Speed this up about .5x and it will be perfect. This is some quality shit.

Speeding it up by .5x is actually halving the speed.

He's not making it 0.5x. they mean adding .5 on to the 1. Therefore 1.5 times. See how they say "speed this up .5x". He means 150% not 50%

Adding the "X" at the end you are saying "times." .5 times. Which means to multiply. What you, and OP, mean to say is "add .5 speed to this." Words mean things guy, better learn the basics, especially math.

But how do I get my drink to be twice as cold?

Wait til the mountains are blue

[–]Mompy 3

It's "speed it up by .5 times," which would be the same as "make it .5 times more than the current speed." It's the same as saying to "speed it up by 50%," because that's the equivalent of .5 * the initial number.

It isn't a very pretty way of putting it, but the meaning's obvious. And there's no need to be such a twat about it, even if you were right.

I think he should do 30 speed

Thank you for being a perfect example of Dunning-Kruger.

So increasing by 50% means halving now? I don't think so.

That would be 1.5x the speed, not 0.5x.

But he doesnt say "make it 0.5x the speed", he says "speed it up [by] about 0.5x times.", meaning to add 0.5x its current speed.

I guess it depends on what you mean when you say .5X. Mathematically speaking "X" means "times" or to "multiply." So if you take the base speed, 1, and multiple it by .5, you have made the speed .5. However, I know in today's world we like to make shit up as we go like gender so I can understand why you would want to make up math as you go to. Because feelz > realz.

Mathematically speaking, .5X 1 is .5 as you said. But increasing 1 by .5x is 1.5. as the original comment said....

what if I told you that you can speed something up by less than 100%

Then he'll have to double it by twice the amount afterwards.

double it by twice the amount

2*2*.5 = 2

double it by twice the amount

Does this make sense? Can you quarter by triple the amount?

Well slow it down by 0.5x the speed. Will that work?

Damn you people, whether or not you can argue the way he said it means 150% or 50% doesn't make a damn bit of difference, we knew what he meant by saying 'speed this up'
