This always reminds me of that JonTron fiasco where he said something was retarded and someone told him not to use that word and he said 'Sorry I forgot you were retarded'.

oh man I need a link to this.

"Playstation Now" is the most painfully retarded thing I've seen in a while. WTF even.

I never understood what 'powerful group' morty was referring to. national alliance on mental illness? advocates of political correctness in general?

[–]toresbe 78ポイント79ポイント  (40子コメント)

I think that using "retard" in the colloquial sense is absolutely dead wrong - but I still remember with fascination a Canadian girl I was speaking with; I used the word "retard" in the context "retards economic growth", and she flatly refused to continue the conversation. Pretty fascinating.

[–]EdChigliak 14ポイント15ポイント  (1子コメント)

Also when band leaders tell musicians to play retardando. Makes me laugh every time cuz I'm an idiot.

[–]mrshiznitz 14ポイント15ポイント  (0子コメント)

I found the kid who got put on the tambourines

[–]kinyutaka 25ポイント26ポイント  (4子コメント)

What are you, a retard?

Perfectly reasonable to end the conversation.

What this will do is retard the development of the country.

Perfectly retarded to get pissy over.

[–]MushroomedAnus 6ポイント7ポイント  (3子コメント)

I'm sorry, I'm a bit retarded. Could you please provide more examples?

[–]kinyutaka 16ポイント17ポイント  (1子コメント)

Look, Morty, there's retards and there's retarded people. Those kids on the short b(belch)us at your... at your school. Those are retarded people, Morty. And its wrong to make fun of them.

But, then you get your vegans, and your country music singers, and your Scientologists... that's just retarded, Morty.

[–]Lumpyguy 1ポイント2ポイント  (0子コメント)

This kind of reminds me of that one South Park episode about those harley davidson riders.

R.E.T.A.R.D.E.D, find out what it means to me.

Perfectly okay to start singing along.

My mother tells me of a story when she was a child, where she was hanging out with one of her friends, and my mother said that something was "retarded", and her friend replied: "Oh, I know what you mean, my brother is retarded". Her friend had a mentally disabled brother, and it made my mother feel terrible. She never used "retarded" in that way again. I try to keep this in mind.

[–]rapturerocks 4ポイント5ポイント  (4子コメント)

You said "retards economic growth" in conversation? I'm lucky if I can string a few clauses together without some variation on the word "fuck."

[–]toresbe 6ポイント7ポイント  (3子コメント)

Well, I was talking about austerity so I do tend to throw in quite a lot of profanity.

[–]gundams_are_on_earth 2ポイント3ポイント  (2子コメント)

This fucking Greek bailout, am I right, shitstain? Are you listening, bitch?

[–]toresbe 1ポイント2ポイント  (1子コメント)

Honestly not far from the truth. Fucking Germans. That piece of shit despot Schäuble.

[–]gundams_are_on_earth 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

I think "Fucking Germans" could describe so many things from the 19th-21st centuries.

She really was the real-life incarnation of Cecily Strong's "The Girl You Wish You Hadn't Started a Conversation with at a Party".

I was so surprised. I just naturally assume all Canadians are lovely. She's the exception, I guess.

[–]acog 5ポイント6ポイント  (0子コメント)

People have been fired for using the word "niggardly" (it has no racial overtones, it means cheap or stingy). And then there was the county official that demanded an apology over racial insensitivity when a colleague used the term "black hole."

[–]Not_a_Dirty_Commie 2ポイント3ポイント  (0子コメント)

I bet she'd flip if you were talking about something that's "Flame Retardant."

[–]the_starship 4ポイント5ポイント  (2子コメント)

That's like asking for your Coffee African American instead of black.

[–]roastbeeftacohat 2ポイント3ポイント  (0子コメント)

advocates of political correctness in general?

It's becoming an issue for a lot of comedians, many of them refuse to play university's anymore because the audience gets to pissy.

[–]rrawk 2ポイント3ポイント  (0子コメント)

I don't know what group it is, but it's probably the same one that woke up one day and somehow suddenly made confederate flags a big deal. It's quite interesting how these social movements seem to happen inexplicably overnight (or I just don't read enough news).

