Ever tried to milk an Almond? Small teats.

I have nuts, Greg, could you milk me?

Random plant-based milk, everyone wants it. Random animal-based milk, just disgusting.

Well, isn't that kind of to be expected? On one side you've got soy milk, almond milk, cashew milk, hazelnut milk, coconut milk, hemp milk, and so on. On the other side you've got human milk, whale milk, gorilla milk, buffalo milk, yak, donkey, reindeer, horse, sheep, goat, cow, etc.

Whale milk, so hot right now

No need to pasteurize, the ocean is ice cold!

And only 30% fat

Actually even higher -

http://www.whalefacts.org/whale-milk/

When the female whale lactates the thickness of the whales milk can vary greatly.

In fact a 35% – 50% fat concentration is common among many species of whale as the higher fat percentage allows the whales milk to travel through the water without breaking up.

The same thick milk is often referred to as having a toothpaste like consistency.

Sounds more like whale cheese.

i have never laughed harded at a comment in my life

You think that's milk?

( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

I was wondering why I had to suck so hard to get it.

nothing better than milk you can chew

I... actually really want to try this now...

[–]bros_pm_me_ur_asspix 9ポイント10ポイント  (14子コメント)

uhh i think not, but apparently its a 'thing' but me personally ill stick to my homemade filbert nut milks

Drinking Orca Milk And Other Ways SeaWorld Employees Spend Their Time

“I once had killer whale milk. I’ll starve to death before I have that again. It tastes like fish. It’s got like 15 times more fat than cow milk.”

What's the purpose of drinking nut milks? Don't they typically lack the protein of soy/dairy?

Because they're also good on cereal when you don't want extra calories or are lactose intolerant or just hate the idea of drinking juice from an animal.

Homemade almond milk has almost no sugar, has some fat and tons of calcium.

I suppose, but that's not a very well balanced meal, then. Tons of carbs and only a little fat and a little protein. At least with soy milk, you're getting more balanced nutrients.

At least with soy milk, you're getting more balanced nutrients.

and phytoestrogens

the meal doesn't have to be balanced by itself if you balance it with what you eat for the rest of the day. It's perfect if you need some carbs and a little fat.

well if you have lactose intolerance or a dairy allergy then you are limited on choices. i personally break into hives if i have cow dairy and the taste of goat/sheep/soy milk makes me want to vomit. i like cereal for breakfast, so almond milk it is

[–]bros_pm_me_ur_asspix 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

Me personally I still eat cheese, but milk isn't really satisfying to me. At the end of the day variety is good and I like using the excess nuts

I always get it confused with the toothpaste.

plant-based milk

Juice. It's plant juice. I don't give a shit what the marketing people say.

The marketing peopleTM are so nefarious they've even rewritten our dictionaries!

Well, if a word is around for long enough, it gets it's place in the dictionary. Might as well been invented by marketing people.

Wow, that makes the name 'milkweed' an even bigger coincidence!

Motherfucker I don't give a shit what the dictionary says. The word bae is now officially in the dictionary. Being in the dictionary just means a whole bunch of stupid people started saying it. It doesn't make them right. Milk is milk and juice is juice and this shit ain't milk. Every definition of milk/milking derives from actual milk. You notice they don't include non-white plant liquids in that definition. Why? BECAUSE REAL MILK IS FUCKING WHITE. They only call it milk. That doesn't make it milk. And when you call something one thing when it isn't actually that thing just to make it more appealing and more likely to sell, that's pretty much the definition of marketing.

English experts never got together and decided that this is how English is and forever will be. Words are words because people use them. If you don't want to use a living language go learn Latin.

so if it's a juice and it's white then it's a milk?

Daaaaaammmmmmn he just got REKT!

Plant milks are not juice, and it has nothing to do with marketing. If you look up the definition you'll understand.

It's clearly not milk, either.

Milk, N.

Milk is a white liquid produced by the mammary glands of mammals.

No no no no no no no no NO AND FUCKING NO.

You cannot use the word you are trying to define in the very definition.

"A liquid resembling milk in appearance" is clearly, definitively not milk if you are comparing it to actual milk and calling it milk because it looks like milk. If it were milk, you wouldn't have to use actual milk as the basis for the definition.

Wait, so does that mean that coconut milk is basically cum?

I have an add-on for chrome where i can double click words for definitions, i am admittedly lazy because thanks to it

i am admittedly lazy because thanks to it

And marginally correct!

Huh, so they're right. It's juice and not milk. Thanks for proving yourself wrong.

Semantic change (also semantic shift, semantic progression or semantic drift) is the evolution of word usage — usually to the point that the modern meaning is radically different from the original usage.

So, you first tell us to look up the definition, but when we do, you're all "definitions are meaningless because language evolves"?

Nice.

If you look up the etymology of milk, it's been used for milk-like plant juices since the late 14th century.

It's not that this use in language has just recently evolved, it's merely that words have multiple meanings.

I meant look up the definition of juice. Definitions do change, though, and if everybody called soy milk "soy juice" then the definition of juice would expand to include liquids made with more general methods of preparation.

