I'd put it a bit differently..

I'm hindu by birth, and there's literally no way of being a Hindu without cherry picking. The permutations of local traditions, individual or familial interpretations, spiritual and rational inclinations, etc. decide how one's Hinduism will manifest. In fact, I will go ahead and claim that probably no two Hindus are the same. My parents have always encouraged cherry picking, as in, following something only if it is relevant today and discarding the stale stuff. My cousin on the other hand is totally opposite, and on my third hand, people are being killed in parts of India for marrying someone of the same astrological markers (gotra).

You can't follow the Bhagwat Geeta, the Ashtavakra Geeta, and the Manu Smriti at the same time. They are extremely different in content and delivery. You have to discard at least one, and probably two.

Europe was a bunch of warring factions in the first place, and the power games that ensued made you leave Europe and explore remote lands for plundering resources. You, of all people, should be respectful of inter-state warfare, because that's what made Europe stronger. If India owes you her 'Unity', you owe India the huge economic leverage you gained from exploiting this extremely rich land. Indians formed one of the largest voluntary armies in the world wars, 1 million in WW1 and around 2.5 million in WW2, fact which which have an impact in the larger scheme of things.

As an Indian, I don't expect reparation, because the world isn't fair. What amazes me the most is that some British folks still believe that the British Raj had a net positive impact on India. I guess they need to revisit their history lessons, or borrow books which have an Indian POV..

I agree....abortion is the best solution for everyone, if the woman's safety is guaranteed through the procedure..in general, parents wanting to abort a kid, but forced to not abort it, are seldom in a position to provide good parenting, which means the kid us raised in a neglected or abusive environment. Abortion is not opted by parents who will welcome and raise the kid well. I do not understand why anyone other than the child bearer and her doctor have a say in this decision.

News channels are run by corporations, and the driving force is supply demand.... people love to read about how filthy India and China are. Rape at college dorms is much, much more common in the US than it is in India because of differences in housing and mingling cultures of college going youth. A study concluded that 1 in 5 women in the US have faced some form of sexual abuse. This does not happen in a healthy society, no matter how much we try to explain it away. Truth is, we are all equally capable of being truly filthy humans, and truly noble too.

Same in pune. Make brt. Wait for months till some babu inaugurates it. Plan flyover and scrap brts corridor.

The first brt bus stop had a phone booth, water dispenser, newspaper stand and what not.....for one week after it was inaugurated. Then it vanished forever. News was that 1 bus stop costs 2 crores (i doubt this). I can't even imagine how much money has been wasted/pocketed through brts.

I do not consider the act of 'contemplation of nothingness' as religious, and I do not see myself saying so in my previous comment either! Meditation, contemplation, and even satori-like experiences are not restricted to religion. On a starry, clear night, I feel an extreme closeness with the Universe as a whole and a sense of detachment from my petty worries, an experience which I do not mind calling 'spiritual'.