Association of people who aren't assholes

[–]macon_kosher_bacon 121ポイント122ポイント  (11子コメント)

One of my favorite exchanges between Rick and Morty.

[–]spacecaptainfac3 12ポイント13ポイント  (0子コメント)

The exchange directly after really clinches the joke though.

Jerry: What are you two talking about?

Rick: Apparently nothing.

[–]sillybear25 41ポイント42ポイント  (29子コメント)

The word was popularized by people who felt like they were doing the right thing, too. Good old euphemism treadmill.

It gets me thinking: Nowadays, I see people using the word "autistic" pejoratively. Will it get to the point that we need a new word for autism just because some assholes use "autist" to refer to anyone who doesn't fit their idea of normal?

[–]MOMMY_FUCKED_GANDHI 34ポイント35ポイント  (2子コメント)

It's just the most recent in a long line of clinical terms appropriated colloquially to be used as pejoratives (e.g. Idiot, moron, imbecile, retarded)

[–]Seriou 5ポイント6ポイント  (0子コメント)

It's funny, because people are using that word now since every single new term for 'retarded' has gotten to the point where it's so PC it's retarded.

[–]yetiman223 25ポイント26ポイント  (12子コメント)

You're not supposed to say "Morty is autistic" you're supposed to say "Morty has autism".

Autism is a condition of a person, not the definition of the person.

Example: if someone has cancer you don't say "Rick is cancerous" you say "Rick has cancer".

Its a way of maintaining the humanity first outlook people have on social, behavioral, and learning disabilities. The hope is to turn the attention to preventing and treating the affliction instead of preventing and treating the person.

[–]TheGhostofWoodyAllen 15ポイント16ポイント  (3子コメント)

This is the cultural change in a nutshell. They're not albinos; they're people with albinism. They're not little people or dwarfs; they are people with dwarfism. They're not autistics; they're people with autism. They're not retards; they're people with developmental or intellectual disabilities.

[–]chaingunXD 7ポイント8ポイント  (2子コメント)

That's retarded

[–]critically_damped 14ポイント15ポイント  (1子コメント)

That has retardation.

[–]TheGhostofWoodyAllen 4ポイント5ポイント  (0子コメント)

It has developmental or intellectual disabilities.

[–]sillybear25 3ポイント4ポイント  (6子コメント)

That's a good point, but it's not the entire issue. If you go back to the original R&M scene, Morty probably would have reacted the same way if Rick said the microscope would have "caused mental retardation". I agree that the phrasing is pretty important, but some words still end up being considered unacceptable.

[–]yetiman223 7ポイント8ポイント  (5子コメント)

Yeah, the "retardation" thing comes from the fact that it was co-opted as a way to insult people rather than to describe a condition. I think people are pushing for "differently abled", last I heard.

People like to blame the whole "treadmill of terms" shit on the "politically correct" when really we should be more upset at the inverse. If people stopped being such assholes we wouldn't have to make up new words for the mentally or physically disabled people.

Also language evolves to get more specific. "retard" clearly wasn't specific enough because a bunch of people started using it as an insult and it lost its clinical meaning.

So we create a new term "Differently abled". It is very specific to the situation and won't hurt anyone's feelings because it isn't directly saying that someone is inferior, just different. Its great for the community of people with "disabilities" because respect is built into the phrase.

Well thats just no fun right guys? How am I supposed to insult someone with that?

thats the fuckin point

[–]rrawk 1ポイント2ポイント  (3子コメント)

A turd wrapped in a pretty bow is still a turd. People get caught up on words and ignore meaning.

[–]yetiman223 1ポイント2ポイント  (1子コメント)

I don't think I understand your metaphor here.

Are you calling differently abled people turds?

[–]rrawk 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

I'm just going to let you think that's what I mean because that's funny.

