Nicki Minaj Rants About Her VMA Noms, Pisses Off Taylor Swift

Nicki Minaj Rants About Her VMA Noms, Pisses Off Taylor Swift
You might think that Nicki Minaj would be satisfied with and excited about the two MTV Video Music Awards nominations she received for her song “Anaconda” Tuesday: One for Best Female Video, and the other, Best Hip Hop Video. But you’d be mistaken.
The rapper took to Twitter the same afternoon to voice her frustration over not being nominated in two other categories that she felt the raunchy video also deserved, for Best Choreography and Video of the Year.
To add insult to injury (in her eyes, anyway), the video for Minaj’s song with Beyonce, “Feeling Myself,” received no nominations.
“Thank you for my nominations,” Minaj tweeted at MTV. “Did FeelingMyself miss the deadline or…?”
Things escalated when she spoke of the cultural impact “Anaconda” had, and insinuated that, were she a different “kind” of artist, her work would have received more praise. Eek.
If I was a different “kind” of artist, Anaconda would be nominated for best choreo and vid of the year as well.

Ellen did her own anaconda video and did the #choreo lol. Remember her doing that kick . Even mtv did a post on the choreo @MTV remember?

U couldn’t go on social media w/o seeing ppl doing the cover art, choreo, outfits for Halloween…an impact like that & no VOTY nomination?

It didn’t end there. Minaj then referenced “’other’ girls” who, like Minaj, had broken records with their videos, which “celebrate women with very slim bodies,” and wound up getting nominated:
If your video celebrates women with very slim bodies, you will be nominated for vid of the year

She explained that her main motivation for the rant was race-related.
I’m not always confident. Just tired. Black women influence pop culture so much but are rarely rewarded for it. https://t.co/2xOvJzBXJX

But the Internet saw those particular tweets as a jab against Taylor Swift — and, unsurprisingly so, considering the fact that she, aside from Minaj’s gal pal Bey, is the only other female artist nominated for Video of the Year. (Plus, it’s hard to deny that the vast majority of the women in her vid for “Bad Blood” err on the thin side.)
And evidently, Swift did too. Not typically one to engage in public arguments with fellow celebs, the typically sweet pop star — who’s famously had her own embattled history with the VMAs — logged online and fired back at Minaj with a particularly empowered feminist message.
@NICKIMINAJ I’ve done nothing but love & support you. It’s unlike you to pit women against each other. Maybe one of the men took your slot..
— Taylor Swift (@taylorswift13) July 21, 2015
To which Minaj was all, Say WHA?, as well as pushing Swift to lend her voice to Minaj’s plight.
Huh? U must not be reading my tweets. Didn’t say a word about u. I love u just as much. But u should speak on this. @taylorswift13

Which, I don’t know… I’m not totally buying that she wasn’t referencing Swift. But whatever, maybe she just realized that starting beef with the often-rabid Swifty minions wasn’t worth the hassle and death threats.
Either way, Swift seemed to accept Minaj’s explanation, and, in true Tay-Tay form, publicly invited her to join her ever-burgeoning #girlsquad.
@NICKIMINAJ If I win, please come up with me!! You’re invited to any stage I’m ever on.

So, #CrisisAverted? It’s still pretty unclear. After criticizing “white media” for apparently pitting her and Swift against one another, Minaj went on to retweet several rather feisty comment directed at Swift from some of the rapper’s fans.
.@taylorswift13 stop using “support all girls” as an excuse to not be critical of racist media that benefits and glorifies you

nicki was making valid points about the history of racism in the music industry, taylor should be standing by her not making it about her

Believe it or not, there are some things that are so much BIGGER than you, @taylorswift13. You owe @NickiMinaj an apology.

I'm baffled as to WHY @taylorswift13 felt the need to come at @NickiMinaj for speaking on behalf of unsung black female entertainers..
— Elgin Charles (@ElginCharles) July 21, 2015
Oh man. Could this heated public convo end up resulting in “Bad Blood Pt. 2,” or will Minaj accept Swift’s onstage peace offering? We’ll just have to wait and see when the VMAs air August 30th.
