Yeah...the first time I watched I was like, wtf.....

Glad I stuck it out though. The end is the best part. The whipping and whipping sounds effects just take over the whole video.

One of my absolute favorites by MGMT, such a great song when I'm in the car

It's my favorite song to listen to on MDMA. Time to Pretend too.

I went to an MGMT concert a few years ago. It was at a football stadium and as you entered, you were handed a glow stick. They told us not to break it until the band told us to. Shortly after playing this song, they told everyone to break their glow stick and try to throw it across the stadium to the other side. There were glow sticks going everywhere. It was so euphoric and trippy. There was a bad as guitar solo being played as it all happened. One of the coolest things I've ever seen.

Also, my brother and I danced to this song at his wedding. It was glorious.

I was at Electric Forest this year, and during Bassnectar people were taking out 50+ glow sticks at a time, cracking them, and tossing them on the big drops. At any given point there were thousands of glow sticks in the air. So cool.

Edit: I know this is common practice at other shows. I was just relating my experience.

Man I need to listen to some Bassnectar again. So so so good. One of the first artists that got me into electro.

[–]heart_BURNxxxwatercorexxx 10ポイント11ポイント  (2子コメント)

That is how it was when I saw Bassnetar at Bonnaroo this year. So much fun.

I was at Bassnectar's set at both Bonnaroo and Electric Forest, so I can inform you that his Bonaroo set was way cooler :)

I ran into these guys in a bar and unknowingly started chatting. They were playing a show at Stubbs the next day and took my number and put me on the guest list. The two lead singers were seriously kind and down to earth people. Show was great btw.

Had a festivus party in 2007 or 2008 and they came with one of my friends all dressed in santa outfits. I lived around the corner from arlenes grocery and they were there preforming. I had never heard of them at this point so I was just like whtever, whats up and kept drinkin

I was working at a Barnes & Noble in the music department when this album came out. We were forced to play albums that record companies had contracted with B&N to be in-store music. We had the absolute worst selection of shit, just atrociously bad music, but we had to play those albums and nothing else. And then one day by the grace of the gods we got a box in the mail including this album.

For the next few months this literally was the soundtrack to my life. My co-worker and I refused to play anything else and we were blown away by Dave Fridmann's production.

Dave also mixed Tame Impala's Innerspeaker and Lonerism. Whatever that guy touches is gold.

I hated this song when I first heard it, but grew to love it. Unfortunately I only really like this, Time to Pretend, and Kids. I've listened through the rest of the album (and the second one), but nothing ever really did it for me

You should try Of Moons, Birds and Monsters again. I would put that up there with those 3 songs.

fucking brilliant song

Congratulations is a great album. I didn't like it at first but it grew on me over time. I think it's because the songs are just so long and boring and nothing really happens. It just teases you and builds up for something great.

I think Flash Delirium is the best song they've ever made. No one really likes that song the first time they hear it because nothing really happens in it. It just builds up for a refrain and then stops and starts over again.

The first time it happens is at 0.30

Then again from 0.54 to 1.09. You really think something is going to happen here but no it just cuts off at 1.09

Then at 1.40

Then you get a long build-up from 2.07 to 2.51 until finally we get to hear the band's weird boys choir voices singing in unison which reminds of everything we loved about their hit songs from Oracular Spectacular.

And then there's the annoying screamo part from 4.00 to the end that I always try to skip

With MGMT, due to the nature of their songs and style you can't really appreciate the journey until you already know where it's going to take you. So the first time is always going to suck and you're just going to be annoyed but then after you listen to it few times and learn to appreciate all the small things that makes this band so great it becomes pure magic.

Here are some other amazing songs that everyone should listen to a few times before calling the band a one-hit wonder.

Flash Delirium

Time to Pretend

Brian Eno

It's Working

Congratulations

Weekend Wars

Of Moons, Birds & Monsters

Alien Days

The Youth

Someone's Missing

Siberian Breaks

Introspection

Cool Song No. 2

I Found A Whistle

Song for Dan Treacy

Great list. I think the songs on Congratulations are, on average, way better than Oracular Spectacular. LP3 though... D:

This is a great comment on how to appreciate MGMT's music. I hate when people say things like MGMT makes shitty music now. They've shifted more and more to psychedelic pop, which might not be for everyone, but is also not so accessible on the first listen.

I was actually disappointed when I first listened to their second and third albums, but I kept giving them a chance with each album and found that after a few listens the songs really started to grow on me. Its like with more listens the songs open themselves up and you can see the beauty of them. I can say now without a doubt I enjoy those two albums as a whole, much more than Oracular Spectacular, though I do love that one as well.

