but why tho? why change characters at all?
Films made from books (or in this case comics) are meant to bring those books/comics alive, and they are meant to bring the CHARACTERS to life. Whats the point if youre just going to chop and change said characters anyway? You may as well just write all new characters and all new stories and abandon the idea of book adaptions entirely.
Whats important about this in particular is what character trait they have decided to cut.
They cut Deadpools Schizophrenia. Why did they do that? There was no need to do that.
They decided Deadpool wouldnt have Schizophrenia because it is a mental illness that is still deemed “too crazy” for public consumption not that it should be public consumption at all
What they have done is taken away an opportunity for people who are living with Schizophrenia to see themselves represented. They have taken away an already established icon for fans of Deadpool who are living with Schizophrenia. They have told everyone who may see this, and everyone who are already fans of Deadpool, that their illness is “too crazy” and “too insane” to be normal. They have told people living with Schizophrenia that even DEADPOOL, who is notorious for being batshit insane, cant be THAT crazy.
Its fucking disgusting, and, if you ask me, insulting.
It is not JUST about representation in this instance. Its also about the stigma against mental illness being perpetuated by the media. Its about people having to hear that their illness, which they may be trying very hard to live with day-to-day, is “too crazy.” Its about neurotypical people being encouraged to view illnesses such as Schizophrenia as “insane” and “crazy.”
“Deadpools so crazy, he must be a Schizo or something!”
“Nah not even Deadpool is THAT crazy”
its fucking disgusting.
And for the record, I could write my own stories with as much representation as I want, it’d all be fucking cut anyway.
