Lame. Tried bitcoin yet? It works anywhere. You can either tip him in the comments, or withdraw to the bitcoin address he listed above.

I'm a bot, bleep, bloop. Someone has linked to this thread from another place on reddit:

I just haven't gotten around to setting it up.

Thanks for the tip; might be the impetus I needed.

If you want to use Bitcoin, use Bitcoin the open source project not ChangeTip the data mining corporation.

Don't set up a ChangeTip account before reading up on the privacy and data mining concerns.

Too late, the best time to get in on a ponzi scheme like bitcoin is before it starts to take off. You're late to the party, it's already been pumped and dumped by people like BashCo.

By the way, /u/BashCo is a Changetip employee and he's just pushing his companies products on you while neglecting to put out a disclaimer. All of the sock puppet account Changetip used were banned so he's now got a boots on ground approach and is personally begging people to join Changetip.

I only "sort of" know how bitcoin works. I don't use it as an investment vehicle. I only use it because a few services that I use (usenet related) only accept that. And, PayPal and other things always have problems on millionairemakers.

Is there any reason I should be avoiding Bitcoin and or Changetip?

Regarding ChangeTip, ask yourself how does the company make money? Supposedly it's by charging a 1% withdrawal fee but can this be enough until they see large-scale adoption? The company currently floats on VC funding but when it goes under they'll have to sell your data.

A Cornell professor put it more eloquently: http://hackingdistributed.com/2014/12/17/changetip-must-die/

Fair enough. It was an interesting read. I feel somewhat safe, though. I buy the coin through somewhere else and then send it to Changetip. Reddit is my only linked account with Changetip.

I read their privacy policy. I'm assuming the author of that article thinks they are going to eventually sell the company and the user data along with it? Seems plausible.

Other than that they say they aren't going to sell user data.

I looked at changetip and it will cost me more than $2 to send $1. That would be silly.

[–]BashCo 0ポイント1ポイント  (4子コメント)

That's some fuzzy math. How do you figure?

[–]ThePrevailer 3ポイント4ポイント  (3子コメント)

I logged in at changetip.com clicked add money and tried to add $1 before I saw this:

There's $1.05 in bank fees to add $1.

[–]BashCo 0ポイント1ポイント  (2子コメント)

Ah, you're referring to a bank transfer fee to exchange USD to BTC. This is typical for any currency exchange, and contrary to popular belief, credit card purchases aren't free. People who have already procured bitcoins generally don't buy $1 at a time. They buy more than they need and then replenish when necessary. Once you're past the bank hurdle, it's typically a lot more seamless with much lower fees. For example, depositing bitcoin costs about 2 or 3 cents to support the network.

changetip is a joke and for the most part so is bit-Coin. steer clear unless you want to get scammed and have your real identity appropriated by changetips

[–]sciencehatesyou 1ポイント2ポイント  (0子コメント)

That's a lot of words, but you didn't say "I apologize for deriding your comment with the phrase 'fuzzy math.'"

You also didn't say "I work for ChangeTip and I get paid to push it on people on forums like this one."

And you neglected to mention "I am a moderator of Bitcoin, even though I have a clear conflict of interest."

If you buy directly from circle.com it's less than a penny fee.

coinbase.com is low fees too but they make you pay the $0.15 bank fee, so only makes sense if you buy more than $1

Hey /u/BashCo you seem like you know your way way around bitcoin. Can you explain to me how OP will get the money if you tip through comments. Does he have to accept or follow some link. If someone sees your tip before OP does that mean someone else can take the tip? I really want to set up a bitcoin account but I'm kinda weary on it. I live in Canada so I know Google wallet doesn't work here.

[–]skiippy 9ポイント10ポイント  (0子コメント)

best way to find out :) $2 /u/changetip

only you will be able to collect that tip, the changetip bot should message you with instructions on signing up, and it'll link your reddit account so it knows you're allowed to collect that tip

you can move that bitcoin wherever you like to play with after that

[–]BashCo 5ポイント6ポイント  (0子コメント)

OP created a changetip account ahead of time by linking it to his reddit account via OAuth. At that point, anyone else who's linked and has a sufficient balance can tip via reddit comments. If somebody tips you before you've linked your account, then an invitation link will be sent so you can collect your tip. Only the intended receiver can collect it, plus the invitation link is sent via PM. After the first tip is collected, the rest are collected automatically.

Once you have the money in your changetip account, you can use it to tip other people on other social networks if you want, or you can withdraw a portion to your own bitcoin wallet. There's lots of options, but for small amounts, phone wallets work great. Breadwallet for iOS, Mycelium for Android. From there, you can spend the bitcoin on VPN services or products from a small but growing number of retailers. OP is heading to Amsterdam, and there's actually quite a few local merchants who are accepting bitcoin as payment. Most transactions are made online though.

Bitcoin's pretty intimidating at first, but after exposing yourself to it for a while it starts to become second nature. Maybe subscribe to /r/bitcoin if you haven't already. We have weekly Q/A threads where beginners can ask any question they want. Lots of extremely knowledgeable and helpful people in the community, and there's a ton of reading and video resources available too. Check out the sticky and the video resources page of the reddit wiki. Experiment with small amounts until you get the hang of it and you'll do fine. (Disclosure: I'm a contractor at changetip.)

It's super simple. You set up a changetip account and link your reddit account, Changetip has a bot which monitors all of your posts and recognises a particular syntax. No one but the owner of the account you are replying to can claim the tip.
