Ok....As an older black man... WTF is funny about this? Guy in reb gear buys tobacco products... Wow... I could have shown you a dozen black men buying cigarillos or "blunts". Does that mean they're automatically going off to roll blunts? Just because random white guy A wears anything with a confederate battle flag doesn't mean he's a racist or ignorant bigot. Nor does a black women checking out said person mean she was offended by his dress.

I'm so sick and tired of these OMG look at this person with a flag item posts. Just because we've got darker skin doesn't mean we're all going nuts over this rebel flag crap. It's stupid and we're doing nothing more than playing to the medias drum beat by being offended by stupid crap.

Pre edit bs.... Yes I'm black. I'm of French and Haitian Creole heritage. I can trace my ancestry back to Africa with several points of delineation due to genetic mapping. My other familial side is directly Native American (Choctaw to be exact) with some Scottish and Irish added into the mix (I'm a hairy ass black man). This whole flag crap is a joke, and I'm old.. So I've dealt with the actual "racial" issue all of my life.

Edit: I'm trying to get through all the comments and reply. Just got home after a long shift and didn't think to check pm this morning.

It's Reddit, man. There is no logic here.

But...

I get it. I'm a white boy Police Officer. During the Baltimore riots; I had an older white guy come up to me on duty and ask me about the rioting. I told him I'm not educated enough on it to make a comment (I was, but I don't talk about social issues with strangers, especially on duty). He goes, "the problem is, the blacks are taking over."

He assumed I was a white, racist Cop and thought I would agree with him. I promptly told him our conversation was over, and left. I don't need to explain to you The thought process of a stereotype. He didn't consider the fact I grew up on the South Side of Chicago surrounded by black communities and had nothing but a positive experience.

I empathize with your frustration, though no experience I've had can probably compare to what you've been victim to. Here's to hoping the next few hundred years are different, right?

I'm also black and I have a completely different opinion. Just because you are black, that doesn't mean that you are the spokesman. I don't believe that people who have rebel flags are always racist, but in my experience, they are usually the people who will say the most off the wall racist shit in any conversation.

Edit: Going to sleep, thanks for all the discussion!

Wait hold on. You mean one black person is not allowed to speak for his entire race just like I can't speak for all white people.

Well shit.

He may not be the spokesman, but neither should whoever is doing it now. The man gave an opinion, you didnt agree with. Does this make hin wrong and you right? Nope, it just means you're going to disagree on some things.

He's not wearing "an item" with the flag. He is decked out in it, and it's obvious that it is on purpose. I don't think it means this guy is doing it to show he hates black people, I'd imagine he's doing it because he wants to show his support for the flag and his idea of it.

From everything I've read, Blacks in the South don't have the same visceral reaction that many of us in the North East do at seeing the flag. And I guess maybe that applies to older folks like yourself.

You can have your reaction, but that doesn't make other's reactions less genuine or worthy of acceptance.

Edit: Jebus, I didn't think I said anything remotely controversial. My last sentence was not a blanket statement. It was specifically about this topic, where I personally think both sides have good points. I myself am against the flag, full disclosure.

Pretty much everything offensive about the south is coming from people in the Northeast and Pacific coast. Most in the south don't give a shit.

And the population % of black people is much higher in the southern states than anywhere else in the country. The south is covered with black people and most of the people complaining are from outside the south.

What? Is this a white or a black view. Some southern people seem to think the south is perfect, Fewer southern blacks think that.

You should read white liberals, black rednecks by thomas sowell.

As a black Southerner, people decked out in rebel flag gear remind me of a Dave Chappelle quote: “The girl says "Oh uh-uh, wait a minute! Wait a minute! Just because I'm dressed this way does not make me a whore!" Which is true, Gentlemen, that is true. Just because they dress a certain way doesn't mean they are a certain way. Don't even forget it. But ladies, you must understand that is fucking confusing. It just is. Now that would be like me, Dave Chappelle, the comedian, walking down the street in a cop uniform. Somebody might run up on me saying, "Oh, thank God. Officer, help us! Come on. They're over here. Help us!" "Oh-hoh! Just because I'm dressed this way does not make me a police officer!" See what I mean? All right, ladies, fine. You are not a whore. But you are wearing a whore's uniform."

That's how I feel about wearing rebel flag apparel. You might not be a bigot/racist. But you are wearing a bigot's uniform.

I think we can safely say that with all of the hubbub around the flag lately (which I agree was ignoring larger issues and fairly sensationalist) anybody who is dressed like that is making a statement or at least displaying an incredible amount of willful ignorance. I would agree with you any other time except right now simply because it is such a hot topic right now. They are both part of society and therefore aware of the recent hype around the flag from both sides, so I think its safe to assume that at least one of them is thinking what OP implies they were thinking.

