As someone who'd like to dye her hair purple, but has worked in STEM (I've progressed to managing my own business, I pay taxes, vote, contribute to society, maintain a healthy weight - almost there anyway - and carry no debt), I feel dismay that such a minor decision about hair color is so frowned down upon by a society that embraces reality television and corporate symbol tattoos (Monster drink, anyone?) so long as they exist on men's bodies.

Tell me, since I'm female and I really need to dress carefully... what uniform should I wear (in addition to keeping my hair long and naturally mouse-gray), so that I don't offend anyone's sensibilities or identify myself as someone not to be taken seriously? I know too much black is right out because it's gothy, and khaki is a bit "lesbian" which tends to greatly offend, although it seems to work for Fidel Castro. Problem is, high heels chafe my feet, my legs are too jiggly for anything above the knee since I was obese once (It might offend men who want a more slender, younger set of legs to look at), and I'm a klutz who trips on long skirts.

Let me know. I need to get dressed.

You can get off that cross any time now, no one gives a shit what you wear or what color your hair is. The fact is that the obnoxious tumblr HAES and misandry crowd all wear pretty much the same edgy "nonconformist" getup, part of that is the cat eye glasses and pink hair. It's fun to point out for the same reason the goth kids in south park were funny. "If you don't want to be a conformist, you have to talk, dress, and act like us, and listen to the same music as us"

We aren't disagreeing here, my point is that the people who are obsessed with getting more women in stem fields and are in gender studies are undermining their stated goals by also framing stem programs as temples of misogyny and telling prospective students that the professional world is hostile to women in stem fields.

Meanwhile, the people running stem programs are desperate to get more women in their programs, there are tons of outreach and support programs for women in stem, not to mention the scholarships, and professional organizations like the society of women engineers.

The very same people who claim to want women in stem are the ones discouraging them. It's not a terribly effective strategy to try to convince people to go into a field by telling them it's terrible. On top of that there is the stereotype of stem fields being filled with socially awkward nerds, which is already a deterrent, so the "misogynerd" stuff they like to play up as if the programs and industry are full of neckbeard Mad Men wannabes isn't helping.

It's frustrating to see people not go into a field they would love because they have been told they won't be welcome, and it is infuriating to see the same people telling them that also blaming the programs and industry for not making them feel welcome.

It's an entirely nuanced topic, but honestly, the way a woman's career progresses relies a lot on herself. Beyond a reasonable maternity policy, staying at home to raise one's children is a thing that a lot of women choose to do. Should they be paid by some third-party to stay home because they chose to have a child? Who's responsibility is it? Is it something that should be rectified because there's a wage gap demonstrated when you measure things up the way the wage-gap proponents have, so arbitrarily? Should a woman be paid full time wages to work part time hours?

Just, who is responsible to the woman who chooses to weigh her life between her career and her children?

Women are capable of being career oriented just as men usually are, and many choose that life. But that's a lot of work! There's 24 hours in a day, and career people can spend 80 hours a week or more busting ass, and a lot of these people are men (a lot have wives and children at home they provide for). This is coming from a female nurse without kids who elects to work part time hours, because I just don't value full time hours as much as I value other stuff in my life. Keyword: elects.

My point is women aren't punished for having children. Women are choosing that lifestyle more often.