I think they're are some earlier tunes that can be added to this list.

I feel the same way. Kids took me awhile to get into. Those other two were instant loves for me. The sad part is, the group doesn't like those songs. I've given their entire discography a fair listen, but I can't get myself to enjoy it.

Their main focus is psychedelic pop.

The song Congratulations? It's one of those few that never gets old for me.

I always loved Weekend Wars. Or at least the initial thirty seconds of it.

I can listen to their whole discography and enjoy bits and pieces of songs just cuz their songs have pretty abrupt changes

[–]Poobu 2

I thought Weekend Wars was one of the strongest tracks on the first album.

I hated it, then warmed up to it, then got burnt out on it after hearing it at every BBQ/party ever. And now it turns up on every Pandora or Spotify station I make, regardless of genre.

For those who couldn't really get into the rest of MGMT from the album, you may like their live renditions from Morning Becomes Eclectic. I prefer their live interpretations to the album.

Those are my favorites but I'll rock out to the handshake every once in a while

That's so odd to me since my favorite songs are not the one's you listed, though I obviously love those one's too. Which albums did you listen to? 2005 Time to Pretend and Oracular Spectacular? Did you ever listen to Congratulations?

Yea I listened to Oracular Spectacular and Congratulations. I appreciate that it's not run of the mill music, but I'm kinda picky when I comes to quirky music

You can listen to their EP on Spotify it was released before Oracular Spectacular. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Time_to_Pretend_(EP)

You might like it, you might not. I totally understand having a very particular taste in quirky music, I'm the same but for whatever reason I love that early stuff off the EP

I really want to see what those guys have up their sleeves. I'm hoping for one more great album. Their live shows are amazing! Really nicely built sets.

This is my favorite remix of the song. It's called 'The Insomniax Remix'!

I saw MGMT in Columbus about about 5 years ago with my wife and best friend. It was one of the greatest shows I've ever been to. I remember the people next to us shared their weed with us, and we shared with them. After that MGMT played a 20 minute freestyle jam after finishing "Time to Pretend". The crowd was so happy and there was so much goodwill towards everyone. Even the security and police were getting into it.

I had the exact opposite experience. They were high out of their mind, I assume on some type of opiates, and could barely play the instruments. It was literally one of the worst, if not the worst, live show I've ever seen. They have some decent studio songs, but after seeing them like that, I lost all respect for their music.

Ive heard that from some people and im sorry that happened. ibsaw them at bunbury fest in cinncinnati and in stl. They were great. It was a spiritual experience

I was also there at Bunbury. Great performance, but they don't seem to have the best attitude toward the crowd.

I've never seen MGMT live, but I see people reference their shows here pretty often having the same experience you did. They've popped up in more than one "What's the worst concert you've ever been to" thread. This post is actually the first time I've seen people praising their live show. It's nice to know they aren't always shitty live, I guess.

Seen them live 3 times and it was amazing everytime. It's all about peoples expectations going into the show. A lot of people expect a poppy dance party and what they get is a psychedelic adventure and that is "weird" or "boring" to a lot of people that just want to go and dance.

I lost all respect for their music.

Lol what? Talk about being a drama queen.

um... they were the worst band ive ever seen live. they literally stopped playing instruments and just played the cd at one point. this was in prospect park in brooklyn. it was right after this song came out

I saw them play at Bunbury in Cincinnati and while they didn't play an encore song they played all the hits (but kids) and their new CD. It was a really great experience and I would do it again in a heart beat. I simply can't imagine them just playing a cd in the middle of a show though. When did this happen?

Yeah, that was a joke they did when Kids was a big hit. It's actually kind of funny how many people like lnl8 were offended by it.

They played for an hour and then the ended concert with a silly karaoke number. Big deal. If one song will ruin your whole experience then maybe the band just isn't for you

I've heard they hate playing the singles from oracular and just play them off the CD.

They hate playing Kids and Time to Pretend because they were meant to be satirical songs but the fact that they blew up is the exact reason why they are against they're against them. IIRC, Kids is making fun of repetition in pop music and Time to Pretend is (obviously) making fun of the superstar culture.

I don't think they hate playing either of these songs necessarily, they have always played Time to Pretend in their sets and when they were touring for their self-titled album in 2013/2014 they played kids in all of their sets with an extended psych jam in it and looked like they were really getting into it.

Time to Pretend is one of my favourite songs of theirs, they played it at Bunbury last year if I remember correctly. Kids was the only "super popular" song they didn't play.

