Why I am leaving Reddit (self.GamerGhazi)

This is not a call to arms (or exile). I am nobody important in this sub or site wide for that matter. I am just speaking out about my reasons for leaving this space.

Having finally seen Reddit's executive "plan" to "purge" hate subs. It is a joke. It is worse than a band-aid on an arterial wound.

I have come to the realization that the owners of this site cannot do what is necessary to make Reddit a safer space for a majority of the people here because it would cut against their libertarian Utopian ideal of what the internet should be.

I do not have time for Utopianism trumping reality. Reddit reminds of the scene in Erik the Viking when blood has been shed on the Island of Hy-Brasil and it begins to sink. The the people refuse to leave, drowning in the ocean...

Hy-Brasilians Sinking

Between the systemic technical issues that make it difficult to contain the crazy and the willful blindness of the founders to the problems plaguing Reddit and real solutions to them, I have lost hope that this site will ever live up to it's potential. I am skeptical that it can ever be made safer for the vast majority of its users.

You folks have been a serene oasis in a desert of shit. I salute the mod staff for keeping this small part of Reddit relatively calm and hate free. I recognized the cost it has inflicted upon you all. I cannot in good conscience ask you folks to keep taking hits for me so I can have a safe place to be here.

So, I am stepping away. I wish you all the best. Stay safe, be good to one another, and if we meet somewhere else I will happily call you friend.

There's a world waiting for you out there. Don't let anyone convince you that Reddit is representative of humanity as a whole, or that abusive Internet culture is in any way normal. Enjoy life with people who actually care for each other.

I have been around since the stone age of the internet so, Reddit's boast that is the Front Page Of The Internet is just so much hot air to me. I cut my teeth on dial-up BBS and my first full blown commercial platform was the GEnie network.

To tell the truth, little has changed in terms of e-culture (the flame wars, trolls, tight communities of like minded people, etc.), the real change is technology. Well, that and the scope and scale of those participate.

Your words are to live by. I always have prioritized my meat-space relationships and I encourage everyone to do the same. For me the internet is a just a tool, not a way of life.

I can definitely understand the sentiment. more and more, I've felt like shutting down my account and leaving reddit because it's just the same shitty racism, sexism, phobias, and other shit day in and day out with nothing being done by the admins to really show that it's not welcome on reddit.

but, the mod team and you folks here are pretty much all I've got. and I, a lowly mod on a small sub, would make no impact and send no message to the admins by leaving. if ghazi as a whole shut down even, it would only be seen as a victory for the shittiest of reddit.

however, I sympathize and support any user here who wants to leave reddit. it's a sinking ship and the admins don't care about you.

so, /u/Saracenus, I wish you well and hope you have a place that is safe from the toxicity so rampant on reddit. and if you ever need anything, reach out to us.

/u/lifestyled thank you, it means a lot to me coming from you.

I was one of the donors when you had to step away for your own mental health. Up until that point I had no idea how brutal modding this sub was.

I understand the symbolic nature of Ghazi and the importance it holds as a safe haven for folks trying to a safe place on Reddit.

If there was a service that provided the reach that Reddit has and the tools to actually make it work properly, I am sure you guys would bail post haste.

I really hope you guys and gals find a better place, I would probably rejoin you there. I just cannot support a site with my time and energy that really isn't in my best interests.

I can't blame you one bit. I'm still hemming and hawing over leaving. I've still got a few oases left on here, but if they wind up polluted, I'm gone.

I agree this place is probably headed for bad places, but I am sad to see another ghazelle retire.

As for me, I will be witnessing how bad it can get here and in subredditdrama until I cant take it anymore.

I have often felt the same in the last few weeks. Maybe you are stronger than I am, maybe my inertia is just to powerful for me to overcome it. But overall, you are far from being the only one on Ghazi who feels that way.

Yet I can't say that I don't regret any time another Ghazelle leaves. But in the end, we all have to find the places were we are most comfortable.

Fortunately the internet is vast and there are other places that are friendly than these shores. Godspeed!

Not leaving (specially this sub), but reverted to 99% lurking / 1% posting. And like a lot of people, I'm trying to curb how much time I waste procrastinating on the Internet overall, want to reduce lurking too.

I, for one, am not ready to abandon ship yet. This subreddit is the way by which I communicate and exchange ideas with other sjws. Twitter and Facebook are just too bogus for that.

When the air becomes too toxic to remain here it will be the time to leave.

I've fluctuated back and forth with Reddit. For a site with as much potential as this, it really seems to cater to the lowest common denominator. I've seen youtube comments smarter than some posts here. I can't blame anyone for leaving. Moreso it's actually a testament that you've stayed for so long. Good luck to you on your future endeavors.

Somewhat curious to see what would become of this place if all 'the good ones' up and left for fairer digital pastures.

I know I have no ties to reddit besides ghazi (which got me to sign up in the first place) so it'd be easy for some, but for those tied to multiple communities for a long time it'd be harder.

All that said, you'll be fine :)

People complain about how bad reddit is but between /r/birdswitharms, /r/transformers, /r/onetruegod, /r/digimon and a handful of pony subs, I don't see what's so repellent.
