Our repost cycle runs better than the government.

Same approval rating along with incumbents constantly reelected! This makes too much sense

[–]PAO_RT_IN_THE_KISSER 16ポイント17ポイント  (6子コメント)

With RES I've tagged a lot of the heavy power users of reddit and it's surprising/amazing how a lot of the front page is mostly from a few users.

surprising/amazing

No, it's just sad. All the power users do is exploit reposts, and all a majority of reddit does is upvote them

'just sad' is a strong way to feel about people seeing things they like and clicking a dumb arrow

Somehow that makes it even sadder.

Interestingly, it's part of reddit hx. When reddit first started, the founders had bots posting stuff so it would look busy and popular.

I wonder if these powerusers are related to that mechanism.

With all the subreddit rules and shit, Reddit is a pretty accurate representation of a large and sprawling bureaucracy.

Its nice if they wait more than a day.

Most TV channels have reruns of shows that aired last night in the middle of the day. Think of fast reposts as those. Or don't. It's a free country. Go exercise your freedom. Don't keep standing there, you're making me very uncomfortable.

Reddit isn't a tv show, radio network, or movie theatre. Reposters aren't reposting "content you may have missed," they're taking popular content and rehosting it for karma. A lot of the time, they even claim to be OP. It's just pathetic.

Reposters aren't reposting "content you may have missed,"

Except that's literally precisely what happens or else they would not be upvoted.

Government's good for nothing am I right?

Except when it comes to landing on the moon, building the GPS network, building and maintaining 47,856 miles of interstate highways, making our drinking water safe, making sure our food is safe, developing countless modern technologies like the internet, or the Coast Guard protecting 133,312 mile so of coast line with a budget of only $6.82 billion.

I mean if we ignore all that it's the worst.

Look out, it destroys the heck out of that worldview when they find out disabled people have jobs.

It's a fun game, though. Watch the left and the right be confused! I had a bus driver ask me somewhat condescendingly why I took that bus downtown every Monday in my power suit. I replied in my sweetest Good Girl voice that it's because I have a work meeting every Monday. He looked confused.

The next time I got on the bus was with the county commissioner. That bus driver greets me by name and asks how work is now. Not all of us can work, but I think a vast majority of us would like to, and frankly the paycheck is way prettier this way.

Back in college I worked a number of retail jobs and it was always awkward when people would come up to me and say things like, "It's so nice to see someone like you out of the house and working! Good for you!"

Yup. My grandfather was diagnosed with mesothelioma and since back when he was in the Navy (about 60 years ago) he had to work with asbestos in ships he got absolutely everything paid for by the VA. He and my grandmother haven't had to pay a cent for his treatment which could have been quite expensive.

stealing jokes actually. its so generic, there a set of generic comments you can make on here that will guarantee upvotes and people fall for it everytime

Yes this is Reddit, where everything disagreeing with /u/s1ugg0 is getting downvoted to the bottom while "I BET SHE GETS DISABILITY" and "LOOK AT ALL THOSE PITCHFORKS LOL" are pushed to the top.

Yep, that's Reddit alright. Let's not talk about how a group of people managed to shut down the entire government by throwing a hissy fit that cost us billions, and remember how cool we were when we landed on the moon.

It's amazing how much the government gets done, considering the number of people there to make sure it doesn't so they can "prove" government is worthless.

Well to be fair it's still just people doing it, it just so happens they were paid by the government. Whether or not it would be better/cheaper/faster without the government is a different question.

The US Government is the most stable and effective in the world considering how much we run shit. Any other government you could compare us to that may be better in some way governs much less than us.

Building codes that are actually enforced, tons of scientific research is taken up by the government, disaster relief is heavily government run, etc.

Same with most developed nations. Governments do a lot of good and have a lot of moving parts. You would miss it within days if you moved to a developing country where roads aren't checked up on, businesses are loosely regulated, and officials are easily bribed.

Well… I lived for a year in Egypt which had, you could argue, only a moderately functioning government. I did fine, because I was:

  • a foreigner
  • with plenty of cash
  • with education
  • no need for employment or government services

Even then I still made use of the subway regularly, which for sure was subsidized and run by the government. Had I relied exclusively on taxis for transportation instead, I would have paid a small fortune getting around the city. Just visiting one of my friends in the south part of the city would have cost me $50/month instead of $5.

Basically, I think most foreigners would't notice these differences as visitors (even fairly long-term visitors), but you would if you were born there and lived there as a normal resident.

I never really thought about it like that. Most of the governments that are comparable in size are pretty much governments that I would not want to be governed by.

it's not worthless, it's just ridiculously inefficient.

The majority of what the government does supports commerce and as a result, the United States is the wealthiest nation ever on the face of the earth. That doesn't mean legitimate waste should be ignored, bad policies preserved or that criticism should be silenced. But the constant cynicism is absurd.

But what have the Romans ever done for us?