It doesn't have to be offensive to be funny. It's funny because it looks so ridiculous, a man completely dressed in the confederate flag and cowboy boots buying dip and cigarettes, and the cashier happens to be black. It's like something from a sketch.

So many comments here that are offended by OP possibly making fun of the Confederate flag, I feel like they're missing so many details in this game.

I've never seen so many Redneck stereotypical traits on a person. It's... it's beautiful. Like he's some sort of backwoods superhero.

Confederate bandana on head, mullet, sleeveless shirt that ALSO HAPPENS TO BE A CONFEDERATE FLAG, torn jorts, cowboy boots.

I want to see this guy's Batmobile equivalent. Like it's an El Camino with wheels that make it look like it's supported by cinder blocks, a bald eagle on the hood, a confederate flag on the roof, and native american chiefs in headresses painted on the sides. The horn plays the opening notes of Sweet Home Alabama, and the car alarm is the entirety of Green Grass & High Tides Forever.

SouthernMan, I love you and want to read about your adventures.

You ever consider that when they buy those, they spend a good 10-20 minutes fondling them to install them on the back of their truck.

10-20 minutes? Don't they just pop in the hitch receiver? Shouldn't take more than a minute or two.

It shouldn't but nevertheless they spend twenty minutes doing it.

wheels that make it look like it's supported by cinder blocks

I was with ya till this, I can't picture what you mean?

Stereotypically speaking, most rednecks have at least one rusted out car or truck on cinder blocks in their yard.

Exactly this. I grew up in the south, you usually knew you were in one of the crappier parts of a county when you started seeing cars on cinderblocks rusting away on a lawn.

Best I ever saw was when I was living in west NC, there was a place near my middle school that had a rusted up half of a bus supported by cinder blocks. Like, just the front half of a school bus on someone's lawn.

Redneck here: the car on blocks is usually a parts car. It's cheaper to buy a broken down car with a good motor in it than individual parts. The other thing is it could be a project that never got finished due to job/kids/house repair/etc.

It's not so much having the car for parts, it's having it rusting on the lawn instead of in a garage, shed, barn, or at least under a tarp.

No joke, my baby sitter in Kentucky had a back half of a bus in her backyard. Seats and everything.

Can confirm. One uncle has his own junkyard behind his barn.

Edit: For any madbros reading this, reminder the South seceded because of slavery and only because of slavery

But why did the pilgrims commit treason to the British crown?

I thought they were supposed to be loyal and don't remember the British being oppressive or anything.

Taxation without masturbation.

The pilgrims and the colonists who rebelled against England were two different groups of people, in a way. The pilgrims came to America for religious freedom with a goal to create the ideal religious society, "as a city upon a hill", etc. For all intents and purposes they were still loyal to the crown, but they were persecuted in England. This group arrived ~150 years before Independence was declared. The colonists who rebelled came over to America for different purposes, mainly land and business. The pilgrims eventually filtered out of relevance.

Growing up in the south, I saw a lot of El Caminos. Almost never in working condition. Haven't seen a single one since I left, so it's been a lasting image I guess. I know most people go for pickup trucks but I see those -everywhere-. A poorly maintained El Camino, though? That's got southern appalachia all over it for me.

[–]puttputt_in_thebutt 42ポイント43ポイント  (72子コメント)

Well, I can understand why people get angry over it. I never did until I moved to the south and my coworker laid everything out for me. To make a long story short, in a time where it seems as if society is trying to move away from bigotry and stereotyping of groups of people, its still socially acceptable to make fun of southerners and make generalizations about people from the south being inbred hicks, uneducated, racist, Republican, etc. Thats why a lot of them cling to the flag, because although it is rooted in racism and hate, its a unifying symbol for people to look to and feel a sense of belonging. Look in this thread- there is so much bigotry and hate towards rednecks, along with all the jokes at their expense. When you make fun of a group of people and spit in their faces for so long, eventually they get angry and retaliate, and thats why you get situations like the riots in Baltimore. I don't condone violence, but I definitely understand why they were so angry, and if this keeps up, eventually you're going to start another civil war. For the record, I'm not even a fan of the flag or anything.

[–]leetdood_shadowban 31ポイント32ポイント  (2子コメント)

I agreed with you up until the civil war part. A civil war over this shit isn't going to happen. Everything else you said, including the part about the baltimore riots, is spot on.

[–]puttputt_in_thebutt 4ポイント5ポイント  (1子コメント)

Oh I don't mean a civil war over this, its just something I could see if the polarization of everything and everyone kept up for years and years

I live in the Deep South and love many aspects of life here. However, the insults and stereotypes are well earned. They have trailer parks in every state and every region but only the south puts 8 churches and no schools within walking distance. On that note, we do have the best bible educated children in the country.

there is so much bigotry and hate towards rednecks

I think the correct term is appalachian american

What's so civil about war, anyway?

its still socially acceptable to make fun of southerners and make generalizations about people from the south being inbred hicks, uneducated, racist, Republican, etc.

