Everything is a nail to a hammer.

Non-Idiom version: They spend so much time in a paranoid little bubble that any dissent/ideological impurity is an attack on them, personally (in their mind). When you're indoctrinated (and this isn't just SJWS, it's anyone who believes too strongly in an ideology; see a lot of Christians, another great example of people on the same "team" eating each other) you lose the ability to see alternate viewpoints - your ideology is you. No dissent, ever.

How about this?: extremists gain status among other extremists by being more extreme. They're just the leftwing secular version of religious kooks I grew up with. Think about the character of the "church lady." These people play a constant game of "holier than thou." It's easier to be holier than the sinners...but they want to be holier than each other...to find some way to put some damning interpretive spin on something some other allegedly good person did. If we're all in the cult, and I can make up some nonsense about how something you did is naughty, then I show myself to be the purest of the pure / holiest of the holy / SJW-iest of the SJWs. The very "logic" of extremism--especially when combined with something like "call-out culture"--continually drives everything in a more extreme direction.
Maybe something like that?

Look at what happened to Ian Miles Cheong when he realized the error of his ways and the craziness off his SJW crowd. He apologized (and it did seem like a pretty honest apology) to #GamerGate supporters and the Social Justice crowd shredded him on Twitter, calling him a traitor.

Although they will often ignore poor behavior on the part of a fellow believer, SJWs also seem to relish attacking those "in the fold".

It shows they are the true-believers and are worthy of the Inner Party.

It becomes more and more obvious that 1984, given the political background of Oceania, is a harrowing glimpse into what would happen if those in the Frankfurt School were to achieve their goals.

The Frankfurt School was the proto SJW cesspit.

Status jockying. The mob always needs a target, otherwise it loses momentum. But it's hard to get riled up about your actual enemies, because they're far away, unreceptive, or don't pose an immediate threat to your social status (e.g. patriarchal Islam). All the conservatards have been purged from your life, so you don't actually have to deal with them most of the time. But the mob still needs a target, because it's what binds the group together and provides that exhilarating feeling of being part of something.

You don't want to become the next target, so the most proactive thing to do is try and paint a target on someone else. So you need to show your social justice bonifides, you need to irrevocably demonstrate how superdupersocjus you really are. What better way, after all, to flush out enemy agents--the pretenders and hyopcrites--who are hiding within the politically correct fold, than to keep raising the cost of membership by ratcheting up the absurdities to ever greater heights?

The absurd beliefs are like the peacock's tail--useless and ridiculous, but a conspicuous and hard to fake signal. In this case, what’s being signaled is ideological allegiance rather than virility, but the principle is the same.

The movement becomes an end in itself, for it must keep moving or it will die. It doesn't even matter which direction its moving, or even if it comes full circle. So saying 'There is only one race, the human race' is now a microaggression, and racism somehow becomes the cause of, and the solution to, all life's problems, and intersectional feminism is apparently now the grand unifying theory of everything.

They eat their own because the revolution must never end, even if it just keeps revolving on the same axis. Moloch wins.

Hypocrisy, real or perceived, gets people going. Especially for people you hold to higher standards. It's one thing for a random stranger to do something shitty. It's another thing for someone, especially a public figure, who claims to be good, or who is perceived to be good, do something shitty.

It's why people love attacking homophobic pastors who get caught fucking dudes, etc.

They love attacking people in the fold because Tumblr social justice is a cult mind.