豆奶 is the chinese word for soy milk. It is literally translated as bean milk. This isn't a conspiracy. You just don't like how words work.

Oh, I see.

Definitions are good if they support your view, but not if they oppose it.

It all makes sense now

My argument is a simple one.

Plant milks are milks and not juices, because they are included in the widely accepted definition of the word "milk." They are a part of this definition due to semantic shift. They are not juice because they do not fit within the widely accepted definition of juice. If, due to semantic shift, both of these definitions changed, then plant milks would be called plant juices. That has not happened.

I never said, nor implied, that definitions were meaningless. I merely cited semantic shift as the reason why the definition of milk has changed.

The word "milk" has been used to describe milk-like plant juices since the early late 14th century. I don't think it's a marketing term.

Ugh, it's marketing from the 14th century. Wake up /u/null_work!

Soy milk, also referred to as soymilk or soya milk, is a plant milk produced by soaking dried soybeans and grinding them in water.

Doesn't sound like juice.

Does... Does that sound like milk to you?

Name a juice that's made by soaking a dry substance in water

Kool-Aid

EDIT: Now you name a milk that is made that way!

I don't recall saying it's a juice.

Does it sound like juice to you?

No. Not exactly. But it sounds 1000 times closer to juice than it does to milk.

...why? It's not the liquid of a fruit or vegetable.

And it's even less like the liquid of an animal, hence, it's 1000 times closer to being juice than milk.

Do you know what "not exactly" and "closer" means?

The modern definition of milk includes plant milks, and the modern definition of juice does not. Do you know what "not exactly" and "closer" mean?

vegetable

In everyday usage, a vegetable is any part of a plant that is consumed by humans as food as part of a savoury course or meal.

It could be the liquid of a veggy, depending on how loose you are with the definition of a veggy.

and in everyday usage, a milk is a white liquid that I put in my cereal.

You're right. It's neither milk nor juice. It's a soy slurry.

MMMMMMMMM DELICIOUS

There's actually something called cashew juice and it's different to cashew milk although I couldn't tell you exactly how. Made from a different part of the plant or something.

[–]Purp 3

It's made from the fruit cashews grow on.

Whereas cashew milk is just like 3 cashews ground up in a liter of water for $8.99.

I drink both. Cow milk in tea and coffee, plant based milk in cereal (almond milk in muesli is amazing). Purely based on the taste.

yeah, I've found a really prefer almond milk in my morning shakes. I get enough protein from the powder and I like the taste better. But cereal is real milk all the way.

Almond/soy/rice milk doesn't trigger my IBS, so after 15 years of avoiding cereals, I can finally enjoy them again. It's not all about the taste!

Ever wonder if you're lactose intolerant?

I'm not. Been through a series of tests (blood, stool, looking for signs of inflammation, parasites, gluten, lactose, glucose, xylose to check my digestive speed, etc) with no abnormal results.

There are so many things that trigger my symptoms, like all dairy products, coconut milk, acidic fruits like apples and mangos (but not oranges!), meat, candy etc. Also stuff like stress, and jogging/running/exercise shortly after eating.

Going in for a colonoscopy next month, at this point I'm just hoping they find something.

I prefer soy in coffee over normal milk

A lot of people choose plant based because they are vegetarian. So they are likely to think that animal-based is disgusting on principle. Also if you haven't had cow's milk in a while it is really gross.

I'm not a vegetarian but I've always thought it was weird that we are the only animal that drinks the milk of another animal. It creeps me out, so I drink the plant milks.

There are many birds and cats in the wild documented as stealing milk directly from the udder of another animal. Some sea birds will even steal seal milk. Matter of opportunity as it's an excellent energy source.

I've also read an interesting theory that the proto European language became dominant and spread due to the adult capacity to digest lactose.

Really? I think goat milk is tasty. I'd try sheep's milk (only had cheese from it), or other milks produced properly

I can't stress this enough: it's not plant milk. It's NUT JUICE!

$10 for a juice?!

whole foods probably

It's Juice Generation. I live right next to one.

This isn't the norm. I get a half-gallon of almond milk for like <$3 at Kroger. :)

And no surprise there is hardly any almonds in it. Like less then 2 oz of almonds in a half gallon. I make it at home, its much better.

What do you do with the almond meal?

It is the norm for these specialized drinks, they are a bit different than your typical cashew/almond/coconut/soy milks at other stores. BluePrint Organic cashew milk is pretty popular at places like Whole Foods. It is between $10 and $15 per 16oz bottle. This was the first product I saw at my town's new Whole Foods. I haven't been back since.

they are a bit different than your typical cashew/almond/coconut/soy milks at other stores.

how

You haven't gone back to a store because of one item? You know not everything at whole foods is overpriced.

Their coffees are a pretty good deal, tofu is cheap, and they have a pretty wide selection. Agreeably some stuff they have is way overpriced, but there's a simple solution to that. Don't buy those items.

