Things are going well. My blog is doing well, getting regular traffic from around the world. I just made a new big post on my blog (the "Colonies, Ships, and Pirates" blog) about life in the Bahamas during the peak period for piracy: "The Strongest Man Carries the Day" Life in New Providence, 1716-1717 (Click Here).

Find out all kinds of interesting information about life in this pirate stronghold during it's peak years. Learn about the geography of the port, where the pirates came from, what structures they lived in, what women did in the settlement, and more. The beginning of the article includes a convenient click-to-jump table of contents.

I'm waiting to hear from a few of the local community colleges to finalize my employment as an adjunct. While the pay isn't great, I can finally use my degree for something! I may regret it later when I actually start teaching, but right now I'm excited!

Also, go Mexico! I'm glad they won in convincing fashion so that the haters can't accuse them colluding with the refs to hand them the Gold Cup. So overall, good weekend \o/

Graduated nearly a year ago, still can't find a job and I've been thinking of applying for a History MA. What have other people's experiences of post-grad history been like?

I'm in Northumberland. It's cold and raining and I'm at a disappointing fancy mansion that's been stripped bare. That said, it's still interesting seeing an 18th/19th Century house borrowing really heavily from Greco-Roman architecture. Speaking of Romans, Hadrian's wall is near here, which is pretty cool.

Does anybody know if 'The Complete History of China' is any good? (By JAG Roberts) I've been reading it for a bit, but I'm not a historian so I'm not sure if it's good or bad history.

Started taking walks with a friend, which is great. Aerobic exercise has always been easier for me when I'm talking to someone, and it's not nearly as boring as walking by myself. So, I've been able to push myself to go on much longer walks than I had been doing by myself.

This friend is also part of my gaming group, which hasn't done much since I was in high school, but we're talking about starting up DND again. Probably 5e, since I hear good things and want to try it out. Gonna have rotating DMs since we all want to play and also DM. Seems like in a couple weeks I might be back with stories from our table (which of course are only really entertaining if you're also at the table, but, hey, I'm sure you folks can suffer them)

I've got everyone anyone could need to start 5e except the group :/. It looks great, Acquisitions Inc., Critical Role and Crit Juice all make it look simple to pick up and play.

I kicked a dude out of my place for drunkenly pissing on my wall and he went full fucking jihad on me.

I've been bleeding friends lately. Summer in NYC will do that to you. Also I wanna start going to a Hindu temple but I have no idea what that entails. Any Hindus here with tips on how not to look like a clueless gora when I show up?

[–]ciderczarUnrepentant Ouiaboo 4ポイント5ポイント  (0子コメント)

I'm not Hindu, but I did see Temple Of Doom eight years ago, AMA.

Wear long sleeves and long pants, be sure to leave your shoes in the designated area and ritually wash your hands before going inside, and try not to be too loud. Other than that, basically just copy what everyone else is doing. Usually the statues are organized in a particular way, and you just make a full round through the temple, praying before each one.

Prayer itself is mostly just putting one's hands together, but you will also see people prostrate themselves on the ground and touch their head to the floor 3 times. Also, during prayer to Ganesh it is customary to cross one's arms in front of the head and knock the forehead with one's knuckles 3 times for good luck. Don't point your fingers at the statues, it is generally considered disrespectful.

At some point, you might see a tray with red ash, white ash, water, and perhaps some sweets/fruits. The white ash is meant to be taken with the 3 middle fingers and applied accross the forehead (rub the excess on the arms or neck). The red ash is literally the stereotypical red dot thing; take it with the 4th finger and apply to the forehead after the white ash. The priest will hand out the sweets and dispense the water with a spoon, be sure to accept it with the right hand only.

During a puja (ritual service), remain seated and listen to the prayer songs. The priest will eventually pass around a plate with a ritual fire. This is not a tithe collecting plate, it is for worship. Take both hands, bring them close to the fire, then bring them close to your eyes, and do this 3 times.

Edit: expanded!

I always heard 'circumambulation/circumambulating' in Indian stuff for this.

So I found this book. How does it sound? Especially since it's a modern work rooted in traditional stuff.

[–]KaliYugazTenno Heika Banzai 2ポイント3ポイント  (1子コメント)

Far above my level of knowledge in this subject, definitely! But it sounds interesting and I like the fact that Eastern philosophy is becoming academically relevant again.

Sadly, I don't think works like this are gonna be common in the West. How many people even in India know of North Bengal University for starters?

[–]ciderczarUnrepentant Ouiaboo 2ポイント3ポイント  (0子コメント)

I need to work circumambulation into my day-to-day vocabulary.

[–]martini29 2ポイント3ポイント  (2子コメント)

Okay so pray with two hands except for Ganesha, get the ash and put it on my head, seems simple enough. Fucking hell I wish I was still going out with that Hindu girl so I would seem less odd.

Are there specific days to do all this or is it a come as you like thing?

[–]KaliYugazTenno Heika Banzai 1ポイント2ポイント  (1子コメント)

Okay so pray with two hands except for Ganesha

No, you pray with two hands for him too. The knuckles thing is just an extra!

Are there specific days to do all this or is it a come as you like thing?

The pujas will be at particular times, and special pujas will be on particular days or holidays, so if you come just to pray freely at those times you may find that you are not able to. Otherwise, free prayer can be done at any time.

Also note that not all temples will do things the exact same way. I tried to give a general overview that is applicable to all mainstream Hindu temples (in specific sect temples like Hare Krishna or Swaminaryan ones, the worship is much different).