[–]TheGhostofWoodyAllen 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

Well, that's actually the exact issue - that words' meanings change over time. "Mentally retarded" was introduced to replace terms like "idiot," "moron," "simpleton," and the like, but since it became a pejorative over time, they have since had to look for a new way to describe the condition. The new alternatives, like developmental disability, intellectual disability, and general learning disability, describe the same situation without providing the same kind of fodder for cultural co-opting that occurred with "mentally retarded." It's easy to go from "mentally retarded" to the "retard" pejorative, but it's harder to do that with with "developmental disability." Sure, you can still negatively refer to someone as such, but it's less likely to be used since it's a mouthful that can't be condensed to a nice rude nugget like "retarded."

[–]Syicko 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

I think what /u/rrawk meant was that "differently abled" is still used as an insult because everyone knows the meaning behind it. If anything it is worse because it is new. Rewrapping the meaning(the turd) in a new word(pretty bow) really hasn't done anything other than give people more ammo.

[–]rrawk -2ポイント-1ポイント  (0子コメント)

"You're not an idiot. You're just acting like an idiot."

[–]Jaraxo 8ポイント9ポイント  (0子コメント)

Yep. It was seen as the politically correct term for "morons" for a while, and it's now come full circle and is seen as the pejorative term.

    Yes. We'll start saying retarded.

    [–]BBQ_HaX0r 4ポイント5ポイント  (4子コメント)

It's almost like the meaning of words can change over time and that someone somewhere can use any word offensively if they wanted.

Crazy, looney, and a ton of other words for people with mental illness used to be technical terms. They have to change them every so often because people use mental illness terms as pejoratives and the words themselves eventually become more insult than description.

    [–]NovaStarLord 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

Meaning of words change depending how people used them or misuse them in this case, like the word nice for example it used to mean stupid.

    [–]pakattak 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

I mean, is that the hardest thing in the world to do? "oh no, I have to use a different word than the word I'm more comfortable using"

ITT: people completely misunderstanding the joke and still using retarded as a pejorative

    [–]SadApartment 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

Right! Rick is meant to be insensitive and self-centered - not someone you should be taking social cues from.

    [–]jostler57 5ポイント6ポイント  (1子コメント)

Personally, I grew up with the word "retarded" as not only the correct word for people with mental issues, but also, later, where young people used it to describe something that was bad in some way.

I still use it, somewhat regularly, in those same ways, and when people get offended (and they do), I just don't give a fuck. The word to describe the affectation of the mind for these people has changed a half dozen times in my lifetime, and at this point, I just, seriously, stopped caring to change along with the PC movement. The PC movement can suck my retarded dick.

Also, here's George Carlin bringing up very similar language issues:

They made the medical community stop using the words: Idiot. Stupid. Simple. And next up is Retarded.

Guess what you politically correct assholes, the medical community is just going to come up with some new term for mentally deficient window licking morons, and you assholes are just going to have to ban that one too.

    [–]frubbliness -1ポイント0ポイント  (2子コメント)

It's not the PC people who are making the medical community change. It's the people who water down the meaning of the word by throwing it around all the time who do that. For the most part, the "PC" crowd wants to stop its use as a general insult, not as a medical term.

    [–]ApostleofDiaz -1ポイント0ポイント  (1子コメント)

You're retarded. Know why it's used by common people, because it describes idiots like you, who can't follow a simple train of thought to its logical conclusion.

I literally just got banned from /r/me_irl 3 days ago because I linked to a subreddit I made called /r/retarddogs.

The messages between the mod and I were.....well it was like speaking to a child. She/he didn't want me to use the "r-slur" so she/he banned me. I asked the mod what rule I broke. He/she said I was making fun of people.

I explained I didn't mean to and the subreddit is not made in a cruel way, but a joking way (check it out if you don't believe me). I then told the mod that you shouldn't just ban people for having a different opinion from you and while I don't think the word is offensive in the context I used it in, i wouldn't say the word retard or anything else mean like that on her/his sub again and asked if I could be unbanned.

He/She wouldn't because she didn't think I learned my lesson about the word retard. The mod then posted some Ellen DeGeneres (and friends) video on why I'm a bad person for saying the word retard.

I literally responded with a video clip of this exact same scene from Rick and Morty and went about my way.
