They euthanize because breeders keep pumping them out and no one is adopting. Everyone wants a brand new shiny puppy which overflows adoption centers with unwanted animals living in a cell for the rest of their life. They wouldn't need to be euthanize if there was a demand for adoption.

I actually think that this speaks for PETA. I think that they are doing a very important job, even though I don't always agree with their methods. From the article you linked:

I've always wondered, is PETA against fishing? Putting live bait on a hook and pulling it through another animals mouth seems something that protesting would be right up their alley, but I've never seen or heard about them protesting it.

I'd guess the thinking is that animals don't have free will, so for example it would be unfair to accuse a lion of murdering a gazelle, because that's what lions are programmed to do. However, humans are very much in control of themselves and this man knew exactly what he was doing, and that it was completely unnecessary. That makes him much worse than an animal that kills because it doesn't know any better. I still don't agree with the death penalty though.

PETA have never made much sense. They tried to get an aquarium in the UK to stop serving fish n chips in front of the fish in the aquarium because they thought they'd be traumatized. So a dentist kills a lion, he should get the death penalty; that lion probably killed dozens of antelope. By PETA's logic, wasn't the dentist just carrying out justice? Or should the dentist be executed, then the executioner executed, etc. until humanity runs out of executioners?

I'm not trying to say that what the dentist did was right, just jumping on the bandwagon to point out how asinine PETA's logic is.
