Either you get existential about it or you miss the substance of your argument. If I set a robot on fire would it be distressed? Is an embryo distressed when aborted? It's a mammal and it is a alive. If I measured all the signs that would indicate distress I am sure an embryo displays it while being aborted. So why are we okay with it. Could it be cognitive ability plays a role? Can we apply that same argument to a mouse?

Comparing me to a mouse is irrelevant, I can perceive a reality a mouse cannot. If you want to make moral judgements you should have a basis for them other than "it's cute."

I feel like you're purposely ignoring the point. Both you and a mouse can experience pain. It is pretty much universally agreed that it is better not to experience pain than to experience pain. Killing a mouse in a way that does not cause it pain is more humane because experiencing uncontrollable pain is not pleasant. It doesn't matter if I'm about to die, I'd rather not experience pain, and I'd imagine the mouse probably feels the same way. If you try to argue that than you're just insane.

Comparing any adult animal to a fetus is even more pointless. Yes, the body of a fetus reacts when harmed, but there is no consciousness to be aware of that.

The basis for the moral judgement is pretty simple; don't cause pain if you don't have to. Do you not agree that causing pain, when you don't benefit in any way from it, is wrong?