Last week of work before I go to grad school for my MPA program in the American South. After seeing Minions, I was thinking of doing a write up of the movie. After thinking about it a little more, doing something like that would confirm I have no soul. I also saw Ant Man, which was really good. Baskin Robbins always finds out.

Well, cooked outside a bit this weekend. Smoked a couple of chickens, made a dutch oven lasagna, and fried up some corn dogs and onion rings. Had a few drinks, filled the boy's pool up so we could play for a bit, and did a bit of work in the garden.

Sprained my ankle pretty badly, so I'm hobbling around with a trekking pole.

Life is good, but is slightly inhibited by the inability to walk right.

I had intended to make the Reek Sunday pilgrimage to Croagh Patrick yesterday. The hostel I'd booked gave my room to someone else for a reason I couldn't manage to wring out of them. I ended up spending the night at a friend's house in Enniskillen at their very generous offer, and I was so angry with myself that I wouldn't get to complete the pilgrimage, I felt like I was letting the J-man down.

But as it happens, the whole thing got cancelled! A couple of people who chanced it in the wee hours of the morning caught hypothermia, and An Garda Síochána and the Church called the thing off for the first time in living memory.

So I guess I was lucky, in a roundabout sort of way.

When did it stop being Theon Sunday?

[–]UltachThe Scottish Enlightenment is Nationalist Propaganda 2ポイント3ポイント  (3子コメント)

In all seriousness I have no idea why it's called 'Reek', in Irish the mountain is called Cruach Phádraig and I don't see what kind of connection those two terms have.

So, camping this weekend was a ton of fun. I'm only out of town for most of today, then I have to return home. I would much prefer to stay. I also watched Interstellar for the first time last night, with my friends. It was amazing. I wasn't expecting it to tug quite so fiercely or look so beautiful.

But now that the weekend fun is almost over I have to prepare to return to my job. Hopefully I will be able to arrange one last fun weekend before summer ends and the Fall semester begins.

Yesterday I went to the beach, but the water was too cold. Weather was alright though...it still would have been nice if the water had been warm though.

[–]phasv2 1ポイント2ポイント  (0子コメント)

I've always been used to the warm waters of the gulf, so I thought when I went to San Diego I'd be able to have some fun in the water. The cold reality of California water sure ruined that for me.

It was alright. Saw my brother for the last time before he treks off to Colorado. Tried to make chicken tikka masala but I couldn't find garam masala down the shops and I was too cheap/lazy to make my own, so I substituted in madras curry powder. We'll see how well that went tonight.

I've learned there are a lot of afrocentrists on Instagram that advocate for African origins of the Olmec.

I also helped a friend do a cave art painting and stencil activity for kids at the museum. We recorded data on ~75 people who did hand stencils. Part of my friend's thesis is on dominate hand use for cave stencils and whether left handed stencils really do indicate dominate right hand use.

So the Dutch Rijksmuseum (basically the national museum) is having a special event because of the Amsterdam Gay Pride Festival , and they're marketing it with a big portrait of King William II, who is generally considered to have been gay. Historically that's almost always been cast in a negative light, with a lot of rumours about licentiousness, bestiality and other types of nonsense.

Due to the Kingdom existing 200 years, there's been a lot more attention towards the first three monarchs and a slight re-evaluation of their place in historiography. For a long time the three Wiliams have been either ignored or derided (not entirely without reason, I might add). William II has always been viewed the most positively because of his part in democratisation, but it's nice to see another aspect of his person that's long been undeservedly maligned receive a bit more respect. It also helps a lot in creating awareness for historical LGBT people, I'd say.

I thought William I was a big deal? Is he ignored or derided too?

[–]GothicEmperorJoseph Smith is in the Kama Sutra 1ポイント2ポイント  (0子コメント)

Ignored not so much due to the 200-year celebrations/events, but despite his reputation for improving business and trade (King Merchant, which in the Netherlands is generally a positive nickname) there's still the issue of his constitutional position. King William I was an absolute monarch and he had no intention of relinquishing that power. Historically he was also criticised for creating the conditions for the Belgian revolt (and his reluctance to give up the fight when it became unwinnable), as well as re-marrying to a Walloon countess after his abdication.

It's important to note that though King William I may have been the first king, he's not at all the Father of the Fatherland Prince William I (ie. William the Silent) was. He has always remained a 'big deal'.

I've shifted to a new house.

Amongst other things, the wall sockets don't seem to work. My phone chargers disconnect every five seconds making charging impossible.

Like the prongs on the plug are falling out? If it's that, the socket is probably old and worn out, which is a pretty easy fix.

I was in Portland, OR and I bought a used book that was written by a WW1 French general to provide an introduction to a "modern" military for the newly-entered Americans. I opened it up and found that it had actually been autographed by the author! Very excited to read it although it hasn't aged as well as I'd hoped there's some warping and maybe water damage. I'm in the process of photographing the whole thing I may put it online if it isn't already available elsewhere

This'll sound heartless of me, but why do we have summer vacation? My younger brother has literally done absolutely nothing useful with his life for 3 whole months outside of us forcing him to do a bit of math practice.

You can't expect to become a star athlete if you don't keep in condition off season. You can't expect to become a virtuoso pianist if you literally stop practicing for 3 months out of a year. So how do we expect kids to become excellent critical thinkers if we let them stop thinking for the whole summer? It just proves that Americans don't care about knowledge or education, and don't expect anything meaningful from their children.

[–]40kfreak 1ポイント2ポイント  (0子コメント)

It's kindof an outdated farm thing as I recall, as a college student I don't mind because I use the summer to work a real job so I can spend all that money on booze extracurriculars
