'm not saying tipping is good or bad. I'm just explaining the logic.

[–]Vornim 4

Because unfortunately we don't have spots available for everyone in the world to have office jobs. Someone still has to do jobs like these, even though everyone goes to college these days.

Everyone I work with is fucking talented in their chosen art, and we all still have to live with food service jobs. And for the most part we do it humbly, hoping someday people we'll value that we are helping them achieve their desired lifestyle.

It's not begging you for money. We're providing a service to you, so we deserve to get paid. I agree the tipping system is pretty fucked, but it's a necessary evil if you want to promote locally owned restaurants and bars. It's not going to change anytime soon

It's ridiculous that asking to be fairly compensated for the service you provide constitutes "begging" now.

A lot of people don't realize what goes into being a career bartender/server. It's not just filling waters and running food, you have a knowledge and a skill set that most people couldn't do. It's tough work, and most of us are super intelligent, kind people who at the end of the day somewhat enjoy what they do.

But why does the customer need to pay for that directly? Why can't the owner pride themselves on hiring the best service by paying them fair wages?

I'm trying to understand why you think it's appropriate to shame customers and not your boss.

I never said it was perfect. It ends up saving you (the guest) money and time. Look at places that don't use the tipping system (i.e europe) service there is typically slower than what you would expect here in the states. That's typically okay there because it's also more ingrained in their society that food shouldn't be fast. You're suppose to sit down and have a drawn out dinner/ lunch because you're suppose to enjoy it. Here that typically doesn't fly, people want fast and cheap. So, what are people that own those sort of places doing? They're paying their employees less and having the guest "tip" them on it. If you didn't have to tip us, you would still be paying the same amount roughly, because where do you think the owners are going to get that extra money to pay us? That's right, that 10$ burger just turned into a 20$ burger.

Are you paid under the living wage so you need tips? No? Do you enjoy the service they provide? Yes? Then stop being an entitled brat about it.

Its not entitled to expect me to give you charity for being a bartender? Fuck that. I have family that have picked strawberries for 12 hour days in summer sun for pennies, where's their tip? Fuck you and your entitled attitude. I've waited and don't give a fuck about tips because I aim for better jobs later on for money, not pity from strangers

Then don't go out and waste these people's time. It's a career choice now homie, with a lot of room for growth, where you can make some serious cash. So knock it all you want, I have better hours, and more freedom than a lot of other people in different fields, and I enjoy what I do.

Okay cool dude if you're successful that's all that matters, I'm just saying the entitlement lies with waiters acting like they should be paid a tip no matter what. Anybody can bring me a plate and refill my water, its not like a barber giving me a dope cut or a DJ really keeping the party live and fun, both of which can be really difficult. I'd rather even pay the chef tip for making a solid meal long. As long a waiter doesn't give me attitude or something i could get the same result from a robot or conveyor belt.

And the reason I say this is because the OP was trying to say people like me are entitled for not feeling its right that business shift the burden of payment onto the customer and rob the waiter of consistency, just so they can cut costs. Its not entitled to expect an employee be adequately paid and for a customer to purchase a service without having to give charity

Well from your statement right there I'm going to assume you're not going to high quality restaurants, or even bars. You're dealing with order takers that literally just do that, take your order and refill your drinks. You're not going out to a place where the server/bartender can tell you everything you need to know about the wines/beers/preperation techniques that are used in the kitchen, and where exactly that 60$ steak you just bought came from. If I'm telling you that you should probably get a nice chenin blanc with that seafood dish, or a deep cab sauv to pair up with your steak. Yea I expect you to tip me.

Edit. It's not charity, it's me providing you a service. It's you paying me for delivering you food, suggesting things, pairing beverages with your food, cleaning up after you, and smiling and being polite to you and your 12 top separate check table, even though you walked in 25 minutes till close and want drinks, 2 courses and then want to camp out for another 45 minutes after you finish.

You're correct, I wasn't talking about that, I meant places like Applebee's or olive garden. If you help me pick out a wine or something yeah that's something I couldn't do so I would be happy to tip you for the help

Oh and that DJ couldn't keep any party "alive" without the help of those entitled bartenders. Who else would be shoveling everyone vodka redbulls while you try and fist pump yoyr way into that broads heart?

Is it OK if I stiff you on the tip if I don't waste your time?

Like, if I refuse you listen to anything you have to stay and just bark simple orders at you, your expertise wasn't a part of the equation and doesn't need to be tipped, right?

Bro, you can do whatever you want to do. People like you (read, idiots) don't pay my bills. You're a small minority that I unfortunately get to deal with within my line of work. I'll still go home after my shift, drink a beer hang out with friends and still get to do cool shit with or without your money.

Hahaha you will never never make as much money as me though so, congrats for that.

Enjoy your food career hahahahahahah

Wow man, bragging about how much money you make over the internet. I bet you only fuck models and strippers and only eat the most endangered of animals.

Meanwhile in the real world, no one on this site gives a shit who you are or how much money you claim to have.

Again, this is not my problem.

If you can get better jobs, go get them and earn your living. Just because you cannot find a better job, it does not make it my responsibility to pay you.

Look at the rest of the world, all waiters/waitresses earn a living wage because they have a decent hourly wage. Here, waiters/waitresses like the under the table "tip" which they don't have to report to IRS.

I, for one, am happy that me and family are moving to Europe from here.

I hate that attitude. Restaurants are supposed to pay full minimum wage if a waiter gets zero tip, if they don't get it or dont like how things are they should take it up with restaurants and lawmakers, not people who want services without giving out obligatory charity. Id rather tip a janitor or garbageman for dealing with actual shit all day not somebody moving dishes back and forth

Hope you don't expect "no tipping" in all of Europe.

You sound like you're going to be a piece of work in any country you wind up in. Good riddance

We're glad too.

People downvote this because they're likely liberal arts majors who are pigeon-holing themselves into the same situation. Life isn't all about doing what you're passionate about, people. This is America. You have to work hard to get what you want - very few ever actually get to turn their hobbies into their dream job.

...This is the Internet, and that sentiment stands true for every other country in the world, many of them vastly more so than America.

I think this is a uk pub judging by the taps.

or maybe people hate assholes you judge other people's career choices

A pub asking for tips? What is this, America?

[–]Rather_Unfortunate 2ポイント3ポイント  (1子コメント)

I've seen tip jars in pubs before. I've only ever used one once, though, in a particular pub in York where one of the staff was absolutely fantastic.

Which one, if you don't mind me asking?

Shout out to Kronenbourg 1664.

Fuck that's depressing. Far from making me want to tip I'd probably find somewhere more cheerful to drink.

As a female, I have to say I'd be intrigued to know which was the virgin (if it wasn't immediately obvious, I mean). Kinda like when people advertise "5 cute kittens and one really ugly kitten for sale" and everyone wants the ugly one.

id be dropping 20s in that jar all night, that is the saddest thing ever.

This is funny?

Being a virgin is not a bad thing...

Wouldn't a tip just prolong their misery? Perhaps the kindest thing is to just let nature take it's course.

I'm sorry but I don't buy into someone wanting pity for the poor choices they made for themselves.

To make matters worse, they work in a place with 1664 and Heineken on tap. Talk about hitting a rock bottom.

At least their honest about it but still doesn't make me want to tip more than 20% at best

Wah wah, feel sorry for me and tip more. Fuck off. You want a tip be a good bartender.

That's so awesome. What pub, I'll probably send a check soon.

Edit Am I seriously getting downvotes because I want to send strangers money, or because the creep factor? Lol