I just want to be perfectly clear that while I make fun of southern redneck inbred racist uneducated right-wing hicks, I also make fun of white yuppie liberals and black people and mexicans too.

People want to be respected, they want to be part of an identity that is treated with respect. It's an irony that dressing outrageously to gain respect frequently goes hand in hand with being disrespectful to someone else.

I guess you could compare it to the threatening way gang folk dress. Of course, gang bandanas do not indicate disrespect to others, so it's at least a bit more moral.

I occasionally wear jorts... not like cutoff jorts, but jorts nevertheless. I am from California.

Seriously though, jeans that are also shorts? Some genius mad scientist invented this and he will be forgotten. Bless his heart.

I mean, I watched this when I was a kid:

Were people complaining back in the day too?

It was always an issue. Georgia was forced to remove the confederate flag off its state flag last decade and the NCAA had a boycott on the state of South Carolina for flying the flag on government property.

It's because last month somebody killed 9 people with a Confederate flag.

Here in America we have this thing ironically called "News Media" and its their job to make mountains out of mole hills or just plain make stuff up, and call it news. The bigger and more drawn out they can make it the more time they can milk it for views. Now a short while ago, some crazy white kid walked into a church where black people warship and opened fire on them. Now the news loves stuff like this, they get a big spike in rateings, problem is, onces people know about it, they quickly lose interest. So the news has to come up with ways to keep people interested. One way of doing this is to theory craft about WHY this person did it, Its not enough to just say hes a nutjob and be done with it. They need a cause. So they can then make storys about how THAT thing might be bad for you and your family, using the old fear monger tactic to get views and have more "storys". In the past they have tried to blame video games, This time they noticed he had some flag stitched on his jacket, or something and so that became the new story.

its all about how to make a story, that will then feed into a new story, and so on and so on. This kid had this flag > Is this flag at fault? > Should we ban this flag? > These places have now banned selling/showing this flag > Are people who oppose banning this flag racists? > and so on and so on.

All for the pursuit of ratings, I mean truth.

black people warship

Oh shit did someone tell the navy?

[–]Red_House_Painters 27ポイント28ポイント  (3子コメント)

For fucks sake, he wasn't a "crazy white kid", he was a 21 year old racist terrorist who wanted to start a race war.

Why is Dylann Roof considered to be a "nutjob" while the Boston Bombers were terrorists?

Well, looks like it's no different from here.
News outlets love to talk hours about things that are hardly news, or having highly biased views.

Well there's your problem! The people in that Church were engaging battle in a warship rather than worshipping!

[–]personnel_investment 14ポイント15ポイント  (3子コメント)

As a non American... why does it look like only now the confederate flag started to be an issue?

left-leaning people have always hated the confederate flag, and associated it directly with slavery.

right-leaning people tend to have a broader interpretation, and associate the flag with political libertarianism, southern nationalism, white southern identity, or federalism.

IMO Neither side is right or wrong -- but with the shootings in Charleston, the left's version of the 'what the flag stands for' has clearly become the dominant one.

(edit: I should also mention that hate groups like the KKK have used the confederate flag for many years, which also has a big impact on how the flag's meaning is interpreted.)

Gotta respect the fact that dude is all in.

He owns that shit like dreadlocks owned Axl Rose.

This is the beauty of free speech, he can wear what the fuck he wants and she can think what the fuck she wants.

Since when did wearing jean shorts become something people make fun of? In Australia, denim shorts are as common as denim pants.

Texan here. I hate when people wear cowboy boots and aren't doing cowboy stuff. Not because I'm a cowboy, but because cowboy boots are in no way comfortable or suited to normal wear. If you're going out to a country-western bar and want to look the part, that's gravy, but for just walking around, I mean... they make normal boots you can wear if you want a hard-bottomed shoe.

I'm an average lame white guy in his early thirties and I would have given the same look.

Someone want to explain to me what's wrong with destroying symbolism of a defeated treasonous state? As far as I'm concerned, eliminating the flag is part of a war objective that took 130 years too long.

I'm from a very old south family in Alabama. Affluent, never changing. My direct ancestors were confederates. I still think that flag stands for nothing more than a treasonous, despicable uprising from a bunch of greedy, heartless assholes.

And that's exactly how it's been used. South Carolina legislature voted to take it out of retirement and fly it in protest of desegregation. If this was really about states rights they'd fly it for something their own state was doing -- something progressive and actually pro-African American would reappropriate that symbol real quick. Sending out reparations checks in confederate flag envelopes would do it, for example. Except pretty much every time it's been flown it's usually closely linked to racism.

Every time I see that flag in what ever form, I think that person must love losing. A losing flag is a losing flag.

I got them same boots! The shorts are a little much... but I bet that dude knows where all the good mud holes are. Where is this?
