Am I a terrible person for downvoting easily Googled questions and not providing a reason?

[–]WorldOneWonAlexander the Great Didn't Real 5ポイント6ポイント  (5子コメント)

I'm apparently in the minority, but I've always disliked when people do this.

I don't know the right word for it, but there is a certain...feeling? When an actual human gives an answer rather than google. The way someone is able to explain something can be multitudes better than googling it or using Wikipedia. It can also be faster if you just thought of a question you want answered on a whim, and don't have time to research it.

I'll use an example: Why did Hitler kill himself?

Well, googling it brings up a Wikipedia article. But ...that's a lot for what should be a simple answer, right? I'm doing XYZ so I can't dive into this, but it looks like something about the Red Army? I guess that's the reason.

But if I ask this question, someone with much more knowledge than me could step in and say "Well, while the Red Army's imminent invasion played a big part, here is another reason, and here is a quote from Hitler himself about it," etc. etc. They have a much better explanation than if they just googled it/looked it up themselves, and can show/tell others a clear explanation themselves instead of what they think they know.

Thanks to different curriculums, schools, etc., people may literally have zero to little knowledge of one subject, and tons about another. Sure I can just tell people to google "What are stocks?" But I bet they will understand better if I explain it myself.

TL;DR, I don't believe in "easily googled answers," someone explaining something is always better.

That's an interesting question though that doesn't require mere fact regurgitation, though. A better example would be "What year did Hitler kill himself?" which gets you a basic "1945" and no further discussion.

[–]WorldOneWonAlexander the Great Didn't Real 1ポイント2ポイント  (1子コメント)

Honestly though? I would still rather them ask that. Better give an easy answer then them googling it and somehow getting it wrong, or finding a bunch of conspiracy blogs saying that Hitler is still alive.

That's just me though

Hmmm. I suppose that makes sense. I don't know that I like the idea of encouraging laziness. Perhaps I'm overestimating the average person's ability to analyze sources.

[–]KaliYugazTenno Heika Banzai 2ポイント3ポイント  (1子コメント)

That "feeling" is probably the relevant context and expertise provided by an actual human who has been studying the topic for years. Wikipedia only usually just provides a trove of facts and speculations that you have to sort through yourself in order to really understand.

[–]WorldOneWonAlexander the Great Didn't Real 2ポイント3ポイント  (0子コメント)

Feeling isn't the word I am looking for, but it was the only word I could come up with. But that's exactly why it just feels better when a human answers for you. They can be clear and concise and give you exactly what you need instead of sifting through all sorts of other stuff that Wikipedia/google would give you

Not everyone may agree with me, but I don't think you actually need to provide a reason when downvoting somebody at all.

[–]Quouarthe Weather History Slayer 3ポイント4ポイント  (0子コメント)

I think sometimes it's good to do so, though, especially if it's a matter of a difference of opinion. I try to engage with people because that's much more constructive than downvotes. It's not always worth the time, true, but when it is, it's a satisfying discussion.

[–]Quouarthe Weather History Slayer 2ポイント3ポイント  (0子コメント)

Not at all.

No, people that are that bloody lazy should never be rewarded. The stick! The stick! The stick!

My friends took my husband and me to Carowinds on Tuesday. Carowinds is home to some of the biggest, fastest roller coasters on the East Coast, but otherwise has no real personality to speak of. They're actually closing down the only roller coaster that actually had a theme - Thunder Road, which had parallel tracks that would race down the North Carolina-South Carolina border - which makes me sad. But you know what? I still like going to the amusement park with friends. I like that I got to see them, hang out with them, and scream with them. It was a good way to see each other, and I'm glad we went.

New bookshelf all built and happy!

Last one unceremoniously collapsed on me. Now I just need to buy all those ebooks I got in print so I can fill it out more...

Ignore the Ayn Rand. It's merely holding a temporary place as I find a trash can big enough for it.

Saw the books in half so that they will fit. What could go wrong?