In Canada, the health care system is managed by the government, and administration costs amount to $416 per person, per year.

In America, the health care system is managed by the corporations, and administration costs amount to more than twice as much, despite having the inherent advantage of a larger population and thus should benefit from economies of scale.

I'll stick with government.

Some people actually argue that the free market approach isn't working that well because there's still too much regulation.

Yeah, I don't get the post office arguments. If you discount the 75-year pension funding bullshit mandate imposed by Congress, the post office would actually run in the black. As much as people have gotten away from personal letters or sending in bills by mail, there is still a humongous volume of mail being processed. The post office isn't going anyway. If it's failing, it's because partisan politics are trying to make sure it fails.

[–]Kharos 0

The Postmaster General actually supported the 75-year pension funding at the time the law was passed. The reason for this is because the USPS was that well-runned that it was actually on track to fulfill the newly tacked-on financial obligation. And then the economy cratered and the anti-government ideologues in Congress (i.e., the Republicans) would not budge in providing USPS relief because they relish the moments government-affiliated projects go to shit.

...but the US Postal Service loses billions of dollars per year. It operates in the red and just goes further in debt. No real business would ever be able to operate like that.

It speaks volumes that most of those things have been such a constant in everyone's daily life for so long that they forget who is providing it to them. Government has never hurt me and have only helped when I've interacted. Apparently I'm the minority according to FB and Reddit posts though.

I have dual citizenship, Brazilian and US. I cannot beleive how Americans can even begin to critisize our goverment as much as some people do.

Seriously, have you guys SEEN what goes around in other places? Ohh....ONE officer killed ONE person for a unjustified reason? And now the WHOLE police force is corrupt?

The only place where I have seen a police officer be kind and actually be someone who wants to HELP his comunity is in the US.

In alot of countries citizens would be happy if their police force WASNT corrupt, just do their job. But no, in the US most officers go above and beyond to be a example yet people critisize the police as a whole.

What do you mean one officer killed one person? Stating it that way makes it not seem like a big deal, but it happens frequently enough to be a big deal.

In conclusion, if it weren't for government we wouldn't have roads, water, food, or computer networks.

You'd have roads, but they'd have all sorts of various tolls and different means of collecting them. And they'd be dangerous.

You might have water, but there'd be no guarantee that it was safe, and there would be terribly inefficient and inconsistent means of purifying it.

You have food, but would likely cost a lot more and food poisoning would be a much more regular occurrence.

And you'd have computer networks, but instead of the internet we'd all be using AOL, Prodigy, and countless other walled-in alternatives. And consumers would still be using dialup, because the idea of a centralized ISP would be rendered pointless due to those proprietary communities (even though something similar could be done, the leap would never be taken). In short, we'd be stuck where we were in the early 1990s. Hell, we might not even have THOSE, since the phone network would be a complete mess.

In no relation to other countries you are correct. While I don't think our government is good for nothing, it is run poorly. It is easily influenced by business in bending rules and supporting big business before the people. Also (personal opinion) it's budget is tremendously misaligned. The amount of money put into the military opposed to schools is terrible. It is one thing to have the largest military budget but ours far exceeded the next closest country's budget. In addition our management of the healthcare system is done very poorly and it needs to start with the exorbitant costs coming from pharmaceutical manufacturers - look at oncology costs and the uproar happening there, look at hep c, etc. While I am not saying we want to be a socialist society, there are some businesses that involve lives and need to be treated as such. It goes beyond Healthcare and even touches our regulations that are bent in order to allow fracing by the gas industry. If you haven't watched, I highly recommend gasland.

I am not discounting your statement because you are correct the US does a lot of good, but it definitely isn't run correctly. I don't know for sure if there is a government that does it very well but Sweden those sort of countries appear to do a decent job.

We need to hold businesses accountable. The two party system is terribly flawed.

Spending billions of dollars to go stand on a giant rock. Woo hoo

I don't know if maintaining our roadways is a good example, it is well documented that our infrastructure is rated poorly (compared to other developed nations). Plus do we not think that these things would not have been accomplished without the government?

Private companies are entering a space race. If I am not mistaken before it was prohibited for private entities were not allowed to enter space which would prohibit the development of a GPS network. Additionally, they have also subsidize unhealthy crops (on a large scale) so much it has priced low income families out of affording quality/healthy food. Moreover, private companies have been far more innovative that the government, too many examples here to list. If we eliminate the drug war the Coast Guard could become even more efficient at a lower cost.

Overall, while the government serves a purpose it is not the entity that keeps society progressing forward.

I'm sure the guy that said 'genocide all the feminists' was just making a harmless post about disability.

The point is that this attitude encapsulates a lot of the root causes of problems in modern government. The people who benefit most from the government are often those railing against it. This may be a lighthearted joke, but it's a joke rooted in very real, very harmful misconceptions.

It's... Fucking weird. Usually it's a lot more laid back and there will be some criticism of how things are run, and how things could be done better...
