Breaks window, steals car

Too stupid to pay attention to the note and breaks window anyway. Calls the cops and yells at you about leaving your dog in a hot car.

And then post "rescued this little guy from a horrible owner" for that sweet karma.

[–]PM_pictures_of_pets 38ポイント39ポイント  (12子コメント)

Yes. Any experienced retail employee will tell you that the sign could be big enough to cover the entire window, and some people still would not pay attention.

Darth Vader could stand there and hold the sign, and some people still would not pay attention.

I worked as an advisor in a college dorm on the art floor. I started hanging all of my signs crooked. I got tons of comments and a few people even fixed them, but they finally got noticed.

Jesus ur so right. I do security @ a grocery store. If more people did this then my life would be great.

This exchange was always one of my favorites:

Customer pulls out checkbook. "What store am I in again?"

I try very, very hard not to roll my eyes as I point to the giant, wall-sized, easy-to-read store logo that's directly in their field of view. Or at one of the other three or so places where it was easily visible.

That happened at least once a week.

I usually listen to the motor to see if I can hear the fan and condenser going. If the ac is on, you can hear it. But you are right, some people ignore the obvious.

Then the cops shoot the dog and bill the owner. Dozens of advice animals ensue

Dog is a trained Doberman and tears thief to shreds

If the AC is running, the key is in the ignition and the door probably isn't locked at all.

I have an aftermarket remote starter that will let you turn the key to off, remove the key and lock the doors with the engine running. It just acts as if it's in normal remote start mode and will cut the engine off as soon as you touch the brake to shift out of park (if the key isn't turned to 'on'.) So even if someone smashes the window, they aren't going anywhere without the key still.

Lots of modern cars have this built in. Priuses in particular have this "problem" - you can leave the car on, AC and other auxiliary functions going, close and lock the car, and walk away.

Mercedes Benz also, we've had numrous occasions at my work where we have to play find the key when a mechanic worked off with it.

Someone busted my window trying to 'save' my dog when I went to Starbucks one day. I was in there for five minutes, the a/c was on full blast, and I don't even drive a nice car. You could hear that it was running.

Apparently, I was the asshole for calling the police and making her pay for the damages.

Edit: to the people telling me I should have left him at home...

I was taking him to work with me. He had a bladder stone removed the day before and kept me up most of the night crying. I grabbed a coffee on my way to work because I was exhausted.

Edit 2: I work at a veterinary clinic.

I love animals too, but I don't know when we decided it was on as a society to go full vigilante here.

I think if a passerby is going to spend the time acting after seeing an animal in a car, they should at least wait about five minutes from discovering the vehicle to see if an owner returns, or make a reasonable attempt to find the owner. If they can't bring it upon themselves to do this, they probably were just looking for an excuse to smash a window and/or the self-gratification of being a "hero".

I had someone call the cops while I was in the car with my dogs and the windows were open.. I was majorly pissed off as I was just slouching in the front passenger seat. They didn't even try to check if I was there.

I imagine the cops were angry as hell that this idiot wasted their time, geeze

I actually caught them in the middle of their call and was like, "Hey, I'm actually right here. I know it's a hot day but we're dealing with it together."

Yeah, there's no need to smash a window until you see the dog is unresponsive and not moving.

I get a feeling this is said rhetorically (correct if wrong) but the point of waiting five minutes, at least if the dog is still responsive and doesn't appear to be in physical distress, is that from the moment someone notices an animal in car, they likely don't know how long the car has been there. It might have pulled up the minute before they did.

No no I'm being serious. If the dog is awake and responsive, you have enough time to try and find the owner or wait a few minutes instead of immediately resorting to smashy smashy.

Oh okay, then yes clearly I agree. It's a bit of a judgment call really but some people have terrible judgment so it's best to say give it time and find the owner unless the animal really seems to be suffering. Even that's hard to say because there are morons in this world who don't care to distinguish suffering from barking to ward off the stranger peering in the window.

But I really wanna smash a window!

When people started treating dumb animals like they're human.

My first gold! :3

Well in their defense, it's not the dumb animal's fault they can't tell the AC is on and decide to break the window.

She could have opened the door. All four of them were unlocked.

But nobody has been a hero for opening a door.

She opens the door, locks it, shuts it, and then smashes the window, and then jumps in front of a bus because thats ridiculous.

no doggaroo this time please....