I prefer their more psychedelic material but I will really never get sick of Time to Pretend, it's just such a great jam. I saw them at two festivals in 2013 and they did not play kids, but during their actual tour they played kids in almost every set I'm pretty sure.

I wouldn't be surprised if they don't play it at festivals just to spite half the crowd that is just sitting there chanting kids over and over and refuse to try to get into the rest of their set at all.

This probably happens at a lot of their shoes, it happened last year, I feel like it could have been part of the reason they didn't play an encore. They had just enough time for one more song too. It was the only disappointing part of the show, they had a huge backdrop that had a bunch of psychedelic shit playing on it the whole time. Just a bunch of swirls and all kinds of funky stuff. Someone also threw a glow stick up on stage and Andrew threw it back out into the crowd, and then someone threw it back at him.

IIRC, Kids is making fun of repetition in pop music and Time to Pretend is (obviously) making fun of the superstar culture.

I think you're reading into it too much. Andrew and Ben just made those songs in college for fun. I don't think they planned on making some sort of cultural statement with them

I've seen a lot of people saying they don't like playing them (never the cd thing though, why would any band ever do that?! Such bad practice, especially at a concert...) and I've seen a few people saying that they really enjoy playing those songs they just don't do if often. Honestly, If any band ever started playing a cd during the time they should be playing (unless there's a specific reason like switching sets or if they encounter an issue) I would immediately leave. That would be awful

It's what I hear too! I saw them in Melbourne in 2011 at an electronic music festival, where they were pretty out of place in the line-up. I loved their set, but they played Kids twice back to back just to fuck with the crowd... and everyone loved it. The impression I got was that they were laughing their ass off at the crowd in disbelief and mocking them. Despite that, I still fucking love MGMT.

I saw them when they came to my hometown just before they released their third studio album, and they were great, put on an amazing show with intensely trippy art in the background and even performed some of their new songs. It was probably because they were not used to performing. If you check out their most recent festival performances, they have become so much better as live musicians and artists, and in my opinion will only get better both in the studio and on the stage.

This is the first song they wrote I believe. Called We Care of their first CD 'We (Don't) Care'. It's a kick ass song but if you're not a fan of those garage/low-production tracks i don't think it'd be for you

There's an even earlier band called glitter penis that Andrew was a part of... Nothing to do with mgmt really but I thought it was worth mentioning.

Edit: Who am I kidding I just like saying glitter penis.

MGMT are...interesting.

Like a lot of people, I really fell in love with Oracular when it came out. I think it was a really great pop record. But you could tell that the group was always kind of pulling in the other direction, and the non hit songs were more psychedelic/experimental rock. In fact, most of the album is like this. So it was always strange to me that so many people loved the album front to back. It's the perfect "hits" album, where you have the really catchy singles, and then the rest is what it is.

For the record, I think the non singles were great (well most of thhem). And I suppose that's because I really like the music they liked. So when the band decided to make Congratulations, I actually loved that album. I liked it more than Oracular. I mean, as an overall album front to back, I liked it more as a cohesive piece. So I was kind of bummed to see the intense backlash some had for that record.

I didn't really care for the third album. And I guess now that time has passed, I feel a bit different on things. I think it was great that the band pursued the music they wanted to make. But it's also weird to see a band "shit" all over their past material. To actively alienate people that liked their old stuff. I'm not saying artists have to appease fans, and make stuff they will like. But it's kind of weird to see a band purposely rage against it.

In the case of Congratulations, I thought the music was great. It wasn't everyone's cup of tea. But to those that liked that genre, it was enjoyable. I kind of feel the band is kind of hit and miss right now. Like they aren't really sure what they are as a band. And now I miss the Oracular songs. So being a fan of this band is kind of weird.

I think in order for a band to pull off distancing themselves from earlier material, they have to pull a Radiohead where each album is incredible - in its new genre/style. A band like that is probably going to alienate people, if each album is uniquely different. But at least it's great in that musical space. If a band starts to hit the brakes and aren't really sure what their style/sound is, then I think that's when it becomes problematic.

Just my 2 cents. I know there is prob some big MGMT fans that loved all their albums. And that's great too.

MGMT is on the radio all the time, are they really considered Indie?

[–]heart_BURNxxxwatercorexxx 13ポイント14ポイント  (46子コメント)

People seem to really get caught up over the loose genre collective of indie versus the independent ethos. I find the best approach is to just let people define indie however they want and not to get too caught up in the labels.

Indie rock has been a descriptor of sound rather than anti-commercialisation for more than a decade. Does a band suddenly stop being indie once they're mainstream?

