That was an impressive catch with great reflexes for an older woman.

That was an impressive catch for any age

It really was! It also made me think: That is a really fast projectile... What happens when it hits someone who fails to catch it?

They die instantly, usually. A foul ball has an 82% chance of killing someone it hits. Baseball is an incredibly dangerous sport to watch from the stands.

Her phone is gonna blow up right now.

How fucking weird is that? This really is the future.

No kidding. Say that to someone in the 1970's and they'd think a terrorist got a hold of their landline phone.

Speaking of, Munich is a pretty cool movie.

Some old lady catches a baseball. Her phone blows up. 2 years later, we see it on reddit, and start talking about it, and soon two total strangers are talking about an underrated Spielberg film that managed to give a balanced view on the Israel/Palestine conflict, despite the fact that it was made by the lizard people.

This needs to be higher, that gif didn't even do this catch justice. That ball was flying.

I love how the announcer catches himself at the end

"I'm guessing that's not the first...time she's caught a baseball before"

No one is impressed with the work the cameraman is doing?

He's the real mvp

Baseball and golf cameramen must have bionic eyes. Watching the Open this last week, there was no ball contrast with the sky. White ball on white clouds. How do they do it?

That guy knows exactly what he's talking about. Helped me understand the concept easily.

Hey this was a good informative post. Thanks. I had no idea about that. Photography is really cool. I know nothing about it but that guy was really nice to listen to.

Thanks Freddy! Good to see he's found work after his rib joint closed down

Live TV director/camera operator here. Most of it isn't fancy technology. The operators are just really good at tracking the ball. They do it for their livelihood, and the more you do something the better you get at it. Of course, however, there are things that can help. A good camera head, pedestal, viewfinder that's not reflecting the Sun, maybe some zebra stripes (but that's really not going to help significantly), Peaking (which highlights the edges of objects in the viewfinder), and small adjustments to brightness/contrast in the viewfinder.

As a former baseball cameraman, I appreciate your recognition.

We need an ama, Mr. Cameraman

No kidding. I bet he checked out all kinds of hot chicks in the stands

Minor league teams in college towns are the best.

Let's be honest, we no longer need an AMA, thanks for your time.

I came to the comments to make sure someone felt the same as me.

Actually I thought it was cool that she seemed to start smiling when it happened, she got what was happening.

I like to think that while her body is a cage, she is living a full and great life underneath.

Seeing her smile made me smile :)

My sister is mentally handicapped. Most don't experience life in the same way as we do, if they did they'd be fucking depressed, in my sister's case it's that she knows she's disabled but she doesn't fully understand what impact it has on her life, in her mind everything is dandy, good. But this girl sure as fuck knows what's going on and her enjoyment that it happened is definitely genuine.

I think it's likely that the woman who caught it is her mom by the way. When your child is mentally disabled you will for the rest of your life live like you have a 10 year old to take care of.

I to think that was her daughter. And godammit she needed to catch one of those balls. Probably a small life long goal she just achieved. And it was a damn good catch too!

My brother is mentally handicapped. He got really "lucky" and can hold a job at goodwill, but will live with my mother then me when she dies.

[–]mankind_is_beautiful 12ポイント13ポイント  (2子コメント)

My sister isn't too bad, you can have a conversation with her on about a 6 year old's level, and she's assigned 'jobs', but they're more something to keep her and people like her busy. Stuff like filling up the feeders at the petting zoo. It's good though, it makes her really happy, she loves those little pot belly pigs. Her coming back home covered in animal shit and her not giving a fuck about it is something we have to deal with though, but it's worth it.

I've always wondered what it's like to be in the shoes of a sibling caretaker. This is really interesting to me. Any documentaries you reccomend?

[–]mankind_is_beautiful [スコア非表示]  (0子コメント)

I wish I did but no, sorry. I don't think I've ever seen one that had any relevance to it. If you can think of questions I'm willing to answer them as best I can. Suffice it to say though, that as a sibling you know all the limitations and you always realize that if the disabled person lives long enough, which is always the question, you're eventually going to have to take over the role of your parents. But I have another sister who is healthy, so I'm not sure yet how all of that is going to work out. She will live with either of us or split time between us, that's something my other sister and I will discuss when the time comes. For now we're too young to really think about that. Well I say too young, we're both in late twenties, but you know what I mean, it's too early, both of our parents are still alive and we take a part in caring for her as it is already.

But I won't lie to you, thinking of how she might live to 80 years old is scary. I mean I love her, but the idea of having to take care of what is essentially an adult child who wears diapers for the rest of my life is scary. Maybe that's selfish, and I don't want her to die obviously, but it's not something that any person would be happy about I don't think. Which is why I believe if you find out during pregnancy that your child will be disabled to a point where it can't take care of itself, it's better to abort it. You may be strong enough to decide that you want to take care of it for the rest of your life, but you need to understand that you're making that decision for the entirety of your family.

Mad respect for you and your family.

Thank you for describing it this way. I get very upset when I see people with disabilities. My heart breaks for them and I wonder if they're suffering or sad.

What you wrote helps. Thank you.

For this reason i'm really scared of having children.

Children are very scary... yes.

Imagine having a perfectly capable child, who has a good home and is given every opportunity but fails constantly to achieve even the minimum amount of success needed to be a functioning member of society completely from lack of any fucks being given

... That my friend, is really fucking depressing....

[–]mankind_is_beautiful 1ポイント2ポイント  (0子コメント)

The odds are small but significant. My sister was healthy until she was 5, or 6 I don't remember. Something in her brain went wrong and the docs still don't really know what. These days though you can find out pretty early if your baby will be healthy, so that's good. I'm for aborting unhealty babies because I know what it means to raise an unhealthy one. But, don't live your life scared of what might be, live your life hopeful of what might be.

Probably not her mum as there were a few handicapped in that area, maybe a carer. Either way it was a fucking good catch and she probably gave it to one of the group.

I'm a terrible person for imagining it.

I felt like a good person when I read this, because I didn't even notice and was focused on the badass catch by that lady. I then felt much worse about the whole thing when I had to go back and look a second time.

this is the one that the first time I saw it posted a while back, someone made the comment about how the longer you stare at it the funnier it gets, and that still holds true for me. I can't stop laughing every time I go back to it.

I like how the severity of the facial expressions lessens exponentially away from the impact zone. I wonder if it's an inverse square relationship.

For the "can't unsee" file: The lighting on the chair in front of the unlucky girl, plus the nearby girls' choice of pants, makes this look like she picked a terrible time/place to rub one out.

The difference in reaction is also priceless with the guy in the row behind her doing everything he can to try and avoid the ball coming at him.

Right before he was turned to stone

Who's the woman doing gang signs?

She's mentally handicapped you retard

It's very possible for her to have a physical and not mental disability, such as Cerebral Palsy.

I dont think so. I think she's with the disabled guys, but as a carer.

She's obviously a Crip.

Edit: Because she is wearing blue, people!

Little does she know by catching that ball she is now in the starting lineup for the NY Mets, tough break.

On a related note, I was at a futures league game last week and a foul ball came screaming at me just to the side of home plate behind a protective net and I screamed like a little bitch.

I was there and sat on the other side of the stadium and could see her jumping up and down.

I love everything about this. The reaction. The love shown by the disabled/handicapped. Great moment, man!

I loved it and then of course freaked myself out picturing what would have happened to any of the handicapped people if that rocketing ball had been a few feet to the right. Jesus, I want to cry and puke at the same time.

I'd be that happy too if I caught a ball where she was sitting. In that area you rarely see any foul balls there to use your glove.

I can get down with that.