Oh boy. On reddit, animals aren't "like" humans. They are superior to humans.

Well no, the reason most people feel more concern for animals and children is we perceive them as helpless. The average redditor doesn't believe animals are superior to humans, rather that an animal needs their protection/aid more than a human adult would.

You underestimate the ass burgers epidemic around here.

That reminds me, when are those burgers coming back to McDonalds?

When did they leave?

Exactly this. You wouldn't leave your helpless kid in the car for hours in the hot sun (well I hope you wouldn't). So why would anyone think it's okay to leave a helpless animal in the car for hours in the hot sun?

I understand leaving it in there for 5-10 minutes well you go into a starbucks, but some people are just so irresponsible and stupid to leave a animal in a car for hours.

Lots of people leave their kids in the car in the hot sun. I used to live in Arizona, and a few times each summer there would be a news story about a kid that died from being left in a car all day.

Can confirm.

Source: Lived in the hell that is Arizona the last 5 years

The point is that an adult can just open the car door themselves when they're too hot, and get out.

Animals can't exactly manage that on their own, therefore we help them, especially considering they're only in the overheating car because we put them there.

Besides, with reddit brimming with societal rubbish, animals probably would be superior compared to a vast amount of users.

Even if animals are "dumb" that doesn't justify subjecting them to tortuous conditions.

This year when some fucking state passed a law that made it legal to break into people's cars like this. Now everyone feels entitled to fucking not mind their own business.

Happened to me too. Was on a road trip, realized I forgot dog food, so I pulled into a strip mall. Left the truck running and the a/c on and ran into the pet store. Came out to find some dipshit had opened my door (it was unlocked), took my dog out of the truck, and tied her up to my trailer hitch. That pavement was a bazillion fucking degrees. Good thing I was only gone 3 minutes.

Thats absolutely fucking ridiculous. I do the same thing but my truck lets me take my keys with me and lock it. I leave TWO a/cs on for my dog (front ac, and the rear ac roof vents) and I have a feeling someones still gonna smash out my window. How do people not realize if a dog isn't panting and is sitting in the AC they are more than fine

It's funny, I told this story in the comment section of our local paper, and got flamed for being "insensitive" to the environment for leaving my truck running. I guess I should have driven the 100km back home and dropped the dog off, and then gone to the store. Makes sense eh? Now I just set the a/c to high and hit the remote start so I can leave my doors locked when I get stuck in a similar situation.

What are these magical vehicles all you people seem to have? You can leave the engine on with the keys out, leave them locked and running, remote starting... I have never seen a car that can do this!

Is it a special American thing?

I don't get it how someone can walk around, see a dog in a car and break a window in the name of "justice" and not at least wait 5 minutes to see if someone will show up.

Also, if the car is running, try touching a window that's not facing the sun. If it's cool to the touch, or even just "slightly warm", then odds are the A/C is running.

I mean you could do this, but it seems much less fool proof than just listening. It's very clear when a car is running with ac on full blast. The ac motor is pretty loud when an engine is idling and is distinctly different then just s running motor.

One think I like about the new prius's and Agee other cars that have copied it, is the roof solar panel that is dedicated to powering the ac motor.

I think it is because a fair amount of the time, it's some asshat doing it for the attention.

People are probably doing it these days so they can post about it on social networking sites of make a fucking meme of it

Exactly. I've seen several posts in the last few months where somebody has found a phone in the street and had made a post on Facebook begging people to share it far and wide so they can get it back to the owner. Despite the fact that they could just call, I don't know, Mom or Dad or try a large number of other things that would almost immediately allow them to return the phone. Nope, need a few likes and shares first.

70 degrees, car parked in shade, all windows cracked, dog just came from the house where he had access to a full water bowl. Walked into the library for 10 minutes. Came back to find some woman yelling at me and calling the cops. I called the cops after I left. They said they got the complaint and weren't going to follow up on it as 10 minutes doesn't count as cruelty no matter the temperature (not sure I agree on that score but whatever).

Some people just go crazy. I remember I was about 12, my little sister would have been 6 and our childhood dog in the back of the car, granted it was a warm day but my mum and dad stop at a country pub on the way back from a trip out. They park in the shade, all the windows are cranked down and ask us to wait in the car for a minute whilst they go order drinks, and then we'll all go and sit in the pub garden where dogs are allowed.

