I bought humane traps once because my daughter made me. So in wanders an entire fucking family of mice, mom, dad, babies... all stuck in there. So now i have this trap and what the fuck do you do with it? Let them go a a few houses down so they come right back? No I ended up just throwing them in a bucket of water cause I couldn't figure out what to do with them.

TLTR; just kill them.

Varmints gonna varmint. Spread disease, procreate, spread disease, procreate. Might as well. I would have put regular traps in the humane ones.

I usually drive all of 5 minutes away from my house and let them go in some field somewhere away from houses.

You can release them further away instead of killing them. If you're going to kill them, at least do it humanely.

They come back.

What is a humane way to kill something? Buy them a drink first?

Quickly, and without pain or distress.

First question is why? What difference does it make?

Second question, is there a way to die that isn't stressful? Maybe while getting a blow job or something but outside of that dieing pretty much sucks.

Third, how on earth can I gauge what would stress out a mouse? Is poison or a trap that snaps it's neck better or worse? How should I know that?

Is it the physical pain you are concerned with or the psychological? If psychological how do we know a mouse is self aware enough to have psychological torment or even understand pain the way a human does?

Now see how existential we have gotten over a fucking mouse, our time is better spent finding a cure to cancer and just killing the little fuckers.

FINE, /u/penlies, JUST FUCKING STOMP THEM WITH YOUR LOAFERS.

First question is why? What difference does it make?

Would you rather be tourtured to death or die peacefully in your sleep? That's the difference.

Second question, is there a way to die that isn't stressful?

See option 2 above.

Third, how on earth can I gauge what would stress out a mouse?

Mice are mammals. It's a pretty safe assumption that mice will find certain situations stressful, as we would. Being set on fire, for example, would cause a mouse distress.

Is it the physical pain you are concerned with or the psychological?

Physical pain, of course.

Now see how existential we have gotten over a fucking mouse

You, got existential. Ain't no we about it.

OK, the two methods of culling vermin (poison vs trap):

Warfarin thins the blood. It's great for preventing stroke. And usually it wouldn't kill, except that rats and mice are constantly squeezing through tiny gaps, causing microscopic ruptures in the capillaries. Ordinarily not a problem, but if your blood doesn't clot it causes massive haemorrhage (sp?). Bleeding to death is actually a minimum stress way to die.

Neck snap (cervical dislocation) is a recognised humane method of killing in most of the world. Aside from a lot of reflex convulsing, twitching and so on death is very rapid indeed. Usually it's done in combination with concussion or stunning so that the mouse or rat is unconscious (to minimise stress, of course). Without the stunning there is a few seconds of pain, terror and distress.

On balance, warfarin poisoning is probably less stressful and more humane, essentially the animal will go into shock, then fall asleep, then die.

If I told you that you could choose between dying immediately this moment without realizing it or having someone kidnap you and force you to drown, what would you choose?

I would choose to not be a mouse.

I hope you drown some day. Cause one day you will die, and what difference does it make how you die. But hey, I hope you get a blowjob from Pamela Anderson just before you drown so it'll be less stressful.

Damn dude, all this hate over mice.

What is a humane way to kill something?

Fast and painless instead of with minutes of panic and pain.

Oh so like a fucking mouse trap that snaps it's neck?! So maybe they should label THOSE humane instead of the ones that trap it thereby educing panic?

That's not humane enough, you need to set the mouse family up with steady source of income and make sure the job comes with full benefits and a 401k. Make sure the rat hole is in a good school district and the crime is low on that end of town. Then maybe take them to Ikea so they can own full sets of furniture. How do you expect them to live without the babies having bunk beds that can't double as an office area. YOU MONSTER!

Fuck that, they eat shit and piss everywhere and I'm suppose to walk my happy ass a half mile away just so more can do the same thing. These people would probably cry over dead mosquitoes. Snap the neck and end their shit, their last thought will be "oh food" SNAP! If I was eat shitting and pissing in someone else's house I'd be okay with that conclusion. "Aw man large pizza with extra cheese and pepperoni" SNAP!

Its your house handle them how you want.

If most people would use "humane" traps only to kill the animals slower than via neck snap, then yes. But normal people buy humane traps to not kill the mouse instead of killing it slower. A lot of people also forget about the trap and the animals die even more painfully, but that's another topic.

I've pretty much always had the same opinion as you, but nobody likes to hear it.

Well to everyone else's credit, I'm a dick about it.

I would rather get trapped somewhere with a bit of panic and be released in a field than get my neck snapped...

Pest and disease control inherently doesn't factor in whether the creature wants to live or not.

[–]done_holding_back 1ポイント2ポイント  (1子コメント)

They're labeled humane on the assumption that you aren't going to use their captivity to be inhumane. If you're throwing them into a bucket of water, then yes, snapping their neck is more humane. The product is only as inhumane as you make it.

Is this not all common sense?

So removing them from the only home they have ever known, throwing them into the wild away from shelter and food allowing them to be hunted and then eaten alive by birds and cats is more humane than my quick bucket?

Or even better, abandon existential concerns for mice entirely. Just kill the stupid little fuckers any way that's convenient.

They don't come back if you take them far enough away.

Then those guys bring them back when they catch them?

[–]T-Luv 1

Just get a few snakes and put them in the bucket with the mice. Snakes eat the mice, problem solved, no more mice.

It might not be safe for the snake.

Then find an ingenious snake trap...

Perhaps a bucket of some sort...

No all the other animal lovers in this thread would think it's unacceptable to kill them that way. If they see the snake, or if the snake bites them it might cause them distress. Too inhumane boycott snakes.

We moved into a new house and caught 3 the first day. Took them away from the cats (unharmed) and relocated them to a churchyard about 4 miles away.

I'm sure something ate them soon after.

I owned rats. Best way to put them down is to put them in bin with a smaller bin of dry ice with some water in it. Wait for the gas to build up and drop them in. Painless, least stressfull way to go. I miss my pet rat, dude was chill. For those wondering why I put him down, because he was riddled with cancer and was suffering.

Get a cat. It's the circle of life, and even if the cat is (like mine) generally too slow and doesn't kill them when it catches them, they decide it's easier to hit up other houses.

I'm sure with your fully sized human brain you might've had the idea of releasing them further away than a few houses down. You killed them because you couldn't be bothered to be humane.
