Physical wellbeing has positive effects on mental wellbeing.

very good point. I've heard reputable people say "if you could put the benefits of exercise in a pill, it would be the #1 antidepressant by a country mile". It should be OK to flaunt & talk about those results more too :)

Sadly it's not true for everyone. There is something broken in me that I feel worse mentally after exercise. I do it anyway because I need to, but for some reason I don't get the endorphin rush or something because I have never once felt mentally better from exercise.

I guess that would be a little ironic, because when you're mentally healthy you have no need to prove yourself to others.

That did cross my mind, and is a bloody good point. I guess I assumed that like the gym, no one is ever completely satisfied with how they look, so maybe no one would be satisfied with how they are mentally as well. Continuously posting "progress" instead of accepting they are good enough.

No one's ever completely satisfied with how their entire body looks. What if Arnold Schwarzenegger had a tiny pecker?

It would still mean he accepted who he was physically and put in the effort to accept his body physically.

Arnie having a tiny pecker wouldn't take anything away from his legacy, because his legacy was never about having a big pecker.

Explain the rise of Facebook then?

Many people are not mentally healthy enough to have no need to prove themselves to others.

People are not mentally healthy.

Considering "selfish" culture is so prominent, I'd say yeah, most people aren't too mentally healthy. Everyone has validation issues. Everyone.

That is absolutely not true, the statement here posits mentally healthy like an overall situtation for a person without sad bieffects.

One can be perfectly mentally healthy and post their success/failure, proving oneself to others is one of the most normal and perfectly mentally healthy things to do. We all need social belonging, that we in our struggle with this sometimes take it too far, is something else.

But time to time saying I did x or y is not something that people should look at their feed and think them as mentally unhealthy.

Them: "Therapist selfie! Just did 50 minutes on the shrink, my emotions are feelin' SWOLL!"

Me: "What if I told you... you can go to a therapist without telling everyone on facebook about it"

hhhahahahahahahah I love how you predict that we will become just as annoyed with over-share as we do with gym peeps. thanks for the comment!

"often occupied by someone who you wouldn't want to talk to for longer than 40 seconds". Wow that's a shallow thing to say. All the people I meet in the gym are friendly.

[–]Wenjaman [

I find people who say things like this to be insecure assholes who are exactly what they're complaining about.

So you're calling me an "insecure asshole" because I think that people in the gym are usually friendly. Okay. I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess that your fat and I triggered you.

Depends on the person. I have a friend who got really big into weight lifting. Now the joke among my friends is that he's Mac from its always sunny because he's always talking about his body mass, talking about other dudes body mass, and has REALLY creepy attitudes towards women.

Going to the gym doesn't make you a bad person. I hit up the gym. Lots of people hit up the gym. But there's no doubt that lots of narcissistic people are being directed to the gym via pua and Gq articles for some not so mentally healthy reasons.

Given, you are right there mate. I guess I was exaggerating for effect, also I have a lot of personal trainer friends who I find are quite difficult to talk about things that are not their muscles. So just my perception I guess. But yeap too right could have been a bit fairer!

Well for the record I think it would be nice if people worked on mental issues as much their physique. Do you think things like contemplating philosophy or art counts just as much or are you talking about working through psychological difficulties?

I guarantee you there are people who overshare about their therapist visits on Facebook.

haha I bet, but imagine if it was viewed with the same positivity as muscle progress was, instead of the labels of overshare and neediness. Thanks for the comment!

Lol I hate "muscle progress" pictures too, but I see what you're getting at.

Why would we want people to be mentally stable? Then they'd get less gains.

Except for the fact that 70% of North America is overweight.

I would say even more could benefit from some mental exercise too!

People who have excessive garbage on their bodies (ie fat) are in a sense mentally ill because they have not been able to fix their physical problems with a mental plan put into action.

To be fair, I know people with different and various forms of mental illness, social media is quite often their outlet. It's not quite the paralel to gym selfies, but they do discuss it and their problems quite openly, or how they have delt with something that day on twitter and such, to get things off their chest

And thats cool! social networks should be just that, a social place where your networks can help you out. If everyone saw those posts and thought they were allgood, then my point has been made. Cheers for the comment

This exists, you just hear about them far less often...