So this woman starts screaming at them about leaving their kids and dog locked in a car on a hot day as soon as they reach the pub door. Bare in mind the windows were down and I was practically a teenager and very capable of opening the car door and letting us out. She apparently followed them into the pub and told the bartender not to serve them because they had locked their dog and kids in a car (but the bartender took one look at the hysterical woman and just served them anyway) Approximately 2 minutes later we were enjoying soft drinks in the sunshine with our dog and this lady just stormed off in a huff.

OH MY GOD THEY LET YOU DRINK SOFT DRINKS DON'T THEY CARE ABOUT ROTTING YOUR TEETH AND WHAT ABOUT THE POTENTIAL FOR ABERATIONS IN INSULIN SIGNALLING

Glad you did that. People need to learn how to mind their own business.

Yeah, over all fuck these people.

The dog isn't going to die in the time it takes me to get a fucking frappuccino.

Lets use some common sense on both sides. The problem is that those people don't know how long you've been gone. They don't know where you are or what you're doing. A lot of people go into Starbucks, get out their typewriters and Macbooks and sit around. You could just as easily leave Starbucks and go wondering aimlessly. Who honestly knows what you people are doing?

BUT.....smashing windows the first time you see a sign of an animal in a car is equally stupid, especially if there's a note or the car is running. Call animal control or the police and let them smash a window if necessary. I'm not cutting my arms up because you're too stupid to leave your pet in the car because you just HAD to take it with you to get a frappuccino.

That's exactly the point, though. They don't know and it's none of their damn business. If the dog is in VISIBLE DISTRESS, call someone. If the dog is jumping around/acting normal, you don't need to consider going all PETA and breaking shit.

By the time the dog is in visible distress, it's too late. Heat stroke is hard to reverse in dogs. People shouldn't be so dumb. Leave a sign if the a/c is on or leave the windows open.

Heat stroke is never hard to reverse until cardiac or dehydration problems are occurring. In the case of straightforward heat stroke apply cool water to as much of the body surface as possible. If dehydration is a concern do the same and bring to a vet if they won't take water and don't recover fully.

Once ran into home depot and left my girlfriends chihuahua in the car for about 15 minutes. Left windows cracked, water out, went in and bought my stuff and came back. When I got back there were two ladies parked on either side of me looking in my windows as my dog was whining barking and jumping around frantically and lunging at the doors. They started trying to explain to me that this dog needed saving and he was clearly stressed by the intense heat.

I stopped short of calling them idiots when I explained that it was my dog, my car, and that was my jacket on the seat encase he wanted to sleep under it to keep warm seeing as how its fucking November and this dog has almost no fur. Also stop aggravating my dog by tapping on the glass and staring in the windows.

Omg that hurts my brain. Intense November heat... People are dumb.

There have been a few cases where the dog has just flipped the dial to full heat by jumping/moving around so it's risky no matter what.

I would quite like to build a temperature sensor that both displays the internal temperature to outside observers and will SMS you the temp every 3 minutes so you are reassured that all is OK. It would stick on the drivers window or somewhere similar.

[–]One_Nine_Three_Eight 57ポイント58ポイント  (4子コメント)

I kept trying to think of a song called alc by Queen, I even Googled alc before I realized that it was a/c.

My hybrid can run the A/C for a while on battery power. The engine will kick on and recharge as needed.

not even that - my ~2000 Toyota Corolla can run the A/C without the engine on.

Isn't that just the fan and not the actual air conditioner? It'll blow air but once it runs out of the leftover cool air the fan is just going to be blowing car temperature air.

Correct for non-electric cars.

My Subaru forester has remote start. Which means you can start or leave your car on before you get in to cool down the car and it allows the ac to be running

I remote start my car when I leave my dog in it and it will stay running without a key for 10 minutes. If you do anything like touch the brake while it's on remote start it will automatically shut off.

The best idea is to actually write a note that says exactly what time you left the car, and which store you're in. People who see dogs in cars on a hot day have no idea if the dog has been in the car for 2 minutes or 20 minutes, but if you leave a note that says "I left the car at 4:57pm", they'll rest easy.

Bullshit. It's clear that the heat's on and the stereo is blaring Nickleback.

If it's a newer car with an engine start button you can let your car run without the keys in it.

Totally confused for a second there wondering how the dog was listening to both Queen and Alice in Chains...

Why is your flash on in the middle of the day?

What if the dog is into brutal death metal? Queen would be torture then...