I fucking LOVE Electruc Feel, one of my all time favorites!! Thank you, I enjoy the Justice and original mashup! :D

Or, you know, Dreams by Beck... Seriously listen to them back to back.

Yes! I noticed this the first time I heard Dreams.

Are you saying they sound similar? I can't listen to them back to back at the moment, but I don't remember them sounding the same at all.

I would say very similar, but not identical.

There is this vine that captures short, yet effective comparison.

Fuck this sub.

Wake ip with this song in my mind, and then this o.o

The making of the music video is an interesting watch in itself too, working the animatronics and all.

alternatively there is this edit. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TSU27PDJlpI&list=PL5U4xEfv0H8-W5tr85EWCXLL4k5JthQHk&index=10 My favorite by far, give it a chance.

This song really made up my highschool years, late in the last decade.

Time to Pretend also really hits home, with the missing my sister, dog, and home.

Not so much the part about doing cocaine, though...

You'll choke on your vomit and that will be the end!

I think the remix is pretty good too!

[–]Purp 0

They're second album was SO much better. The first album is all songs like these, super simple verse/chorus/verse/chorus pop with trite lyrics. I was blown away that the same band could put together something as whole and complex as Congratulations.

I said oooo girl

Ahh. Freshman memories.

My wife and I had our DJ play this at our wedding. For some reason the whole dance floor cleared, and it was only her and I dancing throughout the whole song.

Man, Oracular Spectacular is one of my favorite albums and gave me so much hope for MGMT. Wasn't a big fan of Congratulations though :/

This slow version by Cleast Eatwood is my favorite. Love the echos.

Brings me back to being in high school, blasting this album to and from school every morning and afternoon. I loved Oracular Spectacular.

My buddy and I make sure it's played at every wedding we go to. Just an all around feel good dance tune.

Sweet. This is gonna be perfect for my '00s party this weekend.

Love the song and the group, but indie rock..? Ish don't think so

Listen to their other stuff, and you might reconsider

I mean I love oracular spectacular... Now that I think if it they kind of have an indie vibe, but these use slot of synthesizers in their music, which I would consider more electronic.

Who cares I guess, they're good and make me happy

I gotcha. Indie can be a vibe. And for those who wanna classify them as electronic, that's fine too. Electronic Indie? Maybe it's that some of their more popular songs are more electronic.... but it doesn't really matter.

I swear every time I get into a band I see it on the front page of Reddit a week later. First it was Rancid, now it's MGMT.

I walked into my wedding reception to this song.

All of you guys with great MGMT stories, I feel left out.

I loved Oracular Spectacular, and like most people, was really disappointed by Congratulations. Still, when they played a show near me a few years ago, I had to go. A few of my friends live the band too, so I thought it was going to be a great time.

Nope. The lead singer broke his arm a few days before, and the whole band put on such a disappointing performance. They played mostly their newer stuff, played a boring version of Kids halfway through, and hardly interacted with the crowd. It was like they were there to collect a paycheck.

I'm still glad they put out that first album, I listen to it constantly to this day. But I have mostly bad associations with the band now. Especially since they pretty much confirmed they put out the first record to get a deal, and only did it so they could make the music they really wanted to make, which IMO is much more lackluster.

EDIT: the show was at Artpark in Lewiston, NY in case anyone was curious.

What aspects do you not like of Congratulations? I don't want to be rude, but to me, nothing in that album or their newest one is at all disappointing.

Upvotes to everyone who likes MGMTs lesser known songs! Not that their known stuff is bad or anything...

I went to one of their shows, and the only songs people knew were Kids, TTP, and Electric Feel. Seriously, they have so much more music that you have to give a chance. It actually kind of drives me nuts that people like only the songs heard on the radio, and dismiss everything else.

Disappoints me that this is the song chosen to be posted. Not to say that I don't enjoy it, but virtually the entirety of Congratulations and the rest of Oracular Spectacular is better than all of their well known songs.

I loved their first album, went to a concert after they released their second. It was the worst concert I've ever been to, it sounded like a really bad jam session.

Saw this band play this song at the us open 4 years ago. Time Flys

This is a god awful subreddit. Same shit all the time, never anything new.

This album reminds me of finally plucking up the courage to leave my abusive cunt of an ex wife. Listened to it whilst taking my son home to England for a visit with my parents.

Rock-a-Fire Explosion represent!!!

In the show Mr. Robot on USA, is that an MGMT song at the end of episodes? Sure sounds like it to me.

If you like Electric Feel, you'll probably like Cool Song no 2. It's one of their newer, weirder stuff, but it's awesome.!

I always joke with my wife that this track sounds like porn music.
