It was Wences that approached Gates at the Allen & Co conference. He told Bill, "You're spending billions to make poor people poorer."

The Gates Foundation was pushing people into the financial system that they could not afford. I'm not sure what that was but I'm sure it was institutional and would have enriched others. According to the book, Gates got a little defensive but Wences gently pushed on and to Gates' credit, he understood and gave Wences an opening.

Someone told Gates Bitcoin was a scam so he dismissed it. He may have taken a second look and understood it is a way to let the poor obtain and store value.
