Reddit became more accessible. Increased accessibility brought in a lower standard of userbase. I think also the 21st century has grown into a posionous idea that 'everybody has the right to their own opinion.' Yeh that's true but that doesn't mean that socialism isn't objectively the correct choice - it is. People feel more and more comfortable expressing nasty opinions because its their 'right' to do so.

The admins started tolerating hate speech and letting shit like r/coontown go totally unchallenged, that's what happened. Predictably it ruined everything.

Manufacturing consent. Reddit is just another media outlet used to propagate ideas of the status quo. It isn't as free as it once was, due to its popularity and large size. You can bet your ass there are corporations/governments trying to shift the debate on here now.

Because reddit is an open platform with no administration, it allows fascists to congregate and spread their message of hate. You do it long enough and with enough consistency, it'll sink in. Opposition to racism is as much a social thing as being racist itself - that is, if being a racist is extremely unacceptable, you'll see a lot of anti-racist attitudes.

However if people consistently challenge that, and make bigotry something that can be overlooked "Because it's just the internet and they're allowed opinions" and "They're not bothering anybody" etc. then that social compulsion to really take a stand against all bigotry just gets eroded.

With the demographic of reddit being predominantly middle class students, they're going to have a lot more prejudice. Against the poor, against women, against ethnic and religious minorities, and so on.

What's up with Reddit lately?

Insistence on "free speech" for fascists/racists/misogynists/homophobes/etc. Self-reinforcing communities of said bigots -- reactionary scum attracting more of their own kind.

In a word: liberalism

The defaults have shifted so far to the right I got downvoted for saying that social security is literally a safety net, not a handout. That's not controversial at all.

Libertarianism is on the rise on reddit again and always will be because it appeals most to the average redditor, a self-centred bastard who only cares about something if it makes the front page.
