You are missing the point. It's not a matter of increasing tensions, it's a matter of the effectiveness of how you do it. You can increase tensions more effectively through peaceful protest. By not being peaceful the message is completely lost. The initiative is lost. This is why people who are trying to stop the protest, do so by sending out people to encourage violence. We've seen this time and time again. The most difficult thing to do is to have control in the face of severe injustice. But if people have the willingness, the strength and the courage to do that the results will be tremendous. Change will take place. The world would take notice. Right now the world sees ignorant rioters. The type of people who would behave in such a way to warrant violent acts from the authorities. We are still feeling the ill effects of the Baltimore riots due to the violence that took place there. You don't have to look any further than social media to see that. Martin Luther King and Ghandi changed the course of history through peaceful civil disobedience. Occupy changed the conversation in this country through peaceful civil disobedience.

Right. So judging by your comment it's long overdue that something needs to change. In order to make that change we need to do something effective. Rioting and looting is not effective. It tramples on the hard work of others who are fighting everyday to do something to truly make a difference. It fuels racism and these things continue to happen and continue to get worse despite there being body cameras. Police and members of the community view the rioters and looters as people who deserve to die at the hands of the police over the mildest possible infraction. Fox News replays the violent acts all day long and the death of another unarmed black man at the hands of the police gets lost and racism gets fueled to millions of viewers. You must understand this.

Please, don't give me that bullshit straw man about Jim Crow. As if there's no fucking in between. We accomplished so much in the 60's through peaceful protests and now being peaceful is acting like some fucking sell out??? Get a grip dude.

I already gave you concrete examples of how it is.

You want another? The suffragettes used to smash windows of politicians. The gay rights movement started with the Stonewall riots. After the 1992 riots the LAPD instituted wide ranging reforms and made itself more accountable to the public. Rioting in Egypt took down Hosni Mubarak. The 1999 WTO protests and riots in Seattle sparked the international anti-globalizaion movement that came close to destroying the IMF and has turned every free trade summit into an expensive, wasteful, and publicly despised clusterfuck ever since.

I can give more examples. Examples upon examples.

The fact is when shit hits the fan then people pay attention. They are forced to ask why these things happen. And in being forced to do that they need to understand the people clashing with police and breaking windows.

And that is why you saw an entire movement erupt from the unrest in Ferguson. Because people saw and listened.

You're right, some people do the opposite. They hate. But those people are totally fucking meaningless and in terms of cost/benefit Ferguson got a tremendously good deal. The entire world knows what happened in that town. The Unites States government was humiliated and multiple public officials were forced out of office.

They won.

The complaining football dads in the suburbs didn't.

It fuels racism and these things continue to happen and continue to get worse despite there being body cameras.

Because the entire legal system is a rigged, unjust, mess.

Every cop I've ever met was a far-right suburbanite without a single meaningful concept of human rights. Who gives a shit what they think? They beat up rioters and peaceful protesters alike. Violence has nothing to do with it, they're a force of political repression.

As for the right wing in general, like I said, conservatives are going to hate protesters no matter what. Let them. At the very worst it exposes the kind of twisted, racist, logic these people operate under.

America was burning throughout the entire decade. Bombs were going off. People died. Rioters destroyed multiple cities.

According to what version of history? The white-washed garbage you get fed in grade school that totally ignores or even outright devalues the contribution of militant liberation efforts? Bhagat Singh and Malcolm X were equally important and held in equally high regard as their contemporary counterparts Gandhi and MLK.

In any case, protests aren't about "spreading the message" or "being heard"-- we already know what the problem is, there isn't much of a debate on it; and the fact you appeal to your position of privilege (because lets face it: if you were living through the same conditions, you'd probably be a lot more relaxed on the question of property destruction as a legitimate form of political expression) means that even still no one is being heard.

In fact, one could argue that the shake-up in Baltimore city government and the charges against the officers would never have come if people weren't out in the streets expressing their outrage.
