Sorry /u/Quouar but I have to ban you now. This violates the moratorium.

You're just jealous that I'm better at being Automod than you.

Aren't moratorium rules lax in these threads?

I'm tired. I'm just so tired.

I had a plan. I was going to load up the car and go west to either Las Vegas or Portland, depending on where I could find a place to live. I was going to do that, find a job there, and get to see a new place. I hadn't told anyone but my husband that this was my plan - I just started doing the research, making phone calls, and doing all the things that needed to be done. I've done all this before (sort of). It's not hard to leave stuff and just go.

I had a job interview with a veterinary practice yesterday. I didn't tell anyone about that either, because the job they were looking for someone for was something that I only applied for as a temporary "I can't find anything" job. I don't have any intention of going into veterinary medicine, but I had the experience they're looking for, so I threw in a resume.

Herein lies the trouble. My mother came home yesterday and asked when I'm moving out, now that my husband has a job. It became clear that she doesn't want me here, that me being here is a major source of stress. I can understand that - I'm an adult, and I haven't lived with my mother since I was 16. But I explained that I'm trying to figure out where we're going and how we're getting there, and the difficulties of finding a place to live when I'm here and the cities I want to go to are over there.

I recognise that it was my ideas that she was calling "irrational" and "stupid," and they absolutely are, but it's the sort of thing that feels like an insult against myself. She said it would be better for me to stay here, and that it would be idiotic for me to turn down the vet job if I'm offered it. She's right, of course. It's better to take the job I know I have (assuming I get it) than keep going and end up in the same place I'm in now.

But fuck me, I can't stand being around her or my stepfather. I hate how every conversation feels like an intervention. I hate how I'm judged. And I hate that the plans I have for how to get out are judged as irrational, and me in turn. Because I am, and they are, but irrationality is better than being stuck here with her.

I'm so tired.

Being close to wanting to kill yourself and finding yourself frozen with total inactivity sucks.

That's all I have to say.

I've been there, med's really really helped.

I played with the subreddit/user simulator bot on Monday. The resulting Markov chain comment said something about Peruvians advocating for me to commit suicide or die violently.

What a rude bot.

We're late on this. Somebody better refill AutoMod's coffee reservoir.

I'm sort of tempted to report your for breaking the moratorium, but I think most of us can agree that it was a pretty bad idea to vote for you in the first place.

[–]Quouarthe Weather History Slayer[S] 2

On the other hand, I knew as soon as I stuck it on there that it was going to happen. It's just too good a joke to pass up.

I did an intense leg workout at the gym on Tuesday and paid for it Wednesday. I barely slept last night and my legs are still crippled. I need to drag myself to the gym soon. Someone send help.

[–]KaliYugazTenno Heika Banzai 1

If it's that bad then rest for a little while longer. Your body needs to get used to lifting heavy.

If it's still sore after a day or so, then go work out anyways, it should be fine.

I can't skip two days in a row. I'm just going to walk it off, literally. And maybe have the trainer help me stretch my legs out and work out all that lactic acid. I tried stretching and walking yesterday, but I seem to have only made it worse.

[–]KaliYugazTenno Heika Banzai 1

It's not lactic acid that causes the soreness, it's microtears in the muscle. As the tears are repaired, the fibers get stronger, which is the biological basis of strength training.

You can't walk it off, though massaging and hot water does help. Eating a lot of good, protein rich food also helps with, and really is necessary for, the healing process.

Damn my high school understanding of biology. I thought it was just acid buildup.

Maybe I'll just do arm and chest stuff today.

[–]KaliYugazTenno Heika Banzai 1

What's your workout program? Which exercises do you do on each day? On what timescale do you increase the weight? How many reps and sets?

I just go to the gym and do what the trainer tells me to do (with some arguing and negotiation). It varies from day to day, but I always start out with some cardio and then move on to working out arms or chest or back or legs or core.

[–]KaliYugazTenno Heika Banzai 0

What does he tell you to do?

Do you use the bar (instead of the machines, which suck) and do squats, bench, and deadlifts as your main exercises? Because that's a basic necessity for all weight training.

Yeah, lactic acid is metabolized really quickly. The burn you feel during high intensity work, and immediately after, is lactic acid buildup. Delayed onset muscle soreness is caused by (good) damage to muscles, and with proper progression will help you grow stronger.

Low intensity active rest is your friend. Don't stress damaged muscles too much, but a light run or row will help increase blood flow, remove wastes, and bring in nutrients to help your muscles heal. Stay hydrated. If the extreme soreness continues, or your pee turns brown, consider going to a doctor.

[–]KaliYugazTenno Heika Banzai 1

Also, /u/Mictlantecuhtli, it's important to remember if the soreness and pain started about a day after the workout or started as a sharp jolt immediately during the workout. If its the latter, then you should see a doctor. If it's the former, then that's just how the muscle gets stronger, so you're fine.

Good point! Rhabdo is rare, but I'm always so cautious with my friends. Don't want anyone to get hurt! :)

The soreness definitely started yesterday, the day after the workout.

I'll probably do some rowing for sure.

So I found and read Isabella Bird's travel diary in Meiji Japan yesterday. What strikes me is that the basic Western obsessions and stereotypes about Japan and East Asia have barely changed at all after 140 years. There's stuff in there about the weirdness and "immorality" of their pop culture (the theater then, anime now) passages about her fawning over an Asian kid prodigy, a lengthy discourse about the "homogeneity of the Japanese", the usual misconceptions about Buddhism, admiration of the efficiency of their trains, condescension at their "Engrish" (as we would call it today, Bird just complained that she couldn't understand anything) and so on. It's actually kind of entertaining to recognize all the usual modern tropes in their 19th century form.

misconceptions about Buddhism

What were they?

[–]KaliYugazTenno Heika Banzai 0

That there's a "pure philosophical" Buddhism that was "corrupted" over time, and Jodo-shinsu is literally Buddhist Christianity.

Some version of that type certainly existed(that played a large part in the rationale for the French and the British to understand Pali), but I'm pretty sure that the old one didn't involve things like denying reincarnation?

I was just reading up on the JSDF, and was struck by a thought. The German Bundeswehr made use of a large amount of results-may-vary denazified Wehrmacht personnel, especially in it's leadership. Did the JDSF do the same? What were their thoughts on working with the Americans, and their doctrines? Does anyone know?

[–]hussard_de_la_mort"sandwich in my right, .45 in my other hand" 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

Based on some extremely cursory googling, the JSDF's predecessor was issued Garands in 1950.

For those of you who keep up with the Hip Hop world this week has been filled with lots of drama. Meek Mill accused Drake of using a ghostwriter, Ghostface Killah called out Action Bronson on youtube, and Nicki Minaj is in a tiff with Taylor Swift. And all I can think about is how ashamed my high school self would be of me for keeping up with celebrity gossip.

Makes me glad most of the music I listen to is full of people too old to be bothered with social media.

Um, I follow this sub and quite like its content. I like having accurate knowledge of the past because I don't want to be the unwitting pawn advancing someone else's agenda.

That being said, I think I have some bad history of my own that I would like to correct. So are there any American Civil War historians who would like to chat? Specifically ones who know about Sherman and Reconstruction.
