From the article,

Sanders is the only presidential candidate to mention Bland on the campaign trail, so far.

I'd like to hear Sanders' (or any dem. candidate) thoughts on Kate Steinle??

Salon is such a joke, the fact that anyone takes it seriously is sad.

Isn't Obama's immigration policy designed to prioritize deporting criminals like the Kate Steinle's murderer? San Francisco circumvented Obama's policy. I don't know why Dem candidates haven't spoken out against the sanctuary city policy in San Fran.

Because they want voters?

Well sure, almost everything the candidates do are aimed towards appealing to voters. I think it's easy enough to see that San Francisco is out of line when they disregard federal immigration policy. I don't think stating that obvious fact would necessarily alienate liberals or even Hispanics. Guys like Francisco Sanchez should be deported, but that exactly what the Obama immigration policy is designed to do.

They can be deported. The local cops however should not be asking anyone about their immigration status

[–]NRA4evahttps://xkcd.com/1332/ 0ポイント1ポイント  (1子コメント)

I agree that local cops shouldn't be going around asking people their immigration status for no reason. But in Sanchez's case, he was a convicted felon who had been deported multiple times. He should have been deported.

The police can't know to deport him since they don't know his citizenship. That's what a sanctuary is

I don't get it. If anyone actually saw the video they'd see that the woman was being extremely belligerent with the officer and refused to comply with his orders. Seriously, the cop exercised respectable restraint by not even tazing her when he would of been well within his rights to do so.

Also, the police weren't even the ones who killed her. She hung herself in her own cell and now people are trying to make this out to be some coverup. The woman was mentally ill and clearly unstable. She killed herself.

Case closed.

"I don't believe they would do such a thing!" Well, not everyone is an open book and will tell someone anything and everything wrong with them.

Just to clarify, let's not pretend the officer wasn't in the wrong here. What he did was blatantly illegal, unless there is some missing context that explains everything. The officer escalated the situation at about the same rate as the woman.

EDIT: Blatantly illegal is too strong of a phrase here, I should have described it more as improper procedure and bordering on some grey areas legally

[–]Secret_PedophileLet's see what Sweden thinks 0ポイント1ポイント  (6子コメント)

No, it wasn't. The woman became extremely belligerent and when he officer asked her to put her cigarette out she refused. He ordered her out of the car and she refused again. Officers are allowed to order people out of their cars.

[–]BoringCode99% Awesome 2ポイント3ポイント  (5子コメント)

"Extremely belligerent" is relative, she responded rudely but accurately. He has no right to ask a citizen sitting in their private vehicle to put out a cigarette. It isn't against the law. Officers can't just give arbitrary orders. They're cops, not dictators. There appears to be no justification for ordering her to exit her vehicle other than to escalate the situation. I will agree that her response was inappropriate, but it really only became extreme after she was arrested. Now perhaps I'm missing some minutia of what powers cops do actually have, so feel free to clarify as necessary.

If I was a cop and a woman was blowing cigarette smoke in my face I'd ask her to put it out too. She can smoke later. And honestly, there's no laws prohibiting police officers from asking people to step out of their vehicle. If you don't want to comply with an officer's orders then you face the consequences.

[–]BoringCode99% Awesome 1ポイント2ポイント  (1子コメント)

Sure, officers can legally require you to exit your vehicle. But unless using the cigarette is perceived as a "threat" the officer cannot legally require you to put it out. They can ask politely of course, but there is no real force of law here.

[–]Secret_PedophileLet's see what Sweden thinks 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

It's called being belligerent. Sure, she has no legal obligation to, but it probably would have made this all to a lot smoother. As you said, he was within his legal authority to ask her to exit the car. She refused so he forced her out. He restrained her but she resisted that as well. All of this could have been avoided had she simply complied with the officer's orders.

A cop can ask you to do anything. There is nothing illegal abut him asking her to put out the cigarette. And a cop can order you to get out of the car for any reason, there is no legal wording needing to justify it.

I guess she may have been high, also she was a cutter, so she had some mental problems, she should have been put on watch for sure. http://www.cnn.com/2015/07/23/us/sandra-bland-arrest-death-main/index.html

Seriously, the cop exercised respectable restraint by not even taking her when he would of been well within his rights to do so.

Wait. When did he exercise respectable restraint?

[–]Secret_PedophileLet's see what Sweden thinks 0ポイント1ポイント  (1子コメント)

By not tasing her. Seriously, cops can tase people for stuff like this.

[–]NRA4evahttps://xkcd.com/1332/ 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

Ahh I didn't realize you meant tasing. I feel like that would have been excessive if he had tased her. His behavior was unacceptable as it is. Slamming her head to the ground? Not exactly exercising restraint.