"I hate how ungrateful bitches always go for the mentally sound douchebags without giving us incapacitated lunatics a chance! Then they complain that they're no nice guys anymore."

HAHAH they just needa give us a chance!!!

Hey OP. I've got some muscle. Not much, but more than you. What are you tryin' to say? You say I couldn't last more than 40 seconds in a conversa

Point has been raised and I recognise I was pretty quick to type something untrue. Many people who look good are also well rounded interesting people. I was generalising and focusing on the negative minority.

I really love the concept, it would help fight mental health stimga

I don't. I already don't care about people's workout, I don't need to hear about their mental progress too.

but in a world where people feels its waaay more OK to share their body progress, it should be just as OK to share mind progress :)

I agree! Socially the world is going through so much change eventually stigma will be reduced as generations come up who are more accepting. I have reason to believe stigmas on the way down :)

This is awesome.

Thank you so much! Appreciate the comment. One day it will happen and mental health will be as important socially!

OP are you saying that people who go to the gym often have a bad personality? I hope youre not being judgemental like that and I just understood it the wrong way.

I have a lot of personal trainer friends and find it hard to talk about anything else other than their own muscles. I guess thats where it came from but obviously I know a lot of wonderful people who frequent the gym too.

Opened with an incredibly judging statement, did not read.

Yeah, I thought that as well. OP is missing the point of fitness for a lot of people.

What a doucebag

If he judges people by their appearance so quick, I wouldn't want to talk to OP for more than 40 seconds

Sometimes physical health aids in mental health. Running keeps me sane, but then again, I don't post selfies after my runs like all of my wife's friends do.

I'd say physical health always aids mental health! & exactly you dont have to share about it, but the ones who did, wouldnt be cool if it was just as acceptable-ish to post about your mental gains.

We are going to need some super braggy bumper stickers.

23.6 years of therapy?

Mental Marathon?

hahahahahahah good god im sure i would have fixed all my problems by then! But running a marathon you seem to create more haha

Physical appearance is tangible, easily recognized, and measurable.

Mental health is none of those things.

But it would nice. :)

Great point. We are still so young with social media, eventually it would be doable!

[–]ig_88s_stepfather [スコア非表示]  (0子コメント)

@Dolph_Hitler Finally figured out the cause of all my problems. Even feeling inspired to write a book! #GetMotivated #DamnJews

Physical health leads to better mental health. It doesn't really work the other way around.

There are websites to benefit 'brain power' (like Luminosity) and some websites that folks 'listen' and try to be positive and helpful as well...

but then how would women take advantage of men?

This is sort of how I feel about mindfulness meditation, I consider it to be an exercise in my workout routine to get those cortical gainz.

The pursuit of physical fitness requires just as much mental development and training. It requires one to be humble, honest, and above his past so that he may create his future.

Keep in mind the body is a reflection of the mind. People who strive for a different physique are also aiming to change their thinking.

Ive read a lot in the comments about how they go hand in hand which is so 100% true.

OP, you do realize there are a lot of gym goers who don't do it for likes nor ever post on Instagram, but simply because they want to be the best they can be. "Mens sana in corpore sano"

It would as annoying as the gym addicts. Don't get me wrong, that's cool if people like to go to the gym as it's cool if people realise they need help for any kind of mental issue. But...no...definitely no. Even though, as stated in the title, it's way more important. It's a shame we're not more aware of mental health than physical health in general.

I think APC0243's comment below summed it up nicely, eventually it would become just as annoying because with social media, anything that's too overdone ends up looking basic as fuuuuuck. But tbh I'd rather that be celebrated, as in people more concious of their mental traits and flaws, instead of bulking.

[–]Infectt [

Yep, totally agree with you, that's what I wanted to say when saying "It would as annoying as the gym addicts". Poorly said I admit it.

You cool bro you cool. Thanks for the comment man! :)

Let's start a trend!

Off to the Mental Health Gym! Haven't been since last week! So pumped!

Hard out! It's what we should be celebrating but what can I say my lizard brain loves tight buns.

Yeah but a jacked id would have you humping literally everything

it would, still a better outcome though