The mirror threw me at first. It was like "okay, I have two copies of a lot of books, but I don't make a thing about it."

There are a couple of books placed upside down. This makes my librarian senses tingle uncomfortably.

Oh hey. These threads are a thing.

Last day of summer school. Then I go back to working in two labs.

Oh hey, I haven't been in one of these threads for like... forever...

The problem is that I usually posted in them at work (I AM BAD I KNOW) and we've been having all-day training lately, so I actually had to pretend to focus. ;)

I'm still watching DBZ, I finished up the English DBZ Kai stuff which only goes through the end of the Cell Games, so now I'm into the original for the last bit. I've quickly come to realize that basically all of DBZ boils down to:

Everyone else: Saiyan, don't do this thing.

Saiyan: IMMA DO THE THING

Everyone else: No seriously, don't do the thing.

Saiyan: IMMA DO THE THING *does the thing while everyone else facepalms*

EDIT: also the next episode of DBZ Abridged is coming out either today or tomorrow, and I am excite.

Im wayching like 18 shows this summer season.

Are you going to go see Battle of Gods? It comes out next week in limited release, I think I might go.

[–]alynnidalarThere needs to be cooked is the rice. - /u/badhistory_ss 0ポイント1ポイント  (1子コメント)

Probably not, I haven't seen any of the movies yet actually. I want to get done with the main series first.

Actually I don't even know if I'm going to watch GT yet, so who knows what the future holds?

[–]SinlessSinnerSinning 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

I think the movie is standalone? But you don't really need to waste your time with GT, it works very hard to retroactively ruin DB and DBZ. Then again, it could be argued DBZ retroactively ruins DB.

This week I have been mostly listening to Jesse Jackson crossed with trip-hop.

Otherwise there's nothing much to report.

So yesterday I decided to rant at someone very passive aggressively about college major choices. It's something I think about a lot and know a lot about because I took part in the M3 challenge earlier in the year, and we did a shit ton of research for that https://np.reddit.com/r/AskReddit/comments/3f1ck5/serious_what_is_something_youve_done_that_would/ctkzoq3

It was cathartic.

I've also decided that I am going to embark on the literary journey that is reading Remembrance of Things Past by Marcel Proust. I have always heard great things about it, so I bought all three volumes on Prime Day and started reading. My goal is to finish Volume I by Summer 2016. Wish me luck.

I'm either going to go to The Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum (TBBTSHM as the locals call it) or the LBJ Library this weekend. Still deciding, anyone have a suggestion?

New job which is actually a lot of fun. But there are some labor law and scope of practice issues that mean it'll probably be a "6 months of experience for resume material" position rather than longer term.

It is so hot. This is the one week of the year when you actually need air conditioning in New England. I'm making do with fans and lots of water and not moving more than absolutely necessary. :(

In other news only one group project between me and no more school. I turned one wall of my room into a giant outline for the book I've been wanting to write, but waited until my graduation was secure. So close, I can almost taste it.

I spent the last six days (well, four, but two for travel there and back from my home in NW Iowa) in Branson, Missouri with my mom's family for my grandparents' 45th anniversary. Aside from the incredible humidity (really made me miss Iowa humidity, doubt I'll ever complain about that again), it was a pretty fun time. I feel like Branson would be an interesting place to read about; Wikipedia tells me they didn't start doing shows until about 1960, but now they're famous for it and have a load of theaters and tourist attractions.

We went to the Sight and Sound theater to see their Jonah play. I'm not a Christian, but holy shit that was incredible. The part everyone remembers is the car-sized whale prop that "swims" around the theater, but everything was very well-done.

To top it off, we found out my aunt is gonna have a baby in March. She's only six years older than me and I'll be 21 when it's born, so that's kinda funny to me, but it's still exciting!

BITESIZED BAD HISTORY

Its not worth doing a full post over, since it's your basic /r/lewronggeneration tripe. But please someone help me make fun of this guy, who somehow makes a living by what comes out of his brain.
