The best example would be ISIS, personally after reading the Koran their actions fall in accordance with jihad, they are following guidelines, are they cherrypicking? I believe so, but find me a religion that doesn't.

Well before you even ask your question I gave you not one answer but three. The major problem of this subreddit is that discussion and debate simply derive from Abrahamic religions which all have holy books that people cherrypick from. But what about Asian religions and philosophies? Why is "religion" considered and discussed as simply Abrahamic when all in all it is a philosophy of ideas which creates different groups.

No I go to a different one about 20 minutes away. Thanks a lot for your donation it means a lot. I've been there enough times to hold sentimental value and ever since the shooting both of our communities have really joined together. Thank you :)

Waheguru. Guru Arjan Dev Ji, fifth guru of the Sikhs, compiled the first edition of the The Guru Granth Sahib called Pothi Sahib. This was a compilation of hymns by the 5 gurus, saints, and bards created in 1604. The 4 gurus wrote hymns but they were never collected into one text. The final version was finished in 1708 by the tenth guru Guru Gobind Singh Ji. He completed this by adding the hymns of his father Guru Tech Bahadur Sahib ji, also the ninth guru. Guru Gobind Singh Ji said that he would become the last human guru and the finished Guru Granth Sahib Ji would be the everlasting guru. The guru Granth Sahib Ji is treated as such, when you walk into a gurdwara, a Sikh house of worship, people will bow and pray to the holy book. Unlike the bible or q'uran it is a guru not a book. These other holy books can be handheld and burned and disgraced as books. To disgrace the Guru Granth Sahib Ji would be to disgrace A Guru. But it is not God. It is the word of saints, bards, and gurus. It is written entirely in beautiful poetry. You could call it divine inspiration.

In sikhism God is called Waheguru/Vaheguru (w/vah-hay-gu-ru). Means wonderful teacher. But sikhisms core belief is that no matter what name there is one god. In fact the holy scripture, The Guru Granth Sahib, was compiled by not only the ten gurus but also 36 Muslim and Hindu bhagats (prophets/priests) there are hymns that talk of Allah and vishnu and Ram

I am a Sikh. Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the first guru of ten, had a revelation in 1499 and said "there is no Hindu notMuslim. Only God". The core of our beliefs are: - belief in ONE god, just god. Allah=Christian God=Ram= One God, Vaheguru -honest living -sharing of others -reciting and remembering the name of God -selfless service The Sikh Brotherhood known as the Khalsa was created by Guru Gobind Singh Ji, the tenth and last human guru. He baptized 5 Sikhs who would risk there lives for the guru on Vaisakhi 1699. These 5 are known as the Panj Payareh (5 beloved ones) these five had the 5 khakhars, the 5 articles of faith guruji said every sikh should try to keep and every baptized sikh must have - Kara ~a steel bracelet. It symbolizes the strength of loving God. Also the bracelet in a circle shape presents God's eternal being. Almost all Sikhs wear these on the right hand. It serves as a reminder not to commit wrong deeds. Back in the sikh wars it was used as an wristguard. -Kesh ~Uncut hair. Hair is seen as a gift from God and it is seen as a sin to cut it. Because it is hard to maintain this and it is a million degrees in india Sikhs outside of India cut their hair to stay with the Western lifestyle. This Uncut hair is anywhere on the body including facial hair. Long hair is tied into a topknot and then covered with a bandana called a patka. Older Sikhs after the teenage years wear a turban to cover their head. Women are also permitted to keep facial hair but it is very hard with modern stereotypes and judgement. -Kanga ~a small wooden comb used to rid of the tangles of the hair. It's a sign of cleanliness and order in life. -Kachera ~loose short under garments tied with a fitted string around the waist. It is worn to control sexual desire (kaam) Back in the wars it was used like an under Armour allowing warriors to move quickly with agility -Kirpan ~ A ceremonial dagger. Most controvetsial. Baptized Sikhs wear this to protect others from injustice, it is only used for defensive purposes and is never used for offensive purposes. Very tolerant religion. You should look up all the great stories