[–]Phoque_of_Approval 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

Also, if you buy a case of something they'll give you 10% off. I get my kid's Annie's Mac n Cheese at Whole Foods. Stock up when it's on sale and get 10% off.

It isn't guaranteed whole and safe, rule of thumb is that most things sold at supermarkets are not healthy as farmer market foods.

[–]comingupfor_blair 8ポイント9ポイント  (0子コメント)

I found that to be the most mildly interesting part.

Still pricy but isn't that for the 4 pack of juice below?

What happens if you mix the milks together? 4 layers?

Someone please!

I don't have $20 to waste on that experiment

I do where do I get this shit from.

5 layers, looks like hemp has a 3rd layer at the top.

Id imagine it would be 3 layers....tan white tan.

Depends if the whites are the same/similar enough density /polarity

ITT People who've never heard of plant milk and are strangely defensive about the word 'milk' referring to anything other than dairy milk.

This is a very strange thread. A few people are downvoting everybody who mentions enjoying almond milk or soy milk, and suddenly everybody is a linguistics expert.

[–]Potgut 4

Do plants use their milk to feed and raise their offspring?! Why not just take animal blood, mucus, saliva, semen, or any other mammal fluids and call that 'milk' too?!! While we're at it, we might as well just call the magma/lava spurting out from a volcano 'earth milk' /sarcasm

R/fatlogic has the same argument about salad every few months "this is a salad? No wonder your diet fails" and linking to a snicker salad or jello salad. Um no, eating dessert is not fatlogic. It's just delicious.

[–]Poshul 3

It's not the salad that's mocked, it's people calling the dessert salads healthy.

No one ever calls dessert salads healthy. One post even straight up said "it's not healthy like a green salad" and still got made fun of.

Well if this is milk then cow milk should logically be ground up filtered cow.

Well dairy is the only true "milk".

Mmmm, I want to try that. I use almond milk regularly, but it doesn't have much protein. Where did you find this, OP?

It's a smoothie place called Juice Generation. Taken in NYC but I believe they are national.

Also mildly interesting: almonds are recognize by the shape of the nut & hemp by the shape of the leaves. The almond milk has almond leaves on it but the hemp bottle has seeds (nuts) on it.

Neat!

You know what, I'm looking at it again and I think those are almonds on the almond milk bottle - not leaves.

Whats mildly interesting is that juice costs 9.95. Wtf?

It's Juice Generation. I can tell by the packaging.

It's easier to read the "juice generation" right on the bottle lol

Yea, I just realized that the logo was on the bottle.

Plants ain't even got titties

Well, you aren't wrong.

This is almost... too interesting. I'd have to buy them both.

EDIT: -Then I saw the price tag, I definitely would not be buying them both, fuck this beautiful milk

Wholefoods? I haven't tried Hemp milk but i have tried and prefer coconut milk... any similarities?

not really. Hemp milk is much nuttier and doesn't taste much like milk.

Hemp milk is good for certain things, like making Mac and cheese and in oatmeal.

Even kind of grassy sometimes.

It's Juice Generation

Plants don't have boobs ∴ not milk

You've stumbled into a strange linguistic argument. Plants have no mammary glands, but the simple fact that English usage of milk has been applied to products that look like and are used like dairy milk would be enough to redefine the word.

For comparison, the etymology of meat comes from words used more generally to refer to food or substantial food (going back to german and middle english, i don't know when the divergence happened), which is why mincemeat still exists as a word, usually describing something mostly made of nuts (or nut meat, alternatively). In many ways, you could make the opposite argument of the milk one that you can't assume meat means animal skeletal muscle (and more so offal) and must be applied, at least, to all protein heavy foods, and potentially more.

Moral of the story, if the language is already doing it, don't fight it.

TIL, mincemeat:

A mixture of currants, raisins, sugar, apples, candied citrus peel, spices, and suet, typically baked in a pie

I always thought mincemeat was any hashed meat, like burger meat

I prefer it with nuts, forgot it wasn't traditional necessarily.

What is the command to produce this symbol in my awesome comments?

You're fighting about ~600-650 years of usage. I would just let it go.

[–]time_doesnt_exist 0ポイント1ポイント  (1子コメント)

These have to be two different milks because of density?

They are two different milks. Look at the labels.

10$ for some milk. WTF. what kind of world are we living in.

That is pretty neat'O. Question, what is the hemp milk like?

It's really nice-- I prefer it over almond milk because the taste is more ambiguous. By that I mean almond milk tastes like drinking dissolved almonds. More flavorful than soy, smoother than almond, too. I haven't tried cashew milk because I'm allergic to cashews, but, I think hemp milk is my favorite.

I really like almond mild because it has that distinct almond taste, but I'd still be interested in trying hemp milk. Unfortunately I doubt I'd be able to find it nearby.

I live in Kansas City, Missouri and they sell it the slightly-nicer grocery store. Not chilled and in those paper cartons. It has a high sugar content, though.

They are also two different products. Just look at the labels. They may have some same ingredients, but they have different names and most certainly different amounts of ingredients, leading to different densities in the liquids.

I would expect them to, they are fucking 2 different milk kinds.
