Frankly, that argument is shit. And it's been spewed by the Red block for decades. 'you have no right to criticize our invasion of eastern europe because of iraq' was a brilliant one. and before that it was because there are civil rights abuses. (not that there's an invasion of eastern europe. not that dissidents are killed or tortured. not that the power structure feeds on the tragedy of the people).

The simple reality is that the US has spent vast sums of money and manpower trying to change the narratives in our society and heal the wounds of the past. China has a monolithic power structure, answerable to no one, which pathologically obfuscates and deflects any oversight of its agenda which is, as their reach increases, similarly more abusive, more exploitive and more aggressive. Russia's institutions mirror it. As do North Korea's.

Read 1984. Explain away the absence of objective analysis of Tienanmen in your history books as the function of a free society. Or the stroke clusters in the plastic houses of Hunan. Or the execution and imprisonment of pacifist Tibetan monks.

When China's society begins to behave like a responsible actor, the world will view and treat it as such. Until then, you can put out this tepid propaganda all you want - no one believes it and no one has an appetite for it.
