Opinion of Co-ed Fraternity (self.Frat)

Ok, so we have been a fraternity (local,and males only) since 1965 and decided to become a Co-ed Fraternity in 1992. I was wondering what other Fratstars opinions are of Co-ed Fraternities. We still abide by the usual customs but just accept women. I view this as a benefit because it is no longer a brotherhood and instead a family. Do national fraternities view groups like us negatively?

That just makes my head hurt thinking about the implications…if women are allowed to pledge with men, and a pledge fucks his pledge “sister” isn’t that fraternal incest? If said pledges have a kid from said fucking, is that kid a guaranteed legacy? This is one hell of a snowball…

I'm going to sound like an ass but here we go...

Every fraternity around here thinks a "co-ed fraternity" is bullshit and quite honestly laughable. I just fail to see how that is enjoyable. The entire point of a fraternity is brotherhood and fucking around with a bunch of retards for your college years and enjoying the connections and all for the rest of your life. The sororities take care of the girls for you and you deal with them when you please. If I had to deal with girls showing up to the house 24/7 as actual actives in my fraternity I'd explode.

A fraternity with women? Fuck that.

TL;DR: No, they're not taken seriously by national fraternities.

The women are held to the same status as men. they join to have the brother aspect of a family. They are held to the same standards of pledging and conduct. That being said, you don't sound like an ass. I did in fact ask. Also, you don't know our local fraternity's history and that is ok. I respect your opinion as much as my own. Thanks for your honest opinion.

It's just that, to me, men and women are so different. To put them together in a completely platonic relationship with college men doesn't work. That sounds like a club and basically Friendzone Headquarters. I just don't get the attraction.

All of my closest girl friends are in sororities. In no way, shape, or form do I ever want them in the same fraternity as me. It's a bond that men share that I do not believe women can value and participate in. Once you throw women in the mix it strips it to a club-like organization with Greek letters.

The way you keep referring to it as a "family" is kind of creeping me out. I can't put it into words, but it's making me cringe.

When I was an undergrad over a decade ago there was a co-ed fraternity at my university. It was anything but 'Friendzone Headquarters'. There may have been more sexual debauchery in that house than all of the other houses combined. I don't know too many specifics, but they also had one of the most gruesome pledging processes I had heard about (and at times saw). I guess that is one of the advantages of not being affiliated with an IFC.

With that said, no one took them seriously and I don't know any National Organizations who give co-ed fraternities a second thought.

I'm in a co-ed fraternity and I can personally attest that we have more sexual debauchery under our roof than any other frat I have seen. We love our incest.

I have been aware of local fraternities who went co-ed and then vanished from the face of the earth shortly there after. Yours has been co-ed since 1992? While I am not in favor of and do not support co-ed fraternities, you've got to be doing something right. You are in a local on your campus, it doesn't really matter what other people think.

It doesn't sound like a real fraternity. It sounds like cherry-picking the recognizable parts of fraternities and trying to pin them on a club and telling us it's a fraternity. I don't see how anything brotherhood-like can be achieved with it. For example, say male A from your fraternity shows his aquarium to a female co-ed that male B from your fraternity has had a thing with for a while. B gets mad at A, and now there is a situation in the fraternity. It would seem weird to have female members of your fraternity involved in the matter, and that kind of defeats the purpose of the brotherhood attitude of going through shit together. So I mean, if you are into this kind of stuff, power to you, but I don't see it being worthy of the brand "fraternity".

It's a damn shame that your members made that decision in 1992.

I suspect that the entire sense of community in the chapter has fundamentally been altered.

not a fraternity. it's a club that puts greek letters on themselves. i couldn't fathom pledging with girls, i don't even think it would be possible.

Yeah I'm not trying to be a dick but co ed fraternities are just clubs. In no way can I see the appeal of having girls in the same organization as me. Plus, if one of my "sisters" and I both wanna bang, we're gonna bang. Some arbitrary rule isn't gonna change that

Honestly If you never actually been around or been a part of a co-ed frat you seriously need to STFU. It's honestly the best choice I have ever made so IDK about all these other co-ed fraternities and how they do it, but we, ALPHA PSI LAMBDA are the largest Co-ed multicultural Fraternity in the Nation and has been going strong since 1985. We have chapters from FL, IL, TX, OH, KY, and many more and it is awesome how close we all are. We are also officially a social greek fraternity as part of the MGC council not some bullshit community service club with letters on them. I have personally rushed and have friends in fraternities in the IFC, and I could honestly say that I am 100% glad I didn't join that shit. Some of your fraternities aren't close at all, its just a giant sausage fest of clicks within fraternities, yea you have brotherhood with like only a handful of members, you guys sometimes don't even know who is in your own "brotherhood" on campus.

Yea the whole thing about "oh what if brother A and brother B likes sister C etc.." STFU, You frat guys act like you don't sometimes like the same girl and get into altercations, I seen that plenty of times before. Also guys that think we don't have brotherhood, thats when you're totally wrong, you guys act like we could never have our own brotherhood and sisterhood days/time. I have seen IFC fraternities multiple times treat their "brothers" like complete strangers just because their alumni, members from other chapters, or simply not close. And the sororities? Dont even get me started, SOME of you girls have clicks in your sororities and talk mad shit about your own sisters. With familia, we never see that because were always there for each other.

Some of you people need to stop living inside your little bubble of yours. We have chapters with houses and some without just like you guys, and we have been told that we throw some intense ass parties where its like a giant dance club. We are just like you guys, if not even better and closer with one another because we honestly treat each other like family.

My (female) cousin just joined a coed fraternity, and she thinks of herself as a brother, and a legitimate part of greek life, which makes me sick. Her pledge process sounded lame (something to do with interviews and math problems), and she doesn't even have a house. She likes the fact that she is part of a "brotherhood" and doesn't have to worry about hooking up with those "brothers", so in other words she likes the comfort of having a permanent friend zone. Honestly the whole thing sounds like a joke, and it makes fraternities seem like a joke. Co-Ed Fraternities should not be taken seriously, and if you are in one that has incest you should take a good long look at yourself in the mirror, cause it's fucking disgusting if you think of them as "family" or as a "brother" but would fuck them anyway.
