Just some quick calculations...

Length of (assuming) Olympic lap pool: 50 meters or 160 feet.

Average weight of a Japanese male: 67.6kg or 149lbs.

Average height of a Japanese male: 171.4cm or 5ft 7in.

Considering number of divers it would take to stretch the length of the pool, which is 28... the bottom diver would have to support a total of 4,172lbs or 1896kgs.

Also... the top diver would be hitting the water at a speed of approximately 91mph (if I've done my math correctly, probably not...).

So.... he dead.

Not at all... that would actually cause the entirety of the formation to "slide back" away from the end of the pool. Most likely scenario, the diver would push (with superhuman strength, of course) up onto his toes, like a calf-raise, as they were tipping over, as the bottom 8-10 divers actually would had no impact on which way the tower was falling. It'd be the middle/top divers who would have the greatest impact on the trajectory of the fall.

Also, I'd like to mention that the force alone on this gentlemans legs would be enough to crush a soda can...

But seriously, the forces that would be applied in several different aspects of this video, would be catastrophic on the human body...

Your calculation doesn't take into account the people below the top person. Looking at the gif, it looks like the divers stay in an almost-straight line all the way to the bottom, likely exerting a force to do so.

Approximating the chain of divers as a rod, I got ~86mph:

2/2 = mgh

(1/3)mr2ω2/2 = mg(h/2)

r2ω2 = 3gh

v2 = 3gh, v= ~38.34m/s ~86 mph

The center of mass is halfway up, so we have mgh/2 as the total change in energy, and the moment of intertia is m*h^2/3. The final energy is I*w^2/2, where I is the moment of interia and w is the angular velocity, so

I*w^2/2 = m*g*h/2

m*h^2*w^2/3 = m*g*h

w = sqrt(3g/h)

w ~ 0.77 radians/second

The velocity at the tip is h*w, or 38.5 m/s, not taking into account air resistance.

The acceleration is not constant, it is the vertical component of the angle at each point on the circle. (When the angle is 45 degrees, the acceleration is half of gravity, for example.) Also, there is wind resistance.

Gravity, regardless of angle, is a conservative force. Therefore his original calculation is correct. Breaking the acceleration into components on the circle can ultimately be described by the conservation of gravitational potential energy to kinetic energy. Breaking the components up is just more work for something that can be described in two formulas.

No way these people would remain stacked (even if they were capable of handling the 4000+ pounds and keeping balance). Either they would lose their grips on the person above them or their legs/arms would be snapped off. This is due to the toppling tower problem. The moment required to accelerate the top of the tower exceeds the strength of the tower's bending strength.

  1. No one can hold the amount of people as shown in the gif without collapsing, a few maybe, but not 20 or so.
